I love this book! The author shares her experience, shares to do ideas to incorporate God in daily activities with your grandchildren, gives a prayer with each chapter and pertinent scriptures to ponder. Got one for myself who is a new Grammy and one for my sister who has teens and grown grandchildren. They never outgrow their needs for a grandmother's prayer!

I appreciate the thought and heart behind each entry. The message of each of them is framed in short, easy messages. I appreciate that I am not bogged down with a lot of content that is usually placed in a devotional book. What I mean by this is that she gets to the point each day and it is easy to remember and ponder the point through the day.

My Aunt Joy gave this to me for my birthday. We began a Grandma's Prayer Group. I bought many of the books she recommends each day as a resource for our Grand's Library. The Grands are memorizing the scripture verses she suggested and reading the books to earn stickers for prizes. It will change how you pray for your Grands and be motivated to encourage them to read good books along with the Bible.

I received this from a 'seasoned' grandmother when I became a first time grandmother last year. It's a wonderfully written inspirational book that helps to brings structure, focus and purpose to our prayers no matter what age our grandchildren are. I have found that it is also a personal devotional book that challenges & exhorts us to live out our faith authentically. I'm on my second time around and there will be many more.

I am a grandmother of three girls (19, 16 and 10). Sometimes I can hardly believe that they are almost grown. I am fortunate to live close to them and love to spend time with the girls. I love Kay's book because it really focuses day by day on things to not only pray but actually do. What better gift could a grandma give to her grandchildren then daily prayer. This is a much beeded resource for all grandmas who care about the souls of their grandchildren.

I'm really enjoying this book! I'm somewhat new in my spiritual walk and I love how the stories are so relative to our day to day challenges and the author does such a great job of framing everything up in away that is so relatable and heart warming. The prayers are so moving and an accurate reflection of what I think and feel! Its also thought provoking with insightful ideas and activities to broaden your spiritual, intellectual and emotional horizons and most important to develop a loving relationship with your grandchildren!

What a well-written, well thought-out book that anyone could use as a devotional and a guide to pray for the next generation, whether they be grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or those that you long to see following after Christ. This is a powerful book that you'll use over and over again. I've purchased multiple copies to give away to sisters-in-law and friends so that they can be encouraged in praying for their families. It's definitely a must-have.

I love Kay's talent to put words on her pages. When I read Kay's work, it is like a mini therapy session for myself.I see the difference in my grand children's lives without me saying a word to them. My Heavenly Father does the work in them as I offer up the actions that Kay suggests in her devotional. All I have to express to them is my love. May God bless her with many more inspirations!

True Legend,by Mike Lupica is about Drew Robinson. Drew is a really good basketball player, he's a junior at Oakton Academy. He is the top recruit for high school basketball. Drew likes to shoot around at this place called Morrieson Park and there he meets a washed-up playground legend from Sacramento, Urban Shellings. He was previously thought to be dead from a fire but it was his brother who really died and they assumed that he was the one who died. He didn't confront the police because he wanted to just get away from his past, his ruined brilliant career. Now Drew faces a similar situation and he doesn't want to end up like Urban.

My 7 year old loves this book. He's an intermediate reader who enjoys reading 3rd-4th grade level books. This one was perfect for him. It's an inspirational story about how to overcome fear and self-doubt. HIghly recommend.

Drew Robinson is ranked number 1 in the country at basketball. Throughout the book he shows the challenges, and the perks of this. They combine this with a good best friend, a ghost like old basketball legend, and a girl that he has a crush on. This is the best basketball book I have ever read and I recommend to anyone who is a basketball fan. It's another best seller by Mike Lupica. A slam dunk by far.

Good read for youth. My 13 year old grandson loves basketball and this book tells a good story as well as important lessons in life to be learned'. His comment was, " that was a really good book"! He loved it and read it quickly!

Bought for my 12 yr old grandson and he just finished reading it. Is now doing book report and said it's a great book about a boy who's really good at basketball and it kind of goes to his head. How he gets back on track makes up the action in this story.

High School aged son read this ...loved it

A startling account of greed and avarice and the sociopathic thinking of people who put other's financial lives in ruin.A non-stop read written with detail and excitement. If one is a novice investor this is a must read. For those of you who are sophisticated in the ways of the financial world, this book will not be a surprise, although still unsettling .

