I picked this book up in a bookstore, and got so engrossed reading it that I bought it. As I write, three people have given it five stars. Five people could give it three stars. One of the blurbs in the front of the book notes that the author has read a lot of books. What he takes from them is fascinating, but what is more fascinating is what he takes from his life, as lived at the collision of faith and art. Books like this always raise questions for me. Who is this book for? I'll answer that myself. i'd say it's for younger people who did not grow up in what he calls the post WW II Evangelical subculture. To the degree that he tells his own story, it's quite interesting. Where, in my opinion, books like this overreach is in cutting far too wide swaths and taking too great leaps of history. I think it is a mistake to be talking about modernism and then bring in postmodernism (without defining it), not bothering to note they are 100 years apart. Or to mention Walt Whitman and Jack Kerouac in the same sentence (who are also 100 years apart).It was inevitable that the author would resort to shop talk either on the Evangelical front or about the art scene. In this case, it's the latter. I wondered when he would bring in Marshall McLuhan, the Catholic Canadian media 'guru' who coined phrases like "The medium is the message". But when he did mention him, it was one sentence in passing, as if we all knew who he was (I'm guessing some of us don't). Perhaps he makes an appearance later on, but the first meeting is the best time for introductions. If you ask me why this book is like that, it's a problem of editing, which all recent books seem to have, and also because this book, like most good books is a series of essays. Publishers don't like essays, so they insist that the authors pad them and pass them off as a book. For myself, I'd rather the padding was pulled out and I could read the terse, gripping essays, however brief (and brief does not bother me-- would that this book was half as long).If someone were to stand in a store and read this (like I did), I'd suggest the chapter, "People of the Book and the Image" and probably the finale chapter. Now I play my hand. I'm a recent Catholic convert. The tortured tone that Evangelicals always have in writing about art is because they have no theology to support them. Catholics have sacramental theology. The seven sacraments are the primary means of grace, but they also view the entire universe and the realm of Creation sacramentally. Man may be fallen, but creation is still good. We are physical beings. Thus the candles, incense, stained glass windows, carved cruciifxes, and bouquets of flowers in Catholic worship.A book like this cannot help but retread ground, and I list a few companion books below. But what it offers is an exploration. There are numerous black and white photos of artworks, and a few color plates, not exactly to support a thesis by the author, but to bring the reader into the discussion on the same page, as it were. Also copious footnotes, both to reference works cited, and provide a helpful gloss to the text. There's a very good quote from Jaroslav Pelikan, for instance, in a footnote. The author is at his best in presenting us with an artwork or artist, and helping us to consider it or them from his own viewpoint or experience. The fire is strongest in this book when the artist in the author takes hold of the pen and beats down the academic (who he likely has to wrest it from).The subtitle of this book greatly resembles an excellent (and rather simpler) book by Steve Turner entitled "Imagine: A Vision for Christians in the Arts" also published by InterVarsity Press. My title for this review is the title of a book by British artist and musician, Steve Scott (who is also or has been a member of CIVA). As for the sacramental aesthetic, the very best writer on the topic was an Evangelical and became a Catholic, so his writing displays the best of both worlds. I refer to the inimitable Thomas Howard, author of many apologetics books, but I here refer to "Chance or the Dance" and "On Being Catholic".

The world of modern art, and the world of faith, particularly evangelical Christian faith have often been at odds with, or not even in conversation with each other. This is the challenge the author has wrestled with since his teenage years as an aspiring artist who embraced the evangelical faith in which he was raised. In the introduction, he describes his own struggle with the absence of mentors, the disregard of his church for the visual arts, and the parallel hostility toward religious faith he encountered in the art world.Much of this work explores the tensions between evangelical faith and modern art. Anderson contends that these collisions of faith and art may “reveal a third way, a great vista where biblical and theological reflection–especially the doctrines of creation and incarnation–become the wellspring of inspiration.” Each of his chapters includes models of this kind of biblical and theological reflection that serve, not to give definitive answers, but to point other artists who wrestle with the same tensions toward this “third way” in the practice of their art. Indeed, his conclusion is an invitation to both the church and artists to embrace this work, and for artists to give themselves as called people to the work of culture-making and good studio practice. He writes,“…the artists whom most of us deem to be successful share a common trait–they do the work. At some point they set romantic ideas about being an artist to the side and commenced doing the artist’s work. Arriving at this place requires one to accept delayed gratification, the awkwardness that is sure to come from making bad art and the reality of negative cash flow. Pushing beyond distraction and discouragement, they accomplished something Herculean–they pushed beyond musing and imagining to establish regular studio practices, to take on habits of making” (p. 252).Cameron Anderson is executive director of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) and what he offers in this book is nothing less than an analysis of the recent history of the visual arts and the challenges and opportunities for Christians who are called to work in this field._______________________________Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher . Loved this book. This is a much needed historical perspective and interaction with art history alongside the Evangelical response to faith in this history and where we are now, but this book offers much more in terms of a freeing hope for artists to engage with all their sensibilities to create visual art within a Christian based worldview. Anderson finishes last chapters challenging artists of faith by asking 6 questions for reflection. There is wisdom from years of walking this road himself as an artist and academic. Highly recommend.

