Review

"A brilliant volume of analysis, careful research, elegant writing, and the sensitive inclusion of multiple source materials ranging from demographic statistics to propaganda films."-- International Journal of African Historical Studies"A Diplomatic Revolution offers a fascinating argument based on a variety of multilingual and multi-archival sources that reflect the national discourse of the nations involved."--African Studies Review"An ambitious book that succeeds admirably in its argument...In scope, and persuasiveness, A Diplomatic Revolution is unlikely to be surpassed as the best book about the Algerian revolution for many years to come."--Journal of Cold War Studies"A. J.P. Taylor observed that historians 'talk so much about profound forces in order to avoid doing the detailed work' (p 141) Connelly is not one of them. His multiarchival research is impressive, especially his pioneering work in the recently available Algerian records. Above all, he has taken an innovative analytical approach, an engaging alternative to traditional diplomatic historiography."-- The International History Review "In concentrating on the international dimension, Connelly weaves into his story the changing roles of the United States, Gamal Abdel Nasser's Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia; the ebb and flow of FLN relations with the soviet bloc; and much more."--Foreign Affairs"Connelly's book is not a comprehensive history of the Algerian war, but a meticulous reconstruction of the global environment in which it occurred. By recasting the Algerian revolution as a contest between competeing 'transnational systems' he has shined a welcome new light on a struggle that has long been treated, for practical purposes, as an episode in the history of Fance and its empire, without suficient reference to the rest of the world, whose interests were most decidedly in play."-- Strategic Insights"This extensively researched study will provide extremely valuable information to scholars of decolonization, and represents a major contribution to the history of what one of the belligerent parties, France, only officially recognized as a war in October 1999."--Journal of Military History

Columbia University historian Matthew Connelly frames the Algerian War as a watershed event for France that had repercussions for future conflicts and for Cold War international relations. The book is aptly title The Diplomatic Revolution because the war was not primarily won or lost on the ground between insurgents and counterinsurgents but through political maneuvering. Militarily, the French effectively reduced the FLN's guerrilla force. Politically, however, the French lost the war because they failed to recognize that controlling physical terrain or defeating enemy forces would not seal victory. The FLN, cognizant of its weaknesses in the face of overwhelming French military power, restructured the geometry of the conflict around international opinion. The FLN's ability to leverage world opinion to both prevent the United States from unilaterally backing the French and to prevent the French government from effectively seeking outside assistance was revolutionary. Connelly is the first historian to effectively demonstrate this by synthesizing military, political, and economic history.Connelly's second major intervention is to explain that in losing Algeria, France was freed to follow its own foreign policy independent of the superpowers. This changed the order of the post-colonial world, since France could maintain hegemony even in countries it freed, while neither too strongly supporting either the US or the Soviet Union.Connelly's work is recognized within the historical community as a masterpiece of geo-politics and diplomatic relations. To respond to other reviewers, this is not a "popular history" for casual reading but an academic work that, will deliver in spades if given a sufficiently careful and studied reading.

This diplomatic history of the Algerian independence movement offers insight into the events of the past year, i.e., Iraq II. As the book points out, fifty years ago American stood on the right side of history, and France faced the opposition of the world. Interesting sidenotes include France's dirty tricks by its special forces. Read this history and learn how Dulles and Eisenhower would be doves in the current US administration.

I was assigned to read this book for a Graduate course in History. I agree with the first review that it does shed light on diplomatic history of world issues and parallels can be seen from the Algerian conflict to the situation today with Iraq. I understand this is a book about the international arena of diplomacy and that forces an author to discuss the many nations and their representatives involved. However, as a Graduate student familiar with picking topics for research it would have been better to pick a more isolated topic and examination of the conflict than to take on the entire conflict from all sides. The reason I say this is because as far as from a reader's standpoint keeping all the players straight in this drama became very complicated to follow. I think the author should have included an Appendix at the back of the book listing all the people's names involved so a reader could easily look up their job title and organization they were involved with. Also, the writing went on and on in details ad infinitum that probably could have been skipped and still made the point and prove the argument the author was trying to make. The combination of trying to keep all the players straight within this drama/ conflict with the rambling on of endless details made the book a very tedious reading experience. By the time I got to the last two chapters, honestly, A. I just didn't care anymore about the conflict because the author drove my natural curiosity about history right out of me with the tedious reading experience and B. the prospect of having to read two more tedious chapters with endless details was a torturous thought. I just wanted a fast forward button to get to the point and conclusion of what happened in the end. Granted I came out of reading this book with a truly extensive knowledge of the conflict, but sometimes too much information with endless details makes enjoyment of learning and retaining the information next to impossible. If you're looking for a book that is enjoyable to read and gives you a decent background and history without all the rambling on and on pick another book. If you actually enjoy people rambling on and on, wading through endless details, and seemingly never getting to the point than this is the book for you.

How misleading... even my two year old realized she'd been taken on this one. Every page that turned, she'd ask, "Elmo?" Sure enough, we got to the end of the book, and NO Elmo. I should have read the reviews. If you are looking to train your toddler in the area of "dealing with disappointment," this is the book for you. Elmo on the cover! Come on!

