The basic facts are clear. The US must move to solar and other forms of renewable energy to slow down global warming; lower the environmental costs of extracting coal, oil, and natural gas; reduce the adverse public health impact of fossil fuel emissions; and end our dependency on overseas sources of petroleum. But did you know that the move to solar energy is inevitable? That, sooner or later, the economic advantages of solar will be so compelling that the relatively few people today who still believe the coal and oil industries' propaganda will eventually be forced to decide to install photovoltaic panels on their rooftops and commercial buildings? That's the message that emerges from reading between the lines of Rooftop Revolution, the paean to solar energy by Danny Kennedy, one of the avatars of the rising solar industry. Kennedy demonstrates with a wealth of statistics and a captivating narrative that the price of solar electricity from rooftop installations is on such a steep downward track, the pace of technological innovation in the industry is so swift, and the price of oil is on such an inevitable long-term rising trend, that within a very few years it will become impossible to ignore the widening gap in cost between electricity from solar and that from fossil-fuel generating plants -- a gap in favor of solar. Not so incidentally, Kennedy reports, "the tide turned in 2010 when fully half of new electric generation coming online globally was renewable. In the United States, renewables were 25 percent of new electric generation." And "going solar by 2015 will be economically rational for two-thirds of the households in the United States."However, Kennedy makes it clear that he isn't satisfied to let history run its course. The urgent need to lower global warming, and the potential of solar energy to create millions of desperately needed new jobs, together force him to advocate for public support to urge changes in state and federal energy policy. In Rooftop Revolution, Kennedy makes a powerful case for the adoption of solar on the basis of its job-creating power alone: the solar energy industry hires roughly twice as many people as the fossil fuel business per dollar invested. And the total number of jobs in the solar industry is growing at a ferocious pace while employment in the fossil fuel sector is shrinking. As the author makes clear, a sensible federal policy of incentives to promote solar and not to encourage the use of fossil fuels could greatly speed up the move to solar energy. However, the powers that be in Washington DC have decided otherwise. Despite all the cries of foul from the US Chamber of Commerce and the oil industry that the government is giving away the store to the solar industry -- they point to Solyndra as "proof" -- the facts tell us a much different story. In fact, the oil, coal, and natural gas industry has received federal subsidies in the last decade that are more than an order of magnitude greater than those granted to renewables (about 10 times for nuclear, 11 times for natural gas and petroleum, and 22 times for coal!).About that Solyndra case, by the way: the company was the only one of more than 40 firms that received loans under the same program and proceeded to fail, and the loan program had already set aside more than five times the loss from Solyndra as a reserve against bad loans.Kennedy quotes Jeremy Rifkin's assertion that "The great economic revolutions in history occur when new communications technologies converge with new energy systems." This statement, which encapsulates the thesis of Rifkin's 2011 book, The Third Industrial Revolution (reviewed here), meshes with Kennedy's thinking in his description of the changing character of the electricity market. As the number of solar-equipped buildings on the grid increases, the role of the power companies will start to shift, employing them as brokers of a sort, managing the flow of the surplus electricity to fill in gaps elsewhere on the grid. However, Rifkin envisions this becoming the predominant or sole role of the power companies by mid-century; if Kennedy believes that, he doesn't indicate so in Rooftop Revolution. Instead, he dwells on the technical challenges facing the industry to incorporate surplus solar energy amounting to even less than half the total power in the system. The technology to accomplish that is almost market-ready, Kennedy points out, but it's not there yet.Rooftop Revolution offers an appealing overview of the present and prospects for solar energy, written in an engaging conversational style and brought to life by the author's autobiographical asides and his brief profiles of a number of the leading lights in bringing the power of the sun to life on Earth.Danny Kennedy is a co-founder and Executive Vice President of Sungevity, a fast-growing firm in Oakland, California, that installs custom-fitted residential solar systems around the US and now in The Netherlands as well. Kennedy was a campaign manager for Greenpeace for many years before launching Sungevity and is widely considered a leading authority on global energy issues.

