About the Author

Mike Royko was born in Chicago in 1932 and for much of his youth lived in the flat above his family's tavern on Milwaukee Avenue. Not only did he become the most widely read columnist in Chicago history, but his column was syndicated in more than 600 newspapers across the country. He was also the author of the classic account of city machine politics, Boss. Mike Royko's last column in the Chicago Tribune appeared in March 1997, a month before his death. His memorial service was held on a sunny day in Wrigley Field.

I'm pushing 80, a retired elementary teacher, and well remember using a few examples of Rokoy's columns, that appeared in our local paper, to help my group of gifted students understand satire. In discussions with my grand daughter, I realized she was having same issue with a writing assignment. I went on line and purchased this, laughed so much I had to order the other. Now, I cannot part with either one, want to share with friends in my "snowbird" village, so had to buy another copy to give my grandchild! I read and giggle, and I have only been to Chicago twice, and neither time did I get out of the car! This is great humorous reading no matter where you live or where you have been! Enjoy

Before purchasing this book I had never read a Mike Royko column. I am not from Chicago and I do not recall seeing his column in the newspapers I read.The book is a treat. Mike Royko wastes no words. Many of Royko's columns in the book are about life's absurdity, which Royko notes with biting satire. At other times he is sentimental. As another reviewer noted, the piece Mike Royko wrote after the death of his first wife was very moving. Amazingly Mike Royko had no educational background to be a writer. He taught himself via on the job training.I did note some possible inconsistencies in the columns in the book. This is not a criticism. Mike Royko had a debater's ability to argue either side of an issue. Also, people are entitled and frequently should change their opinions based upon new facts and thoughts.I highly recommend this book. The introductions or commentaries to each decade of Mike Royko's career written by Lois Wille add significantly to the book.

I always find it hardest to write reviews for books that I like unconditionally. The genius of this work just seems... too obvious for words.Royko has a good eye for unsung heroes, as in "Mighty Teddy Still the Champ." First describing a "twenty-eight-year-old muscle-head" who earns six figures, he contrasts this with an talented, gritty, but unknown Chicago softball star who played about 250 games a year for 20+ years.Royko also has a keen eye for absurdity, as in "Don't Let Food Bug You," where he describes actual legal definitions for acceptable defect levels. "Don't ask me why they allow fewer insects in apple butter than in raisins, but more rodent hairs," he comments. "I guess it's a matter of taste."Royko has an obsession with justice and bluntly cuts through the absurdity of government beaurocracy, as in "A Faceless Man's Plea," the story of a veteran whose request for help in restoring his blown up face are replied to in form letters from the VA.Perhaps most impressively, whenever it seems that Royko gets backed into a corner, he fights back with humor- and ALWAYS wins. On of the high points for me is "High Rise Man," where Royko responds to criticism that he is drifting away from his working class roots. "As an amateur anthropologist, I was familiar with the ways of Two Flat Man, Bungalow Man, Tavern Man...," he claims. "I decided to follow the example of Margaret Mead, the late social anthropologist, whose method was to be part of the tribal culture she studied."

His story telling and satirical style are unmatched. I feel I was transported back in time. My 24 year old daughter also loved this book.

Brought back wisdom that is as relative now as it was back then. Mike was such a good writer to help put any circumstance into perspective. Enjoyed this book.

As an existential, Jewish philosopher, Buber takes the seriousness of the ‘eternal Thou.’ Only through the ‘Thou’ can a person be an ‘I.’ In other words, the ‘supreme meeting’ in the pure relation of I-Thou, which demands the whole person, is a revelation that completely changes the person. However, in the aftermath, the contemptuous habit of the person is to warp the ‘Thou’ into an ‘It’–understandable, manageable, and conquerable. Buber likens this deplorable act as replacing God for an idol. So, what can be done? Buber exhorts two exercises: (1) treat the world and others as ‘Thou’ than ‘It” and (2) prayer. With a sacramental view, Buber affirms that the world and everything in it are ‘Thou’ pointing to the ‘eternal Thou.’ If we cannot treat worldly ‘Thou’ rightly, how can we possibly respect the ‘eternal Thou’? This book is a beautiful, inspired work of art by a brilliant young man. It elucidates the subjective/objective dichotomy in human experience better than anyone before or since. As Kaufman notes, Buber has impressive antecedents including Jesus, Hillel and Kant, but this work elaborates upon the aphorisms of those earlier thinkers, making their insights fresh and more complete. Beware that Buber tends to drift off into romantic, idiosyncratic gibberish at times, especially in Part 2. So, don't expect to be able to grasp everything that he says. Still, there are many profound truths in this small volume. Respecting the subjective view of each human being does not mean that ethical behavior or truth is subjective. There is a place for objectivity. But, in relating to human beings, subjectivity must be acknowledged. ".... without It, a human being cannot live. But, whoever lives with only that is not human."