I was one of those investors who invested in limited partnerships in the early 1980s. In 1981 I invested $3,000 in Consolidated Capital...a limited partnership which was supposed to buy a bunch of apartments, then sell them off in 7 years. In 1983, I invested $2500 in Petro-Lewis.......a limited partnership which was supposed to buy producing oil wells........then sell them again in 7 years.Back then I was in my mid twenties. I attended an adult ed class on investing taught by the local Edward Jones broker. He pushed these two partnerships on his customers. I researched both of these deals. I found they had good 10 year track records and I decided to invest for the good returns and tax breaks.What I did not understand when I invested in these two deals was that they were based upon two assumptions. The two assumptions were continued high oil prices and a continuation of the tax breaks for limited partnerships. I also did not understand that if the deals started to go bad, you literally could not sell your investment to anyone else. I also did not understand that the Edward Jones broker got about a 8% commission on my investment.Just as in Eichenwald's book, both partnerships started out fine and paid the promised dividends. But soon both of them stopped paying dividends. At one point, Petro-Lewis converted from a limited partnership to a stock trading on the American Exchange. Against my Edward Jone's advice, I sold the stock immediately.Eventually, a secondary market developed for selling limited partnerships. I sold the Consolidated Capital investment to someone in the secondary market. My compounded annual return on the Consolidated Capital was -8.17% and -16.24% on the Petro-Lewis.I knew that Congress passed tax laws that made the tax write-offs possible. Until I read Eichenwald's book, I did not realize there were really two triggering events that set off the boom in limited partnerships. The first was Reagan's Economic Recovery Tax Act that reduced the depreciation period from 25 to 15 years. This made limited partnerships more favorable. The second trigger was Regulation D which reduced the restrictions on selling limited partnerships to the general public.The 1986 Tax Reform Act, plus a drop in oil prices...........killed the value of limited partnerships.I did not realize the Prudential Insurance Company got swept up in the limited partnership debacle until I read Eichenwald's book. He outlines in escruciating detail how the general partners abused investors by their actions.As an investor in limited partnerships, I found Eichenwald's book to be an interesting read. But at 436 pages, I found the book contained more details than I cared to read.The limited partnership bubble had a lot of similarities to the S&L bubble and the 2008 Sub-Prime bubble. All of these bubbles were first created by acts of Congress. They collapsed when the bubble had run its course, and the regulators never kept pace during the bubbles.I am not aware of a shorter book that covers the limited partnership fiasco. If you are interested in financial fiascos, this book is a good read. Just remember there are probably more details covered than you will be interested in.

It is a book that takes you behind the curtains of "investments" for one's retirement. I am not a big specialist on investment etc. and yet Kurt Eichenwald managed to keep me hooked on this book. I would love to believe these swindles can't happen again, but when you don't administer an exemplary punishment to the fat cats who swollowed the retirement money of the small citizens you know they will invent new mechanisms and new products to get even fatter.

As a beneficiary of a Prudential Annuity that was devested from Verizon, I was interested in learning about Prudential's history. Basically the book shows how different the truth is from the corporate brand that is presented to the media. Hopefully, the events of the past have been remediated by the present Prudential management and the corporate ethics have been improved. The book documents the effects of corporate incompetent and dishonest executive management.The book also serves as an example of where the current climate of deregulation of securities firms should be reconsidered.

The average citizen has no idea of the corruption and fraud that occurred during this time. Once learning of this, the reader is astonished that punishment was so light...even, some of these crooks avoided punishment completely! Frankly, I doubt that a lesson was learned from this; yet, there may be a few grains of hope.

