But we are eager to work with (rather than just for) our churches and stakeholders, learn from other denominations and organisations, include postgraduate research students and emerging scholars, and ensure our research leads to real and lasting change rather than just a report and maybe a publication. Talking about God in Practice and its Theological Action Research (TAR) offers a process and model that are ready to adapt for the practitioners and budding researchers among us.Written collaboratively by the ecumenical and interdisciplinary Action Research Church and Society (ARCS) project team, they want to show the relevance of Christian tradition to experience and help people talk about God in practice, in a culture which has moved God-talk to the margins. The two major frameworks they draw on are practical theology and its interest in bridging experience and tradition with theological reflection and interdisciplinary studies; and action research that addresses real-life problems with researchers working collaboratively with participants to develop new action plans.The fresh methodology of TAR is a collaborative and conversational approach for helping churches and agencies sharpen and fulfill their mission. In definition:“Theological Action Research is a partnership between a insider and an outsider team to undertake research and conversations answering theological questions about faithful practice in order to renew both theology and practice in the service of God’s mission.” (63)It is a partnership between an “insider” team who are reflecting on their own context and experience, and an “outsider” team. So rather than an individual producing theological ideas, TAR invites practitioners and academics to be curious and identify and ask questions, and to work with qualitative researchers to sharpen the research questions(s) and methodology. The TAR methodology uses an action-reflection cycle, starting with experience, reflecting on it with teams of practitioners and reflectors, identifying learnings, and leading to renewed action and theology. Part of its beauty is that it presupposes a change outcome.Another value is that theological reflection does not just happen as a last step after analysis as “the icing on the cake already baked in the oven of social analysis” (51), but throughout the process. A fresh model for framing this is the understanding of “theology in four voices” which researchers and participants use to label different theological perspectives:• Normative theology (Scripture and tradition)• Formal theology (of academic theologians)• Espoused theology (embedded in a group’s articulated beliefs)• Operant theology (embedded in a group’s actual practices)TAR helps participants understand and converse with these different theologies in order to transform practice; it is a “practical theology pedagogy” designed to renew the operant level of what groups do.The ARCS team has developed a process including a set-up questionnaire for the insider team to articulate their theology and what influences them and what they want to find out. This would be a helpful resource for any congregation seeking help with revitalisation, or for consultants to use with other agencies. There are suggestions for a warm-up meeting, steps for designing the research and action plan, data collection and analysis, and writing feedback documents for teams to discuss. Feedback documents are a way that TAR helps teams clarify or refine findings and invite buy-in on change.Three chapters discuss case studies of TAR applied in parish, denomination, and agency settings. It is inspiring to see how well-designed research and simply asking curious questions can help a group with self-awareness and fresh impetus for growth.This practical field guide to a fresh and developing process and model for theological research will be useful for practitioners, consultants, and organisations wanting to foster mutual learning and looking for research-based recommendations for planning and action. About the Author

Dr. William L. Leffler, a retired executive from Royal Dutch/Shell, spent 36 years with that company. During his career he spent time in refining and marketing, petrochemicals, and corporate planning in the United States, and in exploration and production in London. He earned his MBA and PHD at New York University, and a BS at MIT. He has authored multiple PennWell titles including the bestselling Petroleum Refining in Nontechnical Language, 4th Edition (2008), Petrochemicals in Nontechnical Language, 4th Edition (2010), and Deepwater Petroleum Exploration & Production: A Nontechnical Guide, 2nd Edition (2011). Martin S. Raymond, a veteran of more than 40 years in exploration and production, was senior vice-president - E&P for J.M. Huber Corporation. During his career he also held engineering, administrative, and management positions with Shell Oil and Forest Oil. He earned a BA degree from Princeton in geology and a masters degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Currently, Raymond consults in the area of operating process management for E & P companies.

This is good book to read through if you are ignorant of the business. After you read this, get Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology,... by NormanHyne, this book is a good reference with more detail.

I have been selling in the oilfield for 30 years and am learning new things with each chapter of this book that will help me not only understand the use of my products better, but the overall industry better. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good overview of the oil and gas industry from how the oil and gas is formed to how it is pulled out of the ground and produced.