This is a cute book. It is pretty much the 'Wheels on the Bus' song in a book. It has a Seasame Street tilt, with one of the lines being 'Coo-ooo-kie, coo-ooo-kie'. There are wipers going 'swish swish swish', babies going 'wah wah wah', parents going 'shh shh shh'. There are some other ones like the band playing 'Umm paa paa' and the grouches going 'bam bam bam' with trash can lids. My kids seem to enjoy it and have asked for it a lot. As long as you know what you are getting and want a book version of Wheels on the Bus, you are going to be pleased. A hopefully, for your kids sake, you sing better than me. :-)

Great BUT be aware if you are an Elmo fan - despite being pictured on the cover, Elmo is NOT in this book! Still one of our favorites. Our daughter loves the clever variations of one of her favorite songs, which have now become part of the verses we sing even when not reading the book.

This has become one of my daughter’s favorite books. It is beautifully illustrated and it written as a sweet poem. The board book is perfect for little hands. My daughter gives Elmo a kiss at the end of the story each time! 😊

Cute book!!! Remember the muppet who always gets frustrated because waiter Grover akways messes up his order? Well this book is about his experience on the bus with a spitting up baby monster, a cookie munching cookie monster, a loud boom box, can banging grouches, an oompapa band, aliens and more! Finally he exclaims 'whay kind of bus is this? I'm getting off at the next stop!' He then hails a taxi, can you guess who the taxi driver is? My kids and I really enjoyed this book!

Not all pages are here. I downloaded this only because we have the actual board book, which I read to my boys every night before bed, but we recently moved and all of our books are in storage. I tried to remember just to tell them the story since we've moved, but kept forgetting a page or two. So I decided to download this. There seem to be at least 6 pages missing. It's still cute, but very disappointing when we are familiar with the story. This would get 5 stars if all pages were there.

I ordered this book for a Valentines gift for my grandson. I was very happy when it arrived and I can not wait to give it to him. He is 19months and Elmo is his favorite!

My son loves this book. He loves the "Wheels on the bus" and this book is a great take with a creative twist. The bright illustrations are creative and create a great story. We love it!

A National Park junkie, I have become a junkie of books with titles like "Death in Wherever National Park" (Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Big Bend). Partly out of morbid fascination, but also because many of these types of books give interesting accounts of back-country adventure and rescue stories. They also provide excellent advice and warnings of what not to do in rugged terrain.I ordered this book and sent a copy to my seventeen year old son when we started planning a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park this summer. Longs Peak, the only 14-er in RMNP, drew his attention. Also mine after I read up on the hike and saw it required not only great distance (fifteen miles), but also climbing abilities in addition to hiking skills. Possessing neither climbing experience, nor unsure of my fifty-plus year old ability to do a fifteen mile strenuous hike in rough terrain, Chapter 2 of this book persuaded us both that Longs Peak was beyond our current skill level (ok, it persuaded me....he wasn't entirely persuaded until after the strenuous but enjoyable hike to Chasm Lake at the foot of Longs Peak and 3000 feet below the summit). This book is a compendium of deaths, near-deaths and rescues in RMNP since before its inception. Each chapter is neatly divided (hiking, climbing, road accidents, murders - thankfully only a few of those). The synopses of each case run from detailed to brief as the facts and knowledge dictate. What emerges from the whole is not only a catalogue of incidents, but wise lessons and observations that will make the reader a more knowledgeable outdoorsman about what not to do in terms of risk.Although this book's entire focus is on mishap and rescue in RMNP, when one considers the actual extremely small number of incidents given the three million visitors the park hosts annually, the Park and the Ranger Staff offer everyone a thrilling and safe experience in the outdoors.

Very dry writing, clearly the author's style is based on his decades service writing government reports. And that is the main problem; most of the stories are drawn from the NPS incident report with very little additional information (a few include some information from related newspaper articles). The books structure is also at fault, there is no flow. He breaks the chapters down by the type of incident; ie, a chapter on climbing falls, one on hiking incidents, one on auto accidents, etc... The book would have benefited from less information, he appears to have reported every death that has occured in RMNP since its creation, and a few prior to, as well as a few survival stories thrown in. I guess its a good thing such a documenting has occured, it just makes for poor reading. There is so little detail on each of the hundreds of people in here the reader can't really understand or connect, and so little setting of the scene the reader can't begin to picture it. Frequently in one brief paragraph the reader is introduced to the participants (often re victims) within a sentence to two disaster strikes, then we get a few more lines on the search/rescue attempt/recovery (in more detail than the intro to the victims) and on to the next. A few times the author did try to set the scene, I think describing spring in the park, but that was pretty far in and seemedmout of place by that point. I think this book would be best for RMNP historians, Rangers, or others who are looking for a reference book. Check out Colorado 14er Disasters for a better read.

