Tonya Harding was really big news back in 1994, so most readers over age 30 (and many who are younger) will be familiar with the basics of her story: Tonya was a world class American figure skater who was accused of plotting, with her ex husband and several others, to seriously injure another skater, Nancy Kerrigan. Tonya pleaded guilty to covering up the attack after the fact and was banned from skating for life.This book is basically an autobiography starting from a very early age (Tonya has a remarkable memory for events even when very, very young) up until the date of publication in 2008. It takes the format of a series of interviews of Tonya by Lynda Prouse lightly annotated by Prouse in places to help clarify certain events. Because of the interview format, it does jump around between different time periods, rather than sequentially tracing her life forward. Some reviewers have criticized the book for that, but I found it is not too much of a problem. Prouse always makes an effort to pin down the exact time when events Tonya is describing occurred, so a pretty clear picture of Tonya's life (or at least the image of her life that she wants to project) emerges.Tonya apparently picked Prouse to interview her for this project because they were able to develop a strong rapport and Tonya enjoyed talking to Prouse. As such Prouse' questions of Tonya tend to be friendly in tone. However Prouse doesn't hesitate to ask tough questions when tough questions need to be asked--and clearly there are difficult questions to be asked given the controversial life Tonya has led. The reader can then decide for themselves whether Tonya's answers are persuasive.When it comes to the attack on Nancy, Tonya here is definitely sticking to her story that she knew nothing about it in advance. As such the reader isn't likely to learn much new about the attack that they didn't already know: Tonya isn't about to offer any insights into an attack she claims to have had nothing to do with. But the book is nevertheless offers fascinating insights into Tonya's life and the world of women's figure skating. Tonya's passion for skating comes through very, very strongly--she is clearly very proud of her skating achievements such as landing the triple axel at a time when that was very rare especially for women. This makes it all the more sad both the abusive relationships she seemed to have a knack for attracting and the lifetime ban from skating that was to be part of her punishment for her role in the attack on Nancy.Ultimately Tonya's story is a tragic one but the story of her life's tragedies is told very well here. Did Tonya deserve the tragedies that came her way or is she (as she maintains) also a victim (like Nancy) of her ex husband? The reader will have to decide for themselves after reading this book but the book does a first rate job of presenting Tonya's story from her point of view to allow the reader to make up their mind.

I did not think this book was a good read at all. It is written like a magazine interview instead of a story, which makes it hard to get into and easy to skip alot of really boring stuff. There is too much that Tonya claims to not remember, so alot seems to be missing and everything seems a little sketchy. I'm not saying she is lying in the book but the way that it is written is just like reading people talking and I lost interest very fast and was not able to finish it three quarters through.
My husband Greg and I have known Tonya for almost 14 years, and have been with her through many trials in her life. Author Lynda Prouse, captures the depth of personal truma as well as triumph in Tonya's life. If you have had an opinion one way or the other about her, this book will either confirm or change that opinion. In all the years that we have been close to her, she has NEVER wavered from the facts, which you will read. This book is an inspiraton for anyone who has ever suffered abuse at the hands of another, and wants to give up. Tonya has gone through so much, yet through her Faith, has gone on, as she beleives there is a better life. Tonya should be cheered, not jeered. I recommend you read this book, as it will inspire you in so many ways.Linda Lewis

Skating insiders from those days remember the federation's intense dislike for the blue-collar skater who didn't fit their Little Girl In A Pretty Box image.I'm glad that Tonya took the courageous step of telling her story. Any victim of childhood abuse or domestic violence can relate to the hurt and pervasive fear that she endured. I hope this proves therapeutic for Tonya, and gives others hope. In these pages is the heart of a champion.
This book is a difficult read, in part because of the subject matter contained (brutal gang rape), in part because Tonya appears to change her story repeatedly and to talk in circles, in part because there is a lot of whinning but mostly the format is difficult. Its jusr a bunch of transcribed and edited conversations. There is no "I'm sorry for my part" by Tonya. She honestly appears to be in denial. She takes little responsibility for any of her actions. The book promises to let you see that the real Tonya is a person who lived through many struggles and is a nice person. I have no idea if she is a nice person, but I do see that she has been horribly abused, and I do think her mother is in large part to blame. I love figure skating so I am willing to read the book, but I found it disappointing.