An amazing book.Kennedy doesn't bother with the usual. There is little or no mention of clotheslines, conservation, daylighting, passive heating and cooling. Kennedy shrewdly ignores all of our whining struggles. We can only shake our heads. "This must be what lies ahead, so new yet so familiar". The high point of his efforts for me are his words, "Better than the wheel, the automobile, human flight and Google. The idea is spreading that solar power is better than fire: It provides the services we get from fire without burning stuff first. This reality is catching on and will soon be ablaze. I believe going solar is a shift in what it means to be human. It's our next big step." This needed to be said and Kennedy says it as naturally as he breathes. The rest of us may note "It has happened" but what? I was put off by his casual treatment of the grid. Should we not go off grid? How far can we trust his great courage and shrewdness? Should we not learn how to store what electricity does rather than electricity itself? Heat and cold, pumped water. A few batteries can take care of light and computers.Fearless Kennedy was drawn to conflict, protest Greenpeace. He is not intimidated by coal, oil, gas, uranium and their watch dogs. The hell with Henry Kissinger. Three cheers! But what about the banks? This is an eerie aspect about Sungevities and Kennedy's revolution. Smoggy freedom beats clean slavery. The rest of us better worry about "third party financing" for Kennedy had done his share. An interesting point is how much comfort we can have using very little electricity.

Pasted from Lenz Blog, hyperlinks working there removed here:I just bought the Kindle version of Danny Kennedy, Rooftop Revolution, How Solar Power Can Save Our Economy - and our Planet - from Dirty Energy. I found this over Twitter. Someone retweeted this from the book's twitter feed:"#Fact: 1,000 sq miles of solar would power the whole USA. The oil & gas industries use 10x that. pic.twitter.com/DHvmJWnQ @bruneski"I enjoyed reading this book. The author is clearly enthusiastic about the subject, and knows a lot. I learned several new facts. One interesting point he makes: Fossil fuel is also solar energy, though used in a "laughably inefficient way". I agree with that assessment. The inefficiency is masked by the fact that humanity is using the resources stored in millions of years in one year. But if anybody tried to produce fossil fuel from scratch the way nature has been doing it for us, they would quickly learn that waiting hundred of millions of years for your vast forests to be converted does not make a convincing business model.I liked the chapter about leading and inspiring people in the field of solar, some of whom I already had noticed. But not all of them. I would recommend including some information on Masayoshi Son in the next edition. In that chapter, I was especially interested in hearing about Solarmosaic. They are in the process of setting up an interesting crowdsourcing model for solar projects. Their website says they are now working with the Securities and Exchange commission on their business model.I already noted the interesting fact that 10 percent of the land used by the fossil fuel companies would be enough to generate all of the electricity for the United States (the object of the tweet above). I didn't know that.I didn't know that the IEA expects 12,000 GW of solar PV capacity in 2060. However, Kennedy writes that present installed capacity is around 50 GW world wide, which is not correct now. Maybe he wrote that part of the manuscript earlier, when it was about right. Capacity was already 67,4 GW at the end of 2011, with total world wide production of about 80 TWh in that year.I learned that Hawaii still generates more than 90 percent of its electricity from oil, which makes it an easy target to get blown out of the water by the competition from solar.I learned that solar has grown faster than the Internet since 1992, with 30,000 percent to 29,000 percent. That's not bad as a record.I didn't find many typos either. One is in the first sentence about Sven Teske, where it says "is German friend", with the "a" missing, another at location 1806 where it says "polices" instead of "policies".At location 350 Kennedy writes that Germany now gets a whopping 20 percent of its power from clean, sustainable energy. Actually, it is already 25% for the first six months of 2012.Kennedy has founded a company, Sungevity, that is trying to get solar panels cheaper and with less hassle to American costumers. I recall blogging about the still high costs of American solar compared to Germany."The biggest chunk comes from costs of the supply chain. American costumers pay about as much for that as for the solar panels. In contrast, the supply chain costs are almost invisible in Germany. That of course means a big chance for someone to reduce these costs. I hear the Americans have access to the Internet and a large pool of very talented people interested in setting up a business. Why can't someone get those solar panels delivered at about 20% of the present lavish cut the supply chain is getting?"From what I understand from reading the book, Sungevity is trying to do exactly that. What I found missing was a discussion of the new antidumping tariffs for Chinese solar panels, a question not without impact on the United States solar market.Anyway, I think this is required reading for anybody interested in energy issues, and in solar in particular.flag