The Faithful Artist is far more than an exploration of issues Christians have encountered as they have intersected the visual art world in the last 50 years – although it is that. It is a tour de force of Western cultural in the late 20th and early 21st century. Anderson writes with insight and uses his broad knowledge of art and writing to raise thought provoking questions about taste, truth, beauty, faith, and the place artists have in shaping/making our world. I’m personally thankful for challenges the book had for me.

The last Alan Greenspan book I reviewed was THE MAP AND THE TERRITORY in 2013. That book struck me as poorly conceived, amorphous, and showing scant understanding of what caused the Great Recession. This new book corrects many deficiencies that I and others perceived in THE MAP AND THE TERRITORY. However, I am still not entirely convinced of the correctness of its conclusions.My background has been as an industrial consultant for international businesses, and a real estate investor in the U.S. I have experienced the economy from industrial, international, and real estate perspectives.This book thoroughly covers the range of economic debates we are confronting as we try to understand why the economy collapsed in 2008 and why it grew so sluggishly until the recent upturn starting with Trump’s election. Was it because:• Labor unions made our workforce lazy and overpaid• Our corporation managements became complacent, lazy, self-serving, and frankly stupid• Our corporations became inefficient conglomerates, then fired too many employees when they “re-engineered.”• Our “entrepreneurism” has declined• Government-imposed regulations and taxes are stifling business• We spend too much on social welfare programs• We dis-invested in our industries in order to create in a financial economy driven by Wall Street stock jobbers who engaged in “financial chicanery to dupe investors.”• George W. Bush and the Republican Congress of 2001-2006 mismanaged the government by enacting tax cuts while increasing government spending• Too many jobs were moved out of the country to Mexico and China• Globalization harmed us because• …..other countries make things better than we do• …..other countries steal our technologies and don’t allow American products to be sold in their countries.• Our brick-and-mortar industries were disrupted by the internet• We let more immigrants into the country that we had jobs to employ them.• We allowed corporations to revoke the “social contract” of keeping their American workers employed.Greenspan and Wooldridge cover a lot of ground! Their discussions of current economic events are layered on top of a well-written history of capitalism in the USA. To me, the pivot point of the book is the optimistic time in 2000 when President Clinton said:=====“We are fortunate to be alive at this moment in history. Never before has our nation enjoyed, at once, so much prosperity and social progress with so little internal crisis and so few external threats.” The country had more jobs and higher wages than it had ever had before. It had turned deficits into surpluses and lagging productivity growth into a productivity boom. It had replaced outmoded ideologies—Republican ideology that saw all government intervention as pointless and Democratic ideology that tried to protect all jobs from economic change—with a new pro-growth consensus. “My fellow Americans,” Clinton announced, “we have crossed the bridge to the twenty-first century.”=====Then it all fell apart. The economy collapsed, and the middle class shriveled. A blogger on election night 2016 explained Trump’s surprise victory thus:=====People are suffering financially in ways that we haven't seen since the 1920s. We [Democrats] are close to losing in this election because Democrats who have enough money to be comfy don't see it. Don't know it and refuse to believe it.The country is still poor. The job market still s----. Bernie tapped into that anger and so did Trump. This was a referendum on poverty and what causes it.=====How do we restore growth to our economy and standard of living? Greenspan and Wooldridge provide answers in their final chapter AMERICA’S FADING DYNAMISM. In their view, our deficient growth seems to come down to two primary causes. The first is that productivity growth is deficient. Secondly, they theorize that we don’t embrace “creative destruction” like we used to.I question the productivity argument, because we’ve off-shored so much of our manufacturing, that we’ve become a “service economy.” It’s difficult to measure productivity in services, because many services are intangible. How do we measure productivity in healthcare, now the largest sector of our economy, when the value of human life can’t be measured in economic terms? How do we measure the productivity of financial advisers when we don’t even know if their advice is sound?I’m also not sure that Americans enjoyed all that “creative destruction” Greenspan says we relished in the past. Our social welfare state exists in its present form because Americans did not like being put out of their jobs every few years and watching their children starve. Or being packed off to the poorhouse like spavined horses when they became too infirm to work. Mr. Greenspan was in his youthful prime during the 1960’. He should be able to remember that a primary civil mission of the national government in those days was to maintain full employment. Americans have never enjoyed prolonged periods of unemployment.And what about the trade deficit? We've never before handed off so much of our economy to Mexico and China in any prior period of our history. We are breaking new ground on the type of “destruction” that is not creative, but merely the removal of American workers from employment, and their replacement by foreigners who produce product that we import into the USA.Perhaps our first effort at “restoring American dynamism” should be to bring the jobs back from Mexico and China, and then balance the trade by tariffs with countries that run chronic trade deficits with us in manufactured products. Alexander Hamilton taught us way back in 1790 that we cannot be a strong country without manufacturing most of what we consume or use as capital equipment. We are going to have to buckle down and relearn a lesson we never should have forgotten.I am left with the impression that Mr. Greenspan’s primary proposed solution really boils down to "entitlement reform." That means cutting, or at least means-testing, Social Security and Medicare. He makes a (dubious?) connection between our allegedly spending too much public money on Social Security and Medicare, and our allegedly spending too little on investment in productivity-enhancing equipment in the private sector. Again, I wonder how we are going to invest in improving productivity when our companies are moving manufacturing to cheap-labor countries in order to AVOID spending money automating their American factories? Our corporation managements have hundreds of billions of dollars to spend buying back their companies' stock at inflated prices, and they DON'T have money to invest in improving the productivity of their businesses?Despite these differences in perspective, I was educated by reading the wide and deep spectrum of Mr. Greenspan’s and Adrian Wooldridge’s economic history. Everyone from laypersons to professional economists can profit from it. The historical information and economic viewpoints are interesting and easy to absorb.I think the right approach to this book is to comprehend Greenspan’s and Wooldridge’s economic history and viewpoints on current economic events. Then think them through and draw your own conclusions. Given the wide range of viewpoints, you’re bound to agree with some, while questioning others. That is what a well-written book, striving to be objective in covering a wide range of controversial points, should provoke the readers to do.

