Short and easy chapters made this book a nice read for a course that required it. I do wish that it would have gone into more detail for many of the topics it discussed.

I work in a CPA firm and found this book to recommend simplification in writing to the point of absurdity. It is a fact that there is a 'language' for business, and this book spends far too much time advising the reader to take complex or wordy phrases and simplify them to an almost moronic degree. While I agree that business writing is often overly and unnecessarily convoluted, this book seems to ignore a business-like paring down and instead invite the reader to return to elementary-school quality writing. I definitely did not feel that the book was a worthwhile investment, especially at the inflated price for which it retails. It is possible that it would benefit those in the accounting field whose clientele are completely non-business oriented or have little business knowledge.

I ordered the later version of the book.

After reading Shankar's Fundamentals of Physics last year, I couldn't help but get a feeling of satisfaction upon realizing that, in only a little over 400 pages, I had reviewed the essentials of introductory physics in stunning elegance. I credit that book with giving me an intuitive outlook on physics, something that has come in handy in my upper division physics classes.There's something oddly satisfying about Shankar's writing style and the clear expository manner in which he explains physics. Shankar has a way in which he can explain the essentials of something complicated, without compromising the depth of the subject. Hence, drawing once again on his prodigious skills as a teacher, his Fundamentals of Physics II covers not just the essentials of Electrodynamics and Magnetism, it goes above and beyond to even explain the role of electromagnetism in relativity.Among the other topics included in his masterful book, one can also find a few chapters in optics that contain a nice and neat introduction to the principle of least action. The section on quantum mechanics is very well written, and serves as a very neat introduction to the basic principles of quantum mechanics (for those interested, Shankar wrote another excellent book titled "Principles of Quantum Mechanics." A more advanced text, but worth the read). The mathematics throughout the book is not terribly challenging and will come in handy for future courses.Overall, I am quite satisfied with Shankar's latest entry into the Open Yale course series, as this is a worthy sequel to his previous Fundamentals of Physics textbook. I will be using his new book as a refresher before I take my first serious E&M upper division class at Cal Poly.For anyone who is looking to enhance their physics intuition and knowledge, one can never go wrong with Shankar.Update: Now that I have taken E&M I and E&M II and gotten A's in both classes, I can confidently say that without Shankar was hugely helpful in my understanding of the subject. I will now be taking Quantum Mechanics and (you guessed it) I'll be using Shankar's masterful Quantum Mechanics textbook.

This is a GREAT BOOK!Fundamentals of Physics II contains 3 main topics: Electromagnetism (Ch 1-15), Optics (Ch16-18), and Quantum Mechanics (Ch19-24).Each part is beautifully presented. Dr. Shankar is a great teacher! Some professors (I've had some) know the subject matter deeply but don't know how to teach it. Dr. Shankar has the gift of clearly teaching the subject matter and also unexpectedly throwing in tidbits of dry physics humor, both of which students thrive on. I'm a firm believer that a sense of dry humor, applied to physics, gives learning the added feature of entertainment! Shankar is a master at this!Its fun being able to watch the live classroom teaching on You-Tube from which the book is written. Especially fun is watching Shankar's interaction with his students.A separate website also contains support materials showing problem sets along with problem solutions. Some of the problem sets, however, didn't seem to correspond to the chapters in the book correctly. Nonetheless, a great book overall.

Wonderful elucidation by perhaps the most enjoyable physics lecturer since Feynman. If you’ve attempted the Feynman Lectures on Physics you’ve come to assume a dizzying number unexpected gems of insight will jump out at you that completely change your world view; Shankar’s gems are less disorienting, but really satisfying and his humor is subtle and lots of fun. I believe that, for each volume of the series, a companion volume with a large number of SOLVED problems to go along with the text would be an invaluable addition and push the ratings to five stars for each. The mathematics volume doesn’t really satisfy that need and often takes a little too much for granted with respect to the reader's background. The second book in Dr. Shankar's introduction to Physics. I love this book and the first book in the series. I wish they were around when I was an undergraduate science major. I bought them to review my Physics which was pretty rusty. These books help get me back on track. I'm a nerd so when I say they are both just a plain good read I guess you may want to take that with a grain of salt. Dr. Shankar has a style that makes Physics interesting, approachable, and as I said a good read. Make sure you start with the first volume.