#94,660 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

5 minutes into the book I figured I'd been tricked, and accidentally bought a self-published "Reacher" compilation. I literally went back to the beginning to look at the copyright info. It's horrible, sorry. I love the Jack Reacher books, I've read them all more than once - this is not one of them. It is an unorganized set of random factoids, Reacher quotes, and made up nonsense. A 99 cent book at best. Can't believe I paid $10...

Lately I have become somewhat of a Jack Reacher fan. Even though I saw the movie some time ago starring Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, I still did not search out the books about the guy. Recently I was given the first Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child and after reading it I was hooked.I like to know everything about a character in an action novel and decided to purchase this book (Jack Reacher’s Rules) which gives an interesting and informative outline of how Jack thinks about all kinds of things. I found this 152 page hardcover book, with an introduction by Lee Child, who created the Jack Reacher character, a quick and enjoyable read. It covers more than 55 areas of Jack’s rules which came from the Lee Child’s numerous novels. Some of the areas covered include the following: “Be prepared, choose your weapons, the United States Army Military Police, the rules of coffee, conquer your fear, confronting death, cracking codes and passwords, fighting, fighting tips, hand-to-hand combat, how to shake hands, hitchhiking rules, West Point, Lessons learned in the military, Hogan’s alley, how to tell if they’re lying, Reacher’s moral code, the science of the perfect shot, why it’s not smart to have a phone, how to win the battle, how to win the war” and much, much more.Even though some of the reviews were critical of this book I personally liked it because it gave me a guide to follow when I read more of Jack Reacher novels.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

To charge the price of a real novel for this worthless page after page of Reacher's thoughts on certain situaions with almost all coming from the Reacher novels I have read. If it was $1.99 then it barely would have been worth the price paid. Do not waste your time with this title!

This is a compendium of all things Reacher. From how many minutes it takes Jack to shower to how to walk up a set of stairs to avoid detection. Readers of the Reacher series of books will recognize bits of wisdom from many of the individual books. It's a handy reference guide to the 10 codes Reacher uses to communicate with fellow MPs, too. An indispensable guide to keep at hand.

A very quick read-through reminds you of the unique way Jack Reacher lives his life. He's a survivor with a good heart. He usually decides to protect someone along the way - literally - or protecting their rights. He's a hero. This is a tongue in cheek look at how Reacher survives. There is not a story here, this is NOT a novel. So, don't buy this if you think you'll be getting a story.

Read all of Jack Reacher novels in order. Enjoyed them and even the short stories...BUT THIS IS JUST random sentences triple spaced from the novels and elsewhere grouped by broad subject matter. Like reading random FaceBook posts. There is a whole chapter that is just a list of acronyms with the words making up the acronyms as explanations. There is no way anyone would set out to "write" this - it looks like the editors just did a phrase search on their hard drive containing all the Reacher novels and printed out the results. Don't waste your money. Only reason I posted one star is that Amazon requires it in order to post review!

This tiny little book (4.7X7.8) is a sham. Do not buy it. I would be surprised if anyone has actually read the entire book, as it is simply a collection of out of context snippets from other Reacher novels. This is not a novel.I have attempted to get a refund from Amazon and was effectively told to pound sand.Lee Child and Amazon have made a mistake in publishing and selling this book. They only compound the problem by not taking responsibility for the situation they have created.