Explains O&G production in simple, understandable terms. Critical reading for anyone working with the oil & gas industry in a support role. Begins with a history of exploration and production, and moves on to basic geology (actually inportant to understanding the O&G indutsry) and to some light chemistry, and finally production processes. Great book.

This is definitely a must have for anyone who wants to know how oil reservoirs are discovered, processed, and sent into production. There's also a great opening chapter on the evolution of oil drilling, stating the very beginnings of the idea.One thing that struck me as odd as I read through the book was the fact that key words in the chapters weren't defined properly enough to give the reader a full understanding of its meaning. I simply didn't expect this in a book that declares itself 'in Nontechnical Language'. The quick example I can think of is in the first chapter when they introduce the notion "perforating the casing," I had two separate ideas about what this could mean.These downfalls are rare, so it's easy to ignore them and enjoy the book for what it really is: a great compilation of information about oil production.

The authors provide an effective balance of breadth, background, and detail, giving the reader a general understanding the business of finding and extracting hydrocarbons. Ideal for anyone who works in a non-production capacity in the business. This book has already helped me make better sense of my role, purpose, and priorities in supporting an oil and gas production company.

This book offers a wide variety of subjects covered against a framework that is indeed non technical but highly educative.For someone wanting to come up to speed on the industry I would recommend it. Good work to the authors.

A must-read for anyone interested in American History. A well-researched, well-written, high readable work. When Brock learned that that Harriet Beecher Stowe based Uncle Tom’s cabin on the real experiences of a real person, he researched. And researched. And researched. What he delivers is a well-written history of slavery and its role in our Civil War. In telling Josiah’s story, he expertly weaves in the history of slavery in the US and around the world. By simply telling an honest story, Brock also debunks myths without fanfare or histrionics: the story of slavery is not one sided. Many Southerners resisted it. Many Northeners aided it. Some blacks owned slaves. Some blacks assisted on the Freedom Road. Josiah’s story is extraordinary because he also gained influence with American Presidents and British Monarchs. I noted a reference to Andrew Jackson who has been vilified in 2017-2018: Brock found that Jackson hated slavery and bought a total of 2 - at their pleading because he was known as a fair, compassionate man. He trained them with employable skills and set them free within 2 years. Brock tell Josiah’s story by sticking to facts. Brock ends The Road To Dawn by addressing the issue of slavery today. A must read.

The Road to Dawn provides important information about the dynamics of the master-slave relationship as well as the harms of slavery to both. It also delineates the many obstacles to recovery from those harms and to reconciliation between the abuser and the abused. The damage of slavery and racial chauvinism may be emotionally difficult to absorb but shed useful light on the still-long road to recovery from the social disease of racism.

Loved this book. I would have never known about the book, but have a friend who is a descendant of Mr. Henson. Love American history and this book shares about the life of Josiah and his struggles. He was a man who loved God and followed His commandments. This is a book and story that all should read.

Wow.... A book that all should read. A graphic reminder of how horrible slavery was. Everybody needs to read this book.

The Road to Dawn tells the story of Josiah Henson, on whose life was based the story of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book gave me a new appreciation of the horrors of slavery. Josiah Henson was truly a remarkable man whose life has brought much inspiration to my own. It was a terrific read. I highly recommend it.

So clearly written, a well told true story with facts and heart intertwined! We must all continue to learn and not repeat past mistakes, ourselves or our families. This was an intriguing read, I am recommending for all our family to read it and will buy more hard copies! Worth every minute!

This is a well done book on the life of Josiah Henson...one that will hold your attention for the most part. Americans should read more of this kind of story to remember our great sin in slavery. It helps to “walk” in the other shoes a bit to hopefully understand better. In that, maybe we can hope for full reconciliation and understanding on all sides.

I don't recall ever hearing the name Josiah Henson before reading this book. This account is well written and researched and he was truly a fascinating man. It's also encouraging to see how he kept his faith through those dark years. I will now have to read Uncle Tom's Cabin to tie the stories together.

Eric Owen Moss, FAIA, was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Los Angeles. He holds Masters Degrees in Architecture from both the University of California at Berkeley, College of Environmental Design and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He has held teaching positions at major universities around the world including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. Moss has been a longtime professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), and served as its director from 2002-2015. Eric Owen Moss Architects was founded in 1973. The office, located in Culver City, is staffed with twenty-five professionals designing and constructing projects in the United States and around the world.