This is a well written, thoroughly researched, and approachable read. It synthesizes an enormous amount of data and information into a easily digestible whole, while being sure not to gloss over important facts and statistics that illustrate the larger arguments being presented. It is well worth a read.It may be worth mentioning that the crux of many of the negative reviews lies in the reader's disagreements with the arguments or conclusions made by Wooldridge and Greenspan. But a book is not poorly written, and certainly not deserving of abusive invective, simply because the reader disagrees with its arguments. Nor should one who pontificates from behind an amazon screen name be considered an authoritative opinion on economic analysis. Take these reviews with a grain of salt. Perhaps my own included.

I like the idea of this book and its breadth. However, I wonder how such outstandingly smart authors could make basic factual errors. I have just started on the book, but the following error raises suspicion about the other information presented.On page 141, they say, "The most interesting figure in this retail revolution was Richard Sears," then go on to say, "In 1902, Sears was fulfilling 100,000 orders a day" and "In 1906, Sears and his business partner, Alvah Roebuck, took the company public and opened a $5 million mail-order plant in Chicago, the largest business building in the world."But by 1906 Roebuck was gone and Sears no longer had an active role in the business. Sears' (the company) public offering, sharing of ownership with employees, construction of the massive facilities, and rise to greatness were entirely the doing of Julius Rosenwald, who had purchased control of the company. Richard Sears was an imaginative copywriter who often sold mediocre products before Rosenwald instituted far higher standards.Given that this correct story is presented in every source, including many books, on Sears' history, it is hard for me to imagine how the authors could have come up with this fantasy. It was Rosenwald, his colleagues, and his successor General Robert Wood who made Sears the best and largest retailer in the world for much of the 20th century.I dislike being a curmudgeon, but I expect better from potentially great books and their authors and editors.

I am reading a 3 series book and when I am finished, I will start on this book. Can't wait.