Buber's I AND THOU is one of the major examples of the modernist attempt to re-define or re-imagine the spiritual dimensions of reality. Walter Kaufmann's is the standard translation of a work that he himself admits is difficult to read or to translate. Despite these difficulties, this book is central for anyone interested in modern philosophy or spirituality. Kaufmann's introduction is thoughtful and helpful.

I love Martin Buber's language in describing relationships as either "I-Thou" or "I-It". I find this very helpful when working with groups to help them understand how subtle differences can quickly change the relationship and damage communications. While the concept is simple, the nuances and subtle issues in practice are certainly not and like all good human relations, requires a great deal of study, practice and more practice. With that in mind, this translation of the poetic original I-Thou by Buber needed more for me to understand and embrace it more fully. To that end, I found Kenneth Paul Kramer's "Martin Buber's I and Thou; Practicing Living Dialogue" to be a very good companion resource.

"I and Thou" by Martin Buber is one of the most important books ever written.First published in 1923, in my opinion, it is certainly the most important book of the 20th century. Over the course of decades, it affected religious and philosophical thinking throughout the Western world, and even in some Asian places.Buber shows how the relationships between people, between people and the world and between people and God are pivotal in how we see the world."To man the world is twofold, in accordance with his twofold attitude ...in accord with the twofold nature of the primary words he speaks ..."The one primary word is the combination I-Thou."The other primary word is the combination I-It ...," says Buber at the beginning of this work.This is much more complex than can be explained here, which is why you need to read this book of only 137 pages, including the postscript.In short, when we approach someone with the attitude of I-It, we see him or her as an object. This is the attitude we often take at work, and the attitude which allows us to exploit the world.When we approach someone with the attitude of I-Thou, we see him or her as the unique and existentially real person he or she really is at heart. We see that person's soul and can never treat him or her as an object in any way.This attitude is also the way we address the world when it seems magical, such as in moments when nature calls to us and we see it as part of ourselves and ourselves as a part of it.I-Thou is how we address God when our hearts and souls open to let the Infinite in, when the spirit of God touches us.In other words, I-Thou is when we are in true relation with anything, when the boundaries we set up between ourselves and the world come down.Unfortunately, since we live in a material world, there are times when we must address the world as I-It, which is where troubles begin.Buber was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher who was a part of the Zionist movement as the editor of its central newspaper, but later became an advocate of a joint Palestinian-Jewish homeland to share what is Israel today.Since Buber wrote "I and Thou" in idiosyncratic German, with a highly poetic and metaphorical structure, there are differences in how some think it should be translated. Personally, I prefer the translation Buber worked on with Ronald Gregor Smith, because it retains its poetic and reverent tone, but the most available translation is a later translation by Walter Kaufmann. Readers may have to find used copies to find the Smith translation, as I did, get the Kindle edition or try the interlibrary loan system.Even if you've read this gem, it bears reading again. Katherine Pease Routledge writes with clarity, a little humor, and kindness. Something someone wrote in a review made me want to do a little research on her life and it was sad to learn that she was later institutionalized for mental illness. She was married at the age of 40 in 1906 and wrote this book about the voyage to and from Easter Island in her early 50's. It's hard to believe that she later suffered from extreme mental illness.This book begins with the preparations for the trip. I assumed that there was a grant that paid all the expenses, but later learned that she was from a very wealthy family and paid for the building of their 90 foot yacht and, I assume, most of the travel costs which must have been considerable at the time.The preparations for the trip were extremely interesting to me as were the details of their voyage to Easter Island. And, of course, the research, discoveries and descriptions of the figures was fascinating. I have to admit I zoned out at the attempts at interviewing the elderly Easter Island inhabitants of the island to try to get more information as to where they originally came from and old customs and what the ancient writing actually said. Her guesses as to what the unreliable interviews meant bothered me as too unscientific.I originally read this book on my Kindle. It was full of typos and missing so much punctuation that I had to read many phrases and sentences again. I also felt the pictures were small and unclear, but that could have just been the fault of my Kindle Fire. I ended up ordering the book so that I could see the pictures more clearly. I am pretty sure the paper book would seem much more coherent also. I just received the book today and while paging through it didn't see all the typos and punctuation errors. This book is available at this time in a paperback version for less than the hardcover edition.In addition to the paper book I ordered the Katherine Routledge biography. I am anxious to learn more about her life.If you have any interest in Easter Island and the amazing statues I would definitely get this book. I hope to go there one day.