I finally got around to reading "Serpent on the Rock" years after having read "Conspiracy of Fools" and "The Informant." Given the passage of time since I read Mr. Eichenwald's later books, it's possible that I don't remember them as well as some of the other reviewers. However, "Serpent on the Rock" strikes me as equal to "Conspiracy of Fools" and quite possibly better than "The Informant" - though the latter is really a different sort of book and isn't entirely comparable.At any rate, for me "Serpent on the Rock" cements Mr. Eichenwald's status as the pre-eminent author of the "Companies Gone Wild" genre; his books are immensely readable, well organized, abundantly footnoted and well indexed (a rare occurrence these days). Moreover, if being a great non-fiction writer is dependent upon picking the right story, he's a genius; even though I know the book is factual, I found myself saying over and over again that if this had been a novel it would have been criticized as being too far out and/or lacking in credibility.For anyone interested in books about business, this is an absolute must-read. As one of the other reviewers said, it should also be required reading for anyone seeking an MBA or a law degree (as should "Conspiracy of Fools").I met Mr. Eichenwald about a year ago or so and asked him if he had given up writing books. He told me that he was writing one, but that it was not about a business debacle but instead was about the government. His new book, "500 Days," is due out next month, and I can't wait to read it. I'm disappointed that he's not writing the definitive book about the ongoing financial crisis (though "Too Good to Fail" and "The Sellout" are pretty much classics of that tale), but if he's as good in his new area as he is in this one, it's going to be fabulous.

Corporate greed, egos, lack of integrity, and stupidity lay out the downfall of Prudential. How so many were able to get away with so much for so long is a tale that’s hard to believe.

All children are different, and we live in very different times than when I was growing up. That being said, I would not have given this book to my daughter as a preteen. She would not have been ready for it then. That does not mean that all girls would not be. I strongly suggest that parents read this before handing it over. You know your child best and can gauge when/if they will benefit from this book. My daughter is fifteen, and I had no problem handing it over once I finished. I admit I am a bit of a prude, and there were sections in the book that made me cringe. I see them though as an opportunity for discussion at the appropriate age. This book is worth purchasing even if it has to sit on your shelf for a little while until the time is right.The author did a wonderful job of picking relevant topics and covering them with reason and genuineness. Her heart is evident on each page, and, though it does read somewhat sciency, I presume the heart of a neuroscientist might be somewhat sciency. The author is a mother, but her voice in the book is more of a mentor, a mentor who wants the very best for the reader. She shares both science and personal experience. I appreciate the intelligence of this book and how it is woven with candor and sincerity. I'm very glad I bought it and read it, and I look forward to discussing it with my daughter when she finishes it.

Beautifully written, incredibly empowering, a must read for every girl, young and old!I enjoyed it and can't wait to give it to my pre-teen!This book tackles some "big" things every young woman faces and it presents them all with such a sense of building up and strengthening.The intelligence and passion for women of the author is apparent on every page.Highly recommended!

Where was this book when I was growing up!?!?

A very good read for young ladies. It has lessons on biology, self-esteem and psychology. It is very educational, but in a fun way. If you are a girl who doesn't think of themselves as pretty or worthy, you need this book. It will change your world.

This book is informative and I like the tone, but it makes some cultural and moral assumptions that many religious (and other) parents won't agree with, so be sure to read it before sharing it with kids, so you can discuss it as appropriate.

The one-star review is not for the content but the physical book quality. In truth, I didn't even read the book once I opened it and saw the text varying between dark and light, too light to read, and text boxes with borders running off the page (see pictures). it looks like someone ran the original book through a bad scanner and then printed it on a printer that was running out of toner. The publisher/copyright page says "Philomel Books An imprint of Penguin Random House LLC"' I don't know if that is the problem, the "imprint" company. However, I cannot give this as a gift, it is such poor quality. I'm returning it and will try to find a copy with normal looking text.

Mayim Bialik does a fantastic job of explaining puberty to young teen girls! I bought this for my friend’s daughter. He’s a single dad, so this book really did a good job of explaining Boys & drama.

My kiddos love these series! They are 8 yr old girl and 3 yr old boy. These keep them quiet and interested in the car. The only thing I dislike it the use of some of the wording... like stupid and idiot between the brothers and sisters in the stories or the ax murderer who was going to put them all in baggies and put them in the freezer. I could have done without all of that but all the good still out weighs the bad. These send a great message and I really enjoy them as well!