The second volume of Yale Professor Shankar's first-year physics video lectures available on U-Tube, Yale, and elsewhere. Dr. Shankar's theoretical lectures do not include experimental demonstrations that MIT's Walter Lewin was famous for, but he's equally lucid, and also more expert in quantum theory. A great way to review your college physics or learn it for the first time.

Excellent explanations of each topic. Instead of the dry text that has the equations, but little else; this book has extensive explanations of the background physics. When you are done with a chapter, you understand both the underlying physics and the equations. The online lectures are also excellent and follow the book perfectly.

This is a great textbook to read up on physics. There is some expectation that the reader has already seen this material. Great book for a nice review and it has more in depth explanations, as well as pictures to help clarify things.

The introduction to quantum mechanics is worth the price of the book by itself (I have not read the other parts yet). The author is an experimented teacher and it shows. He does not dumb down things one bit and at the same time he does not hide behind opaque mathematical formalism (no bras or kets, no emphasis on operators, etc.).

This book is worthless if you own a Z3. I just wanted info on basic stuff like oil changes and spark plugs. Forget it. Buy the "real service manual" if you own a Z3.

Chilton's is the best bang for the buck and is always much more detailed than Haynes.

The best book I can find for my 1995 BWM 318ti anywhere. I like doing the maintenance myself whenever possible and this book makes it simple. It is very detailed in pictures which is what is the most helpful. Well worth it!

The manual covers many of the E36/3-Series, but I personally could not find enough information to help me on my Z3. With all the other models covered, it makes it confusing to know which one they make reference to at any time!

Skip this, you'd do better with a google search. It's well worth the money to get the bently manual instead. This one is way too over generalized. 1997 BMW Z-3

Surprisingly, this book has been helpful when my "101 Performance Projects" and Bentley didn't quite give me enough information. The three manuals have been absolutely supplementary, and missing any one of them would have made my work a bit more difficult. I'm an amateur at most jobs I take on for my 1995 BMW, and have so far satisfactorily completed each task. I should add, "at a fraction of the cost of using a professional mechanic."

This book is just too simple. Good for the know-how's and for the preventive maintenance works, simply too simply and not detail enough for further BMW specific kind of works. Rather to spend little more money for a better shop manual than getting this 'reference' book.

Rinker (the author) and his brother decided on a whim to build a covered wagon, buy a set of mules to pull it, and head out on the Oregon Trail. They started In Missouri and travelled through Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon to get there - over 2000 miles. They essentially traced the route the settlers took, over 400,000 of them made the trip in the middle of the 1800's.The book consists of several things - the story of the trip I great detail, ruminations about Rinker's father and how he made him who he was, and passages about the West. These included, among others, information about the importance of mules, how the wagon business prospered as a result of the Trail, the impact of the trail on the Native American population, and how the Mormons (LDS) affected the trail and its history.In the beginning the sheer amount of information is a bit off-putting. After the first few chapters are complete it sort of becomes part of the scenery and blends in. Additionally he and his brother become humanized and there is often a warm feeling present.They actually do make it after making their way through many hair-raising adventures. All of those are told with a breathless spirit that adds to the interest. If you have an interest in the West and how it came to be, you will enjoy this wonderful book.

Rinker Buck is hilarious. I was fortunate enough listen to him at a local library and it was one of the best author talks I've attended. There's a little bit of everything in here from American history that's all but been forgotten to why you should sleep next to a pile of manure. What else do you need?

I'd heard about the Oregon Trail, but didn't really know much about it. I bought this book at the suggestion of a friend. There are many books on the subject, old and newer. This one is current and informative, entertaining and a picture of the changes in the trail which was at its height in the 1840's. Obviously, Buck and his brother had very different problems than the original pioneers. That's why I decided to first read a first hand experience written by Francis Parkman in around 1845. I'm glad I did and I'd suggest that to anyone reading this recent account. Both old and new books are easy reads and excellent glimpses into an important part of American history. The newer book however might appeal to a man or someone more into the technicalities of wagon construction, mule harnesses, etc., but this doesn't take away from the relationships of people on the trail or that of the two brothers.Both good reads!

