Who's on First? (Pop Classics), by Bud Abbott John Martz

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-Abbott and Costello's beloved comedy routine receives a picture-book treatment, complete with comical illustrations. A tall brown bear plays the coach (Abbott), a chubby white bunny plays the catcher (Costello), and they go back and forth about the oddly named members of their baseball team. "Who's on first. What's on second. I Don't Know's on third." Martz's expressive characters cavort on backgrounds that pop with appealing color. Clever page formatting conveys the pacing that is such an integral part of the laughs. At bottom, though, "Who's on First?" is about auditory humor, so the translation to a visual medium, while it may illuminate the jokes for kids, can't quite capture the magic of the original. Historical notes about the comedians and their routine appear at the end of the book.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MDα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

This famously hilarious Abbott and Costello routine will have adults laughing even before their kids get into the swing. When a new catcher, a white rabbit, is hired for the baseball team, he asks the coach, a brown bear, the names of the other players. So comes the classic response: “Who’s on first. What’s on second. I Don’t Know’s on third.” Confusion reigns as the banter between coach and catcher gets sillier and sillier with each new question and answer. The supercute cartoon illustrations, arranged in both panels and strips against solid backgrounds, only intensify the zaniness. The extended joke could just as easily have been accomplished in 32 pages instead of 40, but, nevertheless, this version easily bats a triple. The idea of turning a comedy sketch into a picture book is a fine one, and one wonders what imitators might be next. Grades K-3. --Cummins, Julie

This picture book is appealing for all ages and would make a perfect Father's Day gift. Even if Father's Day has passed when you read this, John Martz's illustrated Who's on First would make a nice complement to attending a summer baseball game, perhaps especially with Grandpa. My kids and I watched one of Abbott & Costello's original 1930s performances, then we read this book together. In fact, the visual aids ("Who" is a worm, "What" is a dog, "I Don't Know" is a chicken, etc.) will help kids "get" the hilariousness, even while Costello (here a white rabbit) continues to be perplexed. Of course this is a shortened version of the full skit. The endpapers are boring but at least consistent with the solid pastel backgrounds throughout the book. Also would have liked a colophon more substantial than "Printed in China."

I enjoy word play, and this routine has always made me laugh. My kids (ages 5, 7, and 9) all love having me read this out loud to them, and it brought me great joy when I heard them reciting it to each other in the car one day. It's also a great read-aloud book to young classes as it introduces kids to the importance of language and how one should never really get to comfortable with always using words in the same way.

Great Book!!! We bought this as a gift for a friend who has three young grandsons. He was so thankful for the gift and his grandsons read it over and over again. One grandson had a class assignment to read aloud a book in the classroom and he chose this book because he wanted the other kids to laugh. It worked!!! Quite a classic of it's time and it was nice to know that it was enjoyed so much by the younger children who never heard of Abbott & Costello.

This book is hilarious to my grandchildren, ages 7,9, and 11! They had never heard the original recording, so after finishing it, I played it for them. They totally cracked up. Great pictures, and after I read it to them, they looked through it for a long time, reading it again to each other. Perfect book

A fun children's version of the classic Abbot and Costello routine. An instant family favorite, I love to read it and my children think it is hilarious (especially my 3 year old). I love the illustrations, the animals are a fun twist on the routine. Our personal favorite is the owl who plays shortstop.

I bought a few copies of this book for nieces & nephews to read together at a family reunion. They had a good time playing the parts. It is condensed a little bit from the full sketch, leaving out the part with "When you pay the players, Who gets the money?" "Right, every dollar of it. Sometimes his wife picks it up" "Who's wife?" "Yes."There may be some other omissions I didn't catch, but if you want a book that little kids will like to read aloud, buy this. Better yet, buy a pair.

Very funny book and very well done. My kids don't like baseball and they still think this book is super funny. The illustrations are very engaging. Also, similar to the Elephant and Piggy books by Mo Willems, the book gets kids wanting to perform the parts, so it is good for early readers.

This is a fun book when you want to share the "Who's on First" story with a baseball fan!