Kathleen Fuller never fails me. I know that when I pick up one of her books I’m going to be pulled into a community of people that I can relate too (even despite our vast difference in lifestyle) and appreciate. I adore getting to go back to Birch Creek, and despite the fact that technically I started a new series I’m with my same ol’ friends (I mean even Cevilla made a cameo!). I like that Kathleen focuses several series around the same community. She continues to branch out with new themes with each series while keeping a central cast of characters that are familiar and comfortable. Fresh and familiar are an alluring combination for someone who isn’t keen on change (that would be me :D). I also love that she can dig into some deeper themes while still maintaining a coziness to her writing that is like a gentle reminder that even when things are hard there is still good all around us. And I think we all need to be reminded from time to time that especially when things are hard God has still got us.If ever there was a pair of mismatched people it is Ruby and Christian. Ruby who is so effervescent and truly optimistic that she is not appreciated by those around her. I get her. OK, outside the whole bubbly optimistic thing, I’m more a pessimistic optimist but ya know, moments of square pegs in round holes. She’s scatterbrained and clumsy and just can’t seem to get it right, until she does. I get that. I am that. In running from home to her brother’s so perhaps she can start a future with a fresh start she’s really just trying to run from herself. She just doesn't’ realize it. Location doesn’t magically turn you into a round peg. Thing is, she had to run from herself to find herself. Christian, on the other hand, doesn’t even realize he’s a square peg trying to fit into anything. He’s just a peg. He knows what he knows and does what he does and while he wants to grow a future he doesn’t even get that he doesn’t get it. But thinks that he can learn it from a book. Let’s face it, I could totally be Christian too :D Only thing is that Christian doesn’t need to run from anything, he’s got his mind set and his goals in place. He just doesn’t realize that he can’t achieve them simply by making them, and that not everything can be learned from a book . . . sadly.I loved watching these two disasters figure out life. And each other. I loved that Kathleen stepped away from the traditional cliché idea that only women could be teachers. I mean, I’m sure male Amish teachers are pretty rare but she introduced the idea to the mainstream reader. And she showed the heartache that must come with that, stepping outside the traditional gender roles and away from family expectations to pursue a passion. She also built an intriguing secondary story line with Selah, Christian’s sister, and her struggles to figure out life as well. I enjoyed watching her grow and change. I enjoyed watching her run away from herself as well. I think we all do that sometimes. In trying to figure out this thing we call life, we try to escape what makes it hard when really it’s our own selves just trying to find our matching peg. Sometimes it’s ourselves we are trying to run from and run too. We just can’t seem to see the other side. Another highly recommended Kathleen Fuller book that kept me engrossed in the lives of my Birch Creek family. And the impatient waiting for the next book commences. . .I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by NetGalley. The Teacher's Bride by Kathleen Fuller is from the "Amish Brides of Birch Creek series. In this installment Christian Ropp moves to Birch Creek to accept a teaching assignment as well as escape the family that he grew up. Ruby Glick has also grown up in a stifling home and choses to visit her brother's family in Birch Creek for an extended period of time. Christian has grown to appreciate the ordered well planned life and Ruby who always lived life on the edge and never planned in advance was seeking to turn over a new leaf and start living a more ordered life. Both moved with plans to meet and marry their life partner. Christian broke out into a cold sweat whenever he even thought of talking to a woman that he was interested and Ruby barged right in which didn't work out well either in the Amish community. When one time Ruby had again found herself in an uncomfortable situation she developed horrible hiccups and ran outside to escape the embarrassment, Christopher also left to make sure she was ok. They got to talking and eventually met up to help Christopher figure out how to get to know the woman of his dreams, Martha without breaking into a cold sweat just thinking about it. Ruby needed to find a job but no one would hire her since she was so chaotic. When Christopher hurt his ankle he suggested that Ruby might be a good substitute if she would follow his lesson plan. Can Christopher figure out how to find a wife? Can Ruby learn to plan and reel in her chaotic tendencies and possibly find a love of her own? Read this great Amish love story to find out the answers.I liked reading this newest book of Kathleen Fuller. She brings these characters to life and brings the reader directly into the Amish lifestyle. She has the reader rooting for the main characters and wanting to read just a few more pages until the book is too quickly finished. The reader is left anticipating the next installment of the series even though the reader can read any of the books and enjoy them without the rest (they easily stand alone). I would encourage any girl or woman who loves reading Amish romance to read this one.I received this book from BookLook for this review.

Really useless unless you happen to be staying at the Hotel Danielli (one of the most expensive in town). I have free apps on my phone such as Gogobot which provide much more information and allow you to customize your interests.

I kept waiting for the book to begin, and then it ended. It has links to either nowhere, or Wikipedia. The best thing about this lousy book is that it had a link to Wikipedia's list of sandwiches. I learned something from that, just not about Venice.

Easy and quick read. Even has links and prices of restaurants/transportation.However, hotel recommendation is too expensive. Would prefer few more hotel suggestions.

This book gave some great ideas on what to do when we land in Venice next week.

Very informative and helpful! This book is a great one to look at if you are interested in going to Venice at any point, or even if you are just interested in learning a bit about the area and places to go there. Definitely would recommend.

Good ideas for 3 short days. Sadly every Resturant listed is pricey- but Venice is not cheap. Wish for couple suggestions of reasonable price. Otherwise nice suggestions of where to go what to go to see the basics