I have 3kids age 8,6,4 and feel that the content matter is too mature. One story is about a 12 year old with a crush on her camp counselor. During the road trip the kids are taking there is a lot of fighting and use of the word stupid. I don't really like these behaviors being modeled to my kids. They do enough fighting on their own without having to listen to it on a CD :)

This was an absolute life saver our last family vacation, and it was enjoyed by the whole family! My 3 and 6 year old boys loved listening to the stories, as well as my husband, a long time fan of Adventures in Odyssey and audio books as a whole. Each cd has a new adventure, which I really enjoyed. I love how this one has 6 hours of stories, instead of 2 like several other sets have. This was our first purchase of adventure in odyssey cds, although we have listened to them on the radio before now. I see adding more stories into our collection in the future! Thank you for putting together a road trip collection!

The first CD made me nervous as the kids model really bad attitudes starting each story (and eventually reform), but the rest of the discs were the fun adventures I was hoping for. My boys love these!

My kids have listened to this over, and over, and over in our car. It's been great for them to have challenging and character building stories. I'd buy all of the Adventures in Odyssey CD's if they were more affordable! This is definitely something I will continue to add to their "shared collection".

One of the best Odyssey series we own! We surprised the kids with this on a recent road trip and it was a HIT!

This was a gift for my grandson. He cannot get enough of these stories. This particular set of cd's have played non stop since he received them. The ordering experience was easy. Delivery was prompt, items undamaged.

OMG, I didn't realize how much I would enjoy these. I bought this for my boys to listen to on vacation. I didn't realize just how well done these are. The stories are fun for ye kids and there is enough stuff in these that only adults could appreciate. The serindipity is that they have a good moral to the story.

Not much information per park, and nothing that can not be found in more comprehensive data on the web or google. I purchased it to put in the RV for reference but sent it back after taking a look. I have been to over 70 National parks and monuments, and the information is spotty at best. Plus it will get outdated quickly. A digital format would eventually be better, with web links. Guess paper products are going the way of the dinosaur! Also, be careful because restocking fees on these products are getting ridiculous. I probably will not order anything like this from Amazon in the future. Got really burned on the Good Sam Guide when I sent it back. 40% restocking fee!

I thought that it would be more in depth. Further research for specific national Parks will be necessary. It is a generalization of what is available.

The maps were not correct and did not match the text. It was not worth it, there is more information on the internet for free and the size of the book could be smaller for convenience.

Appreciated the detail about each national park with info on which campsites take reservations and which ones not. It made it so much easier and not waste time on those which do not take reservations.

Seems pretty good. Covers the national parks and has a good amount of information.

Great for trip planning. Not fancy. No color pictures. JUST good information. Able to see what's close to your planned route. Then go to the parks website and get more detail.

WAS SUPERMAN A SPY? is chock-full of information and dirty little secrets about comic book companies' pasts. The big two (DC and Marvel) are tackled, as well as other current and no-longer-existent independent comic book companies. The author, Brian Cronin, seemingly did a lot of research to uncover mysteries and validate (or disprove) urban legends. There was also quite a bit of information about subjects and situations that I never even thought about, but I'm glad I know now why they are like they are.Although I really enjoyed the book, I think it could have been presented better, and I'm not sure why the author (or his editor(s)) didn't consider it. The title of the book grabs you: Was Superman A Spy? Well, was he? The book is divided into the following sections: DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Other Comic Book Companies. Within each of these sections, there are chapters for each super-hero or team (i.e., Superman, Batman, X-Men, Hulk). The chapter then tells you all of the "little secrets" about that hero in separated paragraphs. What happened to the questions to be answered? Cronin should have presented the questions (i.e., Was Superman a spy?, Why did Captain America's shield change after one issue? Who really created Batman?) and then answered them for the reader, not just present an essay on each superhero and then spill any and all related facts about that superhero. I think it would have made for a much more interesting and grabbing read if you knew what fact was coming up next. As it stands, I'm not sure what theory or story he's proving or disproving until at least halfway through the paragraphs. Don't get me wrong; it's still interesting, but it could have been presented to the reader SO much better.Lastly, Cronin should have stuck to discussing only events/situations in the past, or the text needs to be periodically updated. The current or upcoming events he references are no longer current and in the past (i.e., there's talk of a new Spider-Man movie (which was already filmed and released in 2012)). It makes the book feel very dated.All in all, though, I recommend this book for the longtime comic book reader who would love all these juicy details that bring to light circumstances and situations you never even knew you wanted to know about.