This reviewer first heard of this non-fiction travel book when I recently read the novel "Easter Island" by Jennifer Vanderbes (please enjoy my reader review of that novel too). That author made reference to the using Routledge's true story in her own novel. The main characters are based on Routledge and her 1914 Easter Island adventure expedition. This is a perfect example of the truth being stranger than the fiction. The book is written in a very folksy light manner that was typical of many 1919 publications. Katherine Routledge and her husband "decided to see the Pacific before we died, and asked the anthropological authorities at the Britsh Museum what work there remained to be done, the answer was, `Easter Island.'" So in 1910 this wealthy couple decides to mount an exhibition to Easter Island. The first step is to build a 90-foot custom designed yacht in which to make the journey that they named "Mana." The Royal Navy "lent the Expedition a Lieutenant on full pay for navigation and survey." By this time the reader has a pretty good idea that Katherine Routledge wasn't a typical British citizen who wanted to go on a little ocean adventure. She seems more like a character out of Jules Verne science fiction novel. This may have been a scientific journey, but the expedition traveled in typical British Empire comfort. Katherine Maria Pease Routledge was the second child of a very wealthy Quaker Family who decided to become an archaeologist. Her travel adventure is wonderfully related in this nearly 400-page reprint of the original 1919 book. The book is greatly enhanced by the addition of numerous drawings and photographs from the voyage. Routledge and her husband had previously published a book on the Kikuyu people of East Africa called "With a Prehistoric People." Routledge, because of the time she arrived and researched the island was able to interview many people and study many traditions (such as tattooing) and works of art that had disappeared by the time later scientists arrived to study the island, its culture and the mysterious stone monuments the "Moai." So typical of the glory years of the British Empire, lots of odd things happened even after the expedition ended. "The Royal Cruising Club Challenge Cup...was in 1917, awarded to `Mana" on her return...for a remarkable cruise of the Pacific." The two Pitcairners who joined the return voyage to England, who spoke "the pure Elizabethan English of the Bible and Prayer Book" were introduced to King George and Queen Mary and later provided passage back to the smallest colony of the British Empire. "Only in England" could be applied to this story. It's a fascinating, fun read. It really does resemble a Jules Verne novel, only it really happened and was dutifully reported and the reader can look at the photos and admire the detailed drawings as well as read the written account.

This book may have been scanned and processed from the original as there are some typos. The pictures too are scanned poorly. If you can look past the technological limitations , you will love this book not only for its exploration of Easter Island but also for its account of sailing around the world during Ww1

Probably the first book anyone should read if interested in real facts about Easter Island history and folklore. Only reason I gave it 4-stars was because the photos (and there are many) are all black and white. i was hoping for color photography and the black and white photos make the book seem outdated, which it is not. Recommend anyway as the facts far outweigh the lack of color.

I visited Rapa Nui in 2015 and it's amazing to read her story and see the photos taken from this expedition.

I am intrigued by the travel journals of the early 1900's, especially women. Women like Katherine were very hardy souls, working and living in a man's world. They traveled under conditions that today we wouldn't dream of paying to go on a trip like that. In addition, it's a great look into the culture of some of the ports of South America and of Easter Island prior to a lot of contact with white people.

If you want to have some idea of what the island was like a century ago, this is the best book on the subject.

This is an excellent book, very entertaining. A true reflection of the thoughts and opinions of the time period. So politically incorrect for present day, but amusing nonetheless.

If you've read the description and are thinking you'd like to read this book, chances are you are at least somewhat aware of the ideals hammered into many young girls' heads, and how quickly those ideals are wielded as weapons or barriers once a woman fails meet them. There is hard information: facts, numbers, transcripts of police reports, that could have the power to open up hearts and minds, but I have 100% confidence that this novel will be ignored and dismissed by those who could learn something really profound from it.But if you've made it to this review page, and made it to the end of this review, go ahead and read this book. It's worth your time.

Becoming Unbecoming is a challenging but important read that thoroughly illuminates the culture of violence against women that still exists today. As the ripper primarily focused his attacks upon prostitutes, the public had a disgusting lack of empathy for attacks against working women, and acted like the attacks on non sex workers were uniquely transgressive to Yorkshire and that the killer had broken some kind of code he was supposed to be following. The tragic story of this graphic novel is a powerful argument for increasing understanding of consent, psychological support, and the presence of female voices in our communities.