I had seen the writer on a TV show and ordered the book immediately. It was quite an epic journey of two totally different brothers who set out on a journey to trace the steps of so many pioneers who had traversed this trip across unknown territory. I was amazed that they were still able to find much of the original trail, especially through the mountains! Loved how Rinker was able to weave his own personal story/relationship with his father as he and his brother traveled. They had many interesting experiences with some colorful people who helped them along their trip. The ONLY couple who were awful to them, I hope were remorseful about their attitudes, especially when they see their names in print! It is a really, really good book and highly recommended--some strong language between the brothers! Loved that the mules have a good home together after all that travel!

This is a non fiction narrative primarily about two brothers taking a three mule team, covered wagon across the historical Oregon Trail. The narrative has a popular style flow and is easily read. There is a lot of information about the Oregon Trail. Personally, I found it very instructional. As an amateur history student, I probably doubled my personal knowledge about The Oregon Trail by carefully reading this work. The author also includes a good deal of personal stories insights about his own life that I found very interesting.I closely followed the progress of the trip as described. I used maps and took notes. I enjoyed that very much. I read additional articles about the various locations. I found the entire exercise very illuminating. I plan on following the Oregon Trail as best I can on highways this fall. The author often left the highways with his covered wagon.The author also shares his personal views on subjects such as religion. He makes it clear he is an atheist. That is all well and good but at times I found his lectures tiresome. After all there is a reason that the word "faith" exists and there is a reason we each know what it means and how it feels. In the end, Atheism is still a faith based belief system. Speaking for myself, that was probably the part of this otherwise fine work that I liked the least.The author also went on a brief tirade against law enforcement. I am not sure that was necessary. The outburst was not related to this adventure. The author's experience during the trip with law enforcement seemed all positive.In the event one reads this fine work and enjoys it as I did, by coincidence, a friend recommended to me another book that I also enjoyed and is of a similar format, except it is about a motorcycle trip. The name of the book is "The Old Man And The Harley" by John J. Newkirk.Thank You...

I loved this book! Buck has a distinctive voice and persona, and even though I disagree with plenty of his political views and other assessments, I enjoyed his take on life as he crossed the Oregon Trail. I've always been fascinated by the trail, and I savored every page. "I believe in crazyass passion... My corporeal self would be driving miles across the plains, but it was crazyass passion that would deliver me to the trail." I'm delighted that passion did indeed deliver Buck to the trail and that, through his book, he took me along for the ride.

Ignore negative criticism of this book. It has changed the way I pray and has allowed the meaning of the psalms to explode before me. My prayer life that has always tended toward the contemplative side has only become more so since learning how simple chanting can be. This book has made clear why chant and psalmody is vital for Christians. Once you start chanting the psalms, suddenly it is hard simply to read them again. Cynthia Bourgeault has given me a gift for which I can not thank her enough.

This is a great book. It is well written and has a great presentation. The author takes her time to present each topic and the included CD has enough examples for you to quickly pick up the tunes. I give this book 5-stars because it is so well done. For me, it is way too much. The first section and the first chapter of the second section was all I needed. Even so, worth every penny. If you are really into chanting the Psalms, this book will make you giddy. If you just want to get started, this book is perfect.

Love the simplicity of the narrative and the Chant included. We are going to be using some of them here during our regular Prayer sessions. Thankyou.

I have great admiration for Bourgeault. As a musician, I am considering forming a chant group. This is the best resource I have found.

Wish I'd found it years ago. First half is an excellent section on the value of daily Psalm chanting; second half is nuts and bolts -- including extremely basic, anyone-can-do-it starting tones. Accompanying CD is very helpful. If you want to chant the Psalms, don't waste your time reading anything else first. Start with this, then move on to other supporting works after you set up your practice.

This book is a great follow-on to the author's CD set called Singing the Psalms. This book and CD, combined with Phyllis Tickle's trilogy of The Divine Hours, will give you everything you need in order to pray the Divine Office every day. Recommended for all lay contemplatives who long to practice the monastic path of prayer while still living in the world.