This thoroughly researched book is not for the faint of heart. It tells the stories of tragedies in the wilderness of RMNP, but the thread connecting the book together is that with a little precaution, 99.99% of park visits can be absolutely safe and rewarding. My only regret is that I read this book after I visited RMNP, I would have loved to visit some of the sites mentioned, not in a morbid sense, but to see what challenging terrains claimed their victims. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

I have camped in RMNP several times over the years with my growing family. I realize now, after reading this book, how fortunate we were not to be injured or lost. If you are taking a trip to a wilderness area, read this book and learn! This is not a controlled theme park, folks. Thanks Ranger Joe.

This is a great book for anyone planning a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. I sat down planning on reading a few chapters but ended up spending most of the night reading. Very informative and well researched. It will make you appeciate that when you visit one of our national parks that you are in an environment that does not always forgive poor decisions. A real page turner.

loved it

Read it while working in Rocky Mountain National Park as a park entrance Ranger during the slow times. It was awesome....Excellent read.

I enjoyed this well written book. It is amazing what people do out in the parks without proper knowledge of their surroundings.

This is not a book from an AA or Al-anon program that will give you steps on how to fight your addiction, and I feel the ones who reviewed it so low were looking for something more of that nature. But for anyone who enjoys drinking and sometimes doesn’t want to stop when everyone else has had enough, then it’s definitely relatable to you. We can take all pleasures too far to the point of destruction, and discovering the reason behind our actions is key. Not everyone has an allergic reaction as they refer to it for alcoholics where one drink triggers the lever to keep going til there’s no booze left or you pass out. For those that can socially drink in moderation but find themselves in increasing situations where they use alcohol as their crutch, lose control and ultimately keep drinking to fill a void that never gets filled, then you will love and be inspired by this book. I felt the beginning was slow and once I got mid way I didn’t want to put it Down! It gave me inspiration and a new outlook on how life can be more genuinely rich in experiences without depending on something to help make that happen other than what we really need-our health, family and friends. Thank you Bex for sharing your experience and for giving me what I needed to remind me that I am a strong woman, successful and capable of living more fully with new exciting experiences that don’t have to require me to be in a mind-altered state! And that it’s not about needing something that will make our experiences great, but rather about us creating those experiences in a way that feels authentically great! 😊

I read this book in 2 days. It's eye opening, motivating, and REAL!If you've ever wondered if a break from alcohol would be a good thing for you, this book is a great starting place to explore the issue. No judgement, no preaching, simply one woman's story about willingness to get super honest about her behavior and brave enough to face her emotions champagne free.(Her program and insight is also what helped me break the 100 alcohol free mark!)

I had high hopes for this book. I almost exclusively read memoirs, as I find real life much more dramatic and gritty than fiction. Unfortunately, this book read like a novel that eventually turned into a salespitch for her products and services. I'm happy she's healthy, but this book is booooring. All of the people and places are interchangeable and lack any depth at all. At times it was cheesy and made me cringe. She's writes about reading blogs, her gratitude journals, her lists of what's better than wine, her vision boards...yawn.

I couldn’t put this book down. I originally took a look at the title and expected a cheesy story plot of some sort, but in a good way. However I found much more within these pages. The author is so relatable. It was relieving to know there’s at least ONE other woman out there that had the same experiences, fears, insecurities, obstacles (and regrets) I’ve had. This book made me feel like I wasn’t alone and that I could in fact, be sober and look forward to each day. I’m very motivated after reading this. And somehow this book made me feel like there’s a much better life to look forward to. Thank you Bex for choosing to be sober, staying strong and motivated throughout your journey and lastly, for writing this book.

I loved this book! Quit drinking for a week or so before I received it. I am really not a reader, and I read this before bed only and finished in two nights. I related to it so much, it was as if she was telling my story. Also, it’s nice to see there is life after booze, even for a big party person. Spent my first holiday sober, 4 of July! Eye opener! I thought everyone got drunk on that day. Most people actually do drink ONE beer! Knock me over with a feather!Thank you!

I just finished reading the book and loved it. I’m new to sobriety...just over a month. I have no desire to drink again, and it was great to read about Rebecca’s emotions and experiences and to know I’m not alone. Sometimes I think I’m crazy to be this happy to have a clear head. I’m gaining my confidence back. I’m learning to love myself and see myself as my family and friends do. This book affirms my decision and motivates me even more to stay sober! My favorite quote from her book is this, about being asked if she considered herself an alcoholic. “It doesn’t matter whether I drank every day or binge-drank once a week. What mattered was the effect drinking was having on my soul. Alcohol wasn’t good for me, and I was much better off without it.” Truth for me! Validating and comforting. I am free!

Unfortunately, I found this book to be very boring and very redundant. As much as I tried to finish it I just couldn’t. Every chapter was the same sentiments.

Excellent. Well thought out, well written, well communicated. I bought this for self for Christmas gift, and read it throughout day. A great resource, so personal, so raw. I commend Ms. Weller for her ability to bring such a "hush hush" topic to the forefront for women and men alike and to motivate them to not life a half-lived life. Brilliant.