If you've read the Reacher books, this is really more of a compendium of "Reacherisms" he uses throughout the novels.I own the entire series and purchased this to round out the collection. If you're a fan, it's kind of a fun read, but the content isn't anything really new.

From the perspective of presenting a top-down, very contemporary, articulate, complete, and thoroughly well-produced book, this reference gives you a handy all-in-one guide to system administration on Oracle Solaris 11.1. All the major and important system administration activities and procedures, as well as some minor facts which might seem trivial at first, but are actually very important, are covered in a clear and cogent way. If you had to wade through the huge volume of documentation provided by Oracle that comes with the software ( or use your Google-Fu), just to find out the details of some small fact or technique, you would realize how powerful this book really is. It will make your life with Solaris easier, like it did mine.Just a few examples: there is a section on dealing with removable media such as USB devices, drives, thumb drives. There is excellent coverage of Secure Shell, how to start it up, manage it, etc.. Those are practical and contemporary subjects that a modern UNIX System Administration book must cover. Also, there is extensive coverage of how to add packages to your base system via the command line, which is a very critical, practical System Administration topic!A tremendous added benefit- ZFS is covered and explained completely and beautifully!Even if this book cost 3 times what Amazon is charging, you must have it.Robert M. KoretskyUNIX: The TextbookEdited 4/7/14- A big benefit of using Solaris 11.1 instead of OpenIndiana (May the Computer Gods forgive me for espousing a commercial system over a freeware system) is that the IPS GUI Package Manager on Solaris 11.1 has access to more packages that actually can be installed on your system. Even though the author recommends and heavily illustrates using a command line version of the IPS Package Manager, I found that with the default Gnome desktop GUI and IPS GUI, I could download and install Python 2.7.3 with Tkinter built into it from the Solaris repository in a couple of easy steps. Very similar to using the command line pkg package management system in PC-BSD or FreeBSD to get new packages from the FreeBSD Repository.Edited 10/15/14- I'm into virtualization now, and it seems the common shortcoming of documentation on zones (this book included) is that no one tells you how to log into the zone from the Internet using ssh, FTP, or telnet, or how to actually install an application in the zone! For example, what IP address do you use to ssh into a zone running on a Solaris 11.2 machine, from somewhere on your LAN or the Internet? And as far as installing an application, I don't mean a full web server stack, just some simple app that you don't trust and want to put in a zone to test. This book shows you how to create and administrate zones (it is an administration book after all), but not how to actually use them in some simple cases! After all, it does do that with zfs. I'm hoping that the authors' advanced book will do that. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/o11-092-s11-zones-intro-524494.html is a web page at Oracle that has an excellent intro to zones, and shows in a few easy steps how to add apache-22 to a zone! Bravo! And the Oracle web page also adds the zone to rpool on the vdev that Solaris boots from- Dr. Calkins in his zone intro creates a new zpool on another hard disk for the zone. I don't quite get the rational for that.

While classic UNIX seems to be fading in favor of Linux, if you still use Solaris (Solaris 11.x), this book fills in the gaps where the Oracle manuals (while usually ok), aren't quite as clear. The SMF, ZFS, and networking were of particular interest to me and this book hit those targets pretty well. I still have Sun servers that were put into production in 2003 that are still humming along and doing what they need to do. We also have newer Sun equipment (M-series and T-series) that beat the pants off of their x86 counterparts. Especially when it comes to VM's. You just can't beat the Oracle VM's (zones) using VMWare. But, it does take competent administration on any system to keep peace amongst the user community. So, to fill in the gaps, this book was a big help.