This sensitvely-drawn graphic memoir I guess you could call it, (as opposed to graphic novel) is a unique approach to a difficult topic - sexual abuse. With all the recent revelations of men in power as sexual predators and the #MeToo movement, this book couldn't be more timely.

This is an unusual approach to story telling but still one that I found very engaging and thought provoking. It's a story with more questions than answers, but given how little we walk about these topics that makes perfect sense.

This book is so simple yet totally helping my two year learn his colors. When he has a little patience, I can flesh out the Christmas Carol story a bit. And when he's normal, I can race through just reciting the colors. This is a great book to add to your library.

This is my least favorite BabyLit so far, despite loving the original book. My issue is that it's supposed to be a colors primer, but it's very confusing what the color is on each page. The background colors are not the colors of the page, overwhelming the item that is the color. For example, the "purple drink" is so small that you can't hardly see the color purple, and the rest of the pages are totally other colors, orange or something. It would be much better if the primary color on the page was the color they're trying to name.

This purchase was my introduction to the BabyLit series. I really wasn't sure what I was getting when I purchased this. I love this classic tale, and wanted to begin to introduce my son (18 months) to it in a "baby friendly" way. In case you are wondering, as I was, I will explain a bit of the book, which I am guessing is similar to the other books in this series.There is no plot or story here, and the characters are not really introduced although some of them are visible. Each page shows an item or character from the story and a few words, usually including a color, describing it. For example, one of the pages shows a non-threatening Jacob Marley and says "Gold Chains". This is basically how the book works. I doubted what impact this book would have on my child, but he did seem to enjoy it somewhat, however, he doesn't ask for it like he does other books. He does remember some of the pages. Because we made it fun, he did enjoy periodically saying "Bah Humbug" which made everyone laugh. I can't say whether it is a great purchase or not. I'm not too sure how well it introduces little ones to the classics, but it does reinforce descriptors like colors, and my son enjoyed it although it is clearly not his favorite read.

Written in the same format as the other Baby Lit books (one or two words and a picture per page), this is a nicely illustrated colors book for babies/toddlers. My littlest enjoys looking at the pictures and "repeating" the words. My older one did recognize it was modeled after Dicken's classic tale. Personally, I buy these because they are baby friendly re-makes of the stories I enjoy, but, that being said, it's still a cute baby book.

Great book! The Adams/Oliver books are so beautifully illustrated - I bought a bunch! This definitely surpasses expectations and captures more characters than you would expect.Came quickly from seller & in good condition.

Fun for the Christmas season, and maybe even a primer for the classic tale, but not very useful in truly teaching my 25-month-old daughter colors. The colors identified in the illustrations are not very pronounced among the rest of the colors on the page. My non-lit-loving husband said, "this book is stupid." It is not stupid, but I kinda get where he is coming from . . .

Baby lit books are our all time favorite books! They are small books, but that does not underestimate the goodness inside. We have ordered just about all of the baby lit books and love to swap them out during seasons and holidays. I also love that they have different primers and different types of learning for your little one. These books are great gift ideas, there are a lot of genres to choose from. The artwork and colors are bright and vivid, very pleasant to look at. The mommy and the teacher in me loves and approves these books!

I'm a big fan of the classic Christmas Carol. So, I was so excited when I found a board book version to share with my daughter. We sat down to read it only to find there is no story to read. I had to tell the story from memory while pointing at the pictures. I love that the author is trying to teach kids their colors, but I don't feel the book did that either. The cover is the best part of this book. It draws you in and makes you think it is going to be awesome. Too bad the second you open the first page you realize oops you just wasted $10.00. I guess I should have done some research. I let my excitement get the best of me. What a waste!

I bought this for a three-year-old who likes bedtime stories. Unfortunately, there is no story here. It is just pictures with a very few words like “black boots” or “purple drink.” So it didn’t really work out.

Me gustó que explica de manera muy sencillo y amplio todo el tema de inversiones. Este libro es una lectura obligada para fortalecer el músculo mental-financiero. No es algo fuera de lo común y eso me parece que lo hace bueno para los que no somos expertos.

Buen libro. Aunque está basado en el ámbito mexicano, puedes hacer la analogía con las del país donde vives y tomar tus decisiones de inversión. Los conceptos son claros y muy bien explicados. Muy recomendable.

Buen libro, excelente introducción a las opciones de inversión en México, escrito en un lenguaje sencillo y claro. Si no sabes nada de inversiones es un buen inicio.