Brian's book deals with some of the greatest myths you've ever heard about comic books--and a ton of them you probably have never heard before. Brian's work on "Comics Should Be Good" online has given us a taste of some of these weird stories (Wolverine was supposed to be an actual animal...and his claws were actually just supposed to be a part of his gloves) and great behind-the-scenes information.If you're a serious comic book fan, you'll find so many wonderful surprises and "I never knew that!" moments in here. If you're just a casual comic book reader, you'll still find things of interest here as well (though many of the more detailed surprises may not mean as much to you since you don't know the characters). Brian did a great job here and the book is nicely laid out. Be prepared to go through this one in one sitting.

it's ok, not what i was really expecting as far as comic book informationit's still an OK read

This book examines "more than 130" legends about comic book culture. Most of these stories deal with some of the stranger occurances in the comic book industry. The book heavily leans toward DC and Marvel, with much less written about other comic book companies, but that's understandable. I knew a lot of the stories in here beforehand, but there were also a lot that I hadn't heard before. A very enjoyable look at the quirkier side of the comic book industry.

Brian Cronin's book, "Was Superman a Spy," purports to be an overview of urban legends and myths throughout the comics industry, with the intent to confirm or debunk them. Instead, it's an overview of the history of superhero comics, with the majority of its attention given to the Big Two, Marvel and DC.That doesn't make it bad. Many chapters are thorough, and have enough new and interesting facts and factoids that keep the reader interested. However, certain problems arise from either a writing or an editing perspective, or possibly both.First of all, Cronin includes chapters on "DC Comics Miscellanea," "Marvel Comics Miscellanea," and "Various Comic Book Companies." While the information contained in these chapters is interesting, there seems to be little or no attempt at organization. While I understand that these chapters are intended to focus on miscellanea, there are no subheadings to sections, simply a lurch from topic to topic, seemingly at random. The chapter entitled "Various Comic Book Companies," in particular, has elements regarding a lot of the litigation between companies and could have been an interesting and focused discussion about intellectual property while maintaining the interest level. Instead, it just...lurches.Second, the tonal shifts are disconcerting. The overviews of DC and Marvel, as well as the chapters on major characters, tend to be interesting and entertaining, with a touch of the scholar about them. Other chapters seem slapdash, written from a highly opinionated perspective that jars with the rest of the book. In addition, Cronin loves exclamation marks the way metal bands love umlauts. It's kind of sloppy.Finally, Cronin seems preoccupied with Hollywood and film versions of characters. Sometimes the discussion is interesting (The Incredible Hulk), other times it seems pointless (does anyone care that Jonathan Frakes was once paid to dress up as Captain America for a Comic Convention?).I think that, to a degree, Cronin suffered from an inattentive editor.I somehow get the impression that this was rushed to meet a printing deadline, since parts of the book seem so unpolished. However, it's still worth reading. The content and information provided gets 5 stars from me. The slapdash nature of many of the chapters and the tonal shifts/writing style get about 2.5 stars.My advice is to pick up Scott Tipton and Chris Ryall's Comic Books 101: The History, Methods and Madness first, for a better overview of the history of the industry. If you're still interested, come on back and read Cronin's book. It's decent.

By the time I finished book one, I knew I was going to be obsessed with this series and I was right! Into the Fire picked up during an exciting event promised in book one, bringing in a new amazing setting and introducing more great characters. I carried my Kindle with me constantly because I couldn't stop reading! Like the first book (and even more, really), Into the Fire gives you ALL THE FEELS from excitement, fear, intrigue, laughter, and some wonderfully swoony-stuff. I'm so excited for the next book to come out!

Once again, I just adored the characters. I love their evolutions and interactions and how different they all are. I love that the characters work together - that it isn't one young girl with undiscovered magic who saves them all (though I do enjoy some of those too...). I love this author's writing and hope to see another in this series!