Overall, the book was good for a transition from Solaris 10 or even Solaris 9 to the next generation of Solaris operating systems. For getting a system up and running and becoming familiar with it, this book will suffice. My interests extended beyond the scope of this book. Although zones were covered, there is a slim chance that I will use them so I glossed over this section. Maybe that is someone else's interest. My interest was the image packaging system, which was covered well. Then my interests reached into building a network server: installadm commands, creating services, DHCP, and building clients by Automated Installation over a network. It took a great deal of time referring to Oracle website postings to find the right commands. Finally, disaster backup and recovery using USB devices and Automated Install was not mentioned. Every competent System Administrator needs that training. For these advanced topics, the typical reader will have to spend a lot of time searching the Internet for bits and pieces of help. In the next revision of Solaris 11, I recommend those topics be included in step-by-step commands. For what I need, I compiled my own step-by-step document to be my primary instruction guide and will use the book for performance monitoring commands and maybe network filing system setups. This author's previous Solaris 8, 9, and 10 Administration Guides were much better at covering these topics.

Much of what is included in this book can be found at the publicly available docs for Solaris from Oracle. There are some tips that Oracle's Solaris documentation do not cover. It is up to the reader to determine whether or not those tips are worth the cost of this book.

Initially I buy this book for about 100 pages of ZFS of Solaris 11.1. And I love the NFS chapter because it covers both ways of NFS shares in Solaris 11 GA and in Solaris 11.1. Then, I go though a whole book and figure out that this is the best book I can get for Solaris 11.1 system admin.I buy one copy for each member in the project team. My colleagues love it also.Strongly recommended! Hope the "advanced one" by the same author will publish soon.

Great reference book!

Overall a good book. The only issue I saw was in the ACLs section. For Solaris 11 it should have been the chmod commands and not setfacl sincethe file system is ZFS and uses NFSv4 styled ACLs.

Didn't apply much to my specific tasks.

My 12 year-old loves to bake so I purchased her two baking cookbooks (for teens) for Christmas gifts. The other book I bought has a big, beautiful photo in bold technicolor on each page, showing every finished recipe item. This recipe book has 200 pages and does not include photos of the foods :o( For those a bit new to the kitchen (most teens), I feel photos are extremely helpful and make for a more achievable end result. The description of this book showed colorful pages but in reality, there are a few photos at the very beginning of cooking utensils/pans and only @ 6 photos of the food items (bad, bland photos at that). There are a few cartoon drawings as well (how to mix, etc). The book is disappointing, especially for the price. It reminds me of a cookbook I had as a teen - in 1977.

My 13 year old loved doing through the recipes. They are a bit advanced but not too much to where they're daunting to try.

I was shopping for a baking book written for teens, not childish but not too intense either. This book is perfect! Great selection of things teens want to bake, easy to understand and an explanation of baking terms & products the teen will need to understand.

Bought as a gift.

👍👍

I am writing this review for my thirteen year old daughter. She received a complimentary copy from Callisto publishing company. The cookbook had easy to follow instructions and most of the ingredients are ones you have at home. I have tried almost half the recipes in the book and so far my favourites include strawberry shortcake in a jar, giant soft pretzels, and mashed potatoe beef casserole. The only thing I would change about the cookbook is to include more finished recipe pictures.

I thought that this would be perfect for my grand daughter who started college this year. Although she is not new to cooking/baking, I figured there might be some things in here to help her when she doesn't have her mom or myself to reach. It has a good variety of recipes that I am certain those are learning how to bake would enjoy. It is filled with excellent knowledge that those are learning how to bake should have, from the basics of baking to techniques and skills. Terminology is covered along with how ingredients affect the recipes.I received this from the publisher to review. This is a great book to start out anyone who wants to learn to bake.

I feel cooking and baking are important life skills that are dying off. Many people say they don’t like to cook or bake but on some cases it may be because they don’t know how to.This book includes basic baking information for novice bakers. The recipes are easy to follow and consist of ingredients that are easy to fond in your local grocery store.Even though it is titled Baking for Teens it would be a great resource for any age wanting to learn how to bake.I received a free copy from the publisher.
