How's this for a distinguished way for a reviewer to describe a book? It was okay. While parts of it were mildly amusing, many more parts of it were absolutely boring. Because I'm the kind of reader who finishes what I start no matter what, I found myself plodding through too much of the book to give it more than three stars. But I have to give author Garrison Keillor a lot of credit for creating this fictional town of Lake Wobegon, Minnesota. He not only populates it with a wide assortment of characters, but also gives it a history and backstory that are a real credit to the man's phenomenal imagination. That said, the history and backstory of Lake Wobegon are yawningly tedious and uninteresting—and that's the entire first third of the book. So enormous patience and dedication are required on the part of the reader. The book is essentially a series of vignettes about life in Lake Wobegon, taking place primarily—but not exclusively—in the 1950s, with bold leaps—sometimes without warning—into the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Yes, it can be very confusing. (At one point, I thought we were in the '50s-'60s timeframe when suddenly there was a reference to the rock band AC/DC.) The stories bleed into each other, sometimes without even the benefit of a paragraph break.More than anything, I was disappointed. I expected more.

After listening to Keillor on the radio for many years, I figured it was time to read one of his books. Lake Wobegon Days is a great description of the author's fictitious hometown in Minnesota. Keillor did a great job of bringing me into the town--that I wish was my hometown, and watching the antics of the residents. As a normal "fast" reader, I was surprised how long it took me to get through this book. However, it dawned on me that it was due to Keillor's slow story-telling voice echoing through my head as I read, reading the book to me--which only made the it better. On a few occasions I tried to plow through some pages at my normal pace and in my own voice, but it didn't work. I went back and let Keillor's voice read it to me and it all made sense.

... I can hear his melodious voice throughout the book ... about the time I first began listening to a prairie home companion I'd started a relationship with a woman whose parents had come from a small town in Wisconsin. I'd come from a slightly larger town in Indiana. Had cousins in Minneapolis. The Hoosier farmers in my family were cosmopolitan compared to foreigners, but republicans, Lutherans, not much on humor. My soon to be wife was of Norwegian stock. A candle I called them the word droll epitomizes keillors humor. Very, very insightful in the dreaded environment of such stark, damaging functionality ... No wonder alcoholism is so prevalent, but that word's. Rarely used, as it was in my Catholic Irish family. The sharp edge of ethnic heritages impact on humans is like a surgical scalpel in keillors hands. Superb a tremendously funny read, but opens up some painful experiences, too

Read thi book and find out. And who would have thought of blending three events, Lutheran pastors on a pontoon boat, a hot air balloon, and a scattering of ashes cremony could produce such laughs from a reader. I actually started laughing so hard I thought I'd never stop. If laughter is good for the soul, mine definitely got a lift from this book.

Great stories by a beloved and gifted writer. Along the way ou'll learn the history and characters of Lake Wobegon. If you love Prairie Home Companion, you'll appreciate the stories here that give background to many of his weekly presentations on public radio.

its garrison keillor... what could be bad about this :)

I have listened to and read most of Keillor's material. I purchased this for a long car ride and enjoyed it again. I read the book several years ago and listened to on the old tape deck. Glad to see his material for the Echo.

Great funny clean story teller.

#64,125 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I write books for kids, so I like to read the same from the best childrens' authors I can find. Hence, I read Dan Gutman's books aimed at the slightly older end of his audience, your basic 3rd through 5th grader. Dan writes a lot of books. I mean that. His Baseball Card series is a great way to learn a lot about baseball and historic figures in the game. In that series, the protagonist uses baseball cards to travel through time. Instruction and hilarity ensue. Now, the gang in question (The Flashback Four) use a very special smart board to travel back in time. There are more restrictions on the process, but the end result in the same. The kids get to witness, and participate in, historic events such as the sinking of the Titanic, Lincoln's speech at Gettysburg, or, this time, the destruction of Pompeii. No details here, 'cause why spoil the plot? Except that they do all get home in the end, which is more than you could say for the Titanic adventure. (Oops. Sorry.) In any case, you'll like learning about life in Pompeii, from bakeries (they found hundreds of loaves of bread in one) to every day craftsmen's shops, to gladiatorial games. All under the looming specter of that famous volcano blowing its top and destroying the city, and the Flashback Four. Cool, huh? Want a good adventure where you learn some stuff and it's easy? No problem! Just buy and read this book.

Flashback Four is a must read! Dan Gutman cleverly intertwines excitement, humor and history. Four children space travel back to 79 AD with the purpose of taking a photo before mount Vesuvius erupts and buries the city of Pompeii. I am impressed with the research that Dan Gutman did for this book. I learned a lot!

My 11 year old son loves all of Dan Gutman's books and this was no exception. He said it was exciting and he learned about Pompeii in the process. Now he's waiting for book 4 to come out!

My 9 years-old love it. Looking forward for the next one.

My 10 year old son is a huge fan of Dan Gutman. He loves all of his books and Flashback Four, The Pompeii Disaster is no exception! He couldn't wait to read the latest installment in this series and then read it, cover to cover, in one sitting!Dan Gutman writes amazing stories that are both funny and informative. His books have played a large part in turning my 10 year old and 6 year old into voracious readers!

From my 8yo, who finished it within 24 hours of purchase: This was a great book! It was very exciting, and it had a lot of funny parts! I highly recommend it.