This is the second book I've read by this author, being the sequel to Out of the Shadows - a steampunk fantasy set in a dystopian future. I liked the first book, and I liked this one even better. Quicker to get going, I felt its pace was faster and the story jogged along a great deal quicker than the first, which was good. My only tiny criticism of the first book was it lagged in places and was a little wordy, but in book two the author seems to have found a pace that suits both her and the tale she's trying to tell.The story is engaging and interesting, with some lovely world building and good imagery throughout. The characters are well rounded and believable, with the heroine Leonore being the same klutzy reckless girl she was in the first book, dashing through life making questionable life choices and generally falling headfirst into awkward situations, but is so endearing the reader forgives her these traits.I was pleased to learn more of Rooke, the anti-hero, in this book, but not so pleased at the turn the plot took, actually expressing my disapproval out loud, and I'm hoping in future books the author takes the story in the direction I really, really wanted it to take. What can I say? I'm a sucker for the bad boys, and am always rooting for them to come out on top. But no spoilers.Intimacy was introduced in this book, and for a brief moment I wondered if it was going to stray from the realms of YA and into NA, but the author handled the scene with tact and discretion, keeping her novel well within the bounds of decency. And I guess that is the overall tone of the book - nicely handled, in that the author deftly and expertly weaves a tale that in the wrong hands could have been overlong and stodgy. However, she avoids all the traps a less experienced author would have fallen into and instead presents a well crafted, engaging and tightly woven story.I must admit to being a little bored with the myriad of dystopian YA books that abound at the moment but found Into the Fire to be a refreshing change. Whilst the world the author has created has its flaws, and there is much to condemn in its society, still, it is not a broken world. Instead, it is a world that needs attention, the inequalities it contains addressing, and Leonore and her friends are attempting to do just that, but slowly and steadily. This is no Hunger Games scenario, and Leonore is certainly no kick-ass heroine changing a shattered future one fight at a time, and it is perhaps all the more believable because of that very lack of epic battle scenes or evil overlord to overthrow.Overall, an enjoyable and engrossing read from a very talented author.

Lahore is a grad student who works for Neal at Springhaven Museum in the Archnotecnolgy Program. Neal and his wife Mina are her foster parents. Neal and Lanore are on an expedition to Bone Port when many complications ensue.Excellent characterization and plotting.

This was an intriguing story that brought to light how often we are so comfortable in our lives we are blinded to the reality around us. Wrapped through two contrasting towns and loves, Lenore is shows what she loves vs what is comfortable. It was a page turner that ended to soon for me!

I read the first part of this series (Out of the Shadows) last year and I was more than happy to immerse myself in this steampunk fantasy world again.This time the action first moves to Bone Port, where Lenore and the rest of the Springhaven Museum mount an expedition for knowledge that uncovers things that maybe should have been left buried.I really love the new Victorian era the author has created. The setting is rich and easily imagined. Fraedrich is a master at dialogue - nothing seems forced here. In fact, the whole land of Invarnis is solid and substantial. There is no vague world building and reader confusion.And let's get to the characters, a whole host of them, with strong back stories and depth. Lenore is our protagonist and I love the way her character grew in this one, as she struggles with her past, and tries to make the right decisions for her future (although at one point I was yelling STOP!)The author blends fantasy and history and steampunk technology in a book what will sweep you up and deposit you into its pages.An honourable mention here for Rook - crime lord extraordinaire, and easily one of my favourites.If you're looking for something fresh and different add this to your list now!

I am currently buying books to augment my son's first grade history and I LOVE this one. It is factual without being overly graphic and depicts her whole life, thus giving scope of all Helen Keller overcame. I am looking forward to introducing him to Braille and sign language as mention in the biography. Excellent depiction of an amazing woman and the people who helped her.

Helen Keller's story inspired me as a young girl. I am so glad I can now share this story with my son. My son is in fourth grade, but if your child reads very well this book could definitely be read by younger readers. This story is also a great way to teach children about accepting others, as well as overcoming the various limitations that life puts on us.

This book series is perfect for my students! I especially like the fact that there are quite a few interesting, educational options in this series, and not just narrative options.

After watching a cartoon on Helen Keller, my daughter (2nd grade) was intrigued by the story of Helen Keller. So I purchased this book for her. She finished it in a matter of minutes, but she did enjoy the read and pictures. Great starter book.

A mind-blowing book that shows how to combine the beauty and orderliness of Domain-Driven Design (Eric Evans) with the purity and reasonability of functional programming and with the need for making your systems reactive. Covers some juicy category theory and abstract algebra principles without going too deep into the math.

Cannot continuing reading it. The style of writing in this book is so poor that I have to put it down. Barely made it to chapter 3. Don't know if I can pick it up again. The problem is that there are too many transitions and references forward and backward to what was said in the last chapter, last section, last paragraph; to what will be covered next, in the next section, in the next chapter... Ugh. Too much of the author in it also. I don't want to read a technology book and keep remembering there's an author. It's like watching a movie and being constantly reminded that there's a director directing a film. If I wanted an author, I'd read fiction.# # #Some examples from chapter 2:Section 2.3.1, "You've probably noticed that I've been using the term 'pure functions' in the context of modeling behaviors[1]. I did this in chapter 1 as well and explained how purity helps you reason about your functions. To recap, a function is pure if it doesn't have any side effects. And what's a side effect? A side effect is something that's not within the control of the function that you implement. If you're manipulating the filesystem... This section presents optimizations you can perform on your model..." The page has a footnote ([1]) that says this:"You've already seen the virtues of pure abstractions in chapter 1..." [Wouldn't a footnote suffice? Either keep the footnote and drop the reference from text. But don't keep both. It's too silly. Where's the editing here?]Section 2.3.2, "In the previous section, you saw... [Are readers really suffering from such short term memory that they need to be reminded of what they just read?]Section 2.4, "In this book when we discuss domain models, I'll talk about modeling... You'll need to have a clear understanding... This section doesn't start with the theory. Instead, it begins with examples that show you what I mean by ADTSs..." [How about we just get to it instead. And then the reader will probably have a better chance of remembering what s/he just read if that's even a concern.]Section 2.6. "The side bar 'What is an effectful computation?' details what I mean." [Good gracious. If you have to call out your own sidebar, why not just bring it into the text and drop the side bar. The side bar is supposed to be like a parenthetical comment. It should stand outside the main line of reasoning or argument of the text.] # # #To be fair to the author, the fault of style falls squarely on the editor. To be fair to the editor, the style is so pervasive, it was probably hard to know where to begin and where to stop editing it. Feels like they did neither. But if they had done their job, the book would be shorter by about 1/3.A good edit, a good index and appropriate footnotes would have been much more effective aids to the reader.To be fair chapter 1 was a good read. Chapter 2 was so horrendous that I've lost interest.

This book is the perfect guide to implementing real-world use cases that uses functional and reactive programming. After reading the highly-rated red book Functional Programming in Scala by Bjarnason and Chiusano, something was missing after reading most of the book. The thing that was a bit lacking was actual applications of the principles in that book to real-world use cases. This book fills in that missing void. It applies functional programming concepts from the red book and from other sources to present a real, working solution applied to a Banking system and its use cases. I am only halfway through the book, but I wish I could digest the concepts as soon as possible and start applying them to real work.However, this book is not for beginners as most parts of the book can dive in to (pretty) advanced functional programming concepts like Lenses and Free Monads, but for intermediate to advanced Scala and functional programming aficionados this book is heaven-sent.

Functional programming is here and if you are working in the soft field, you at least have to know about it. That being said, while I dont work with Scala in my day to day job, I read Functional Programming in Scala to get familiar with the subject, but that book left me in some type of state where I understood the concept, but was lacking actual hands on to make the concept solid in my head.This books closes this void! That being said, you should get these two books to fully understand the concept and get some great examples to break the door into the functional programming area.The examples in the book are real world examples that make sense.

Functional programming is, in a sense, the next step in the evolution of pattern-based programming and this work by Debasish Ghosh helps point the way to building successfully on these functional patterns. Debasish shows us how to unify the world of domain-driven design, as laid out so well by Eric Evans and Vaughn Vernon, with the powerful constructs of functional programming in a way that will lead to better and more maintainable software. Don't be fooled, this is not an easy book to read, at least not if you're new to FP concepts, but if you feel like you want to push yourself to the next level and build better software, this is a must read.Note: I was, at least early on, a technical reviewer for this book. However, I receive no compensation for the ultimate success of this work. I simply believe it's an incredibly useful and important guide and want to ensure others are aware of it.
