About the Author

Najmieh Batmanglij was born and raised in Iran. During her childhood, her mother wouldn't allow her in the kitchen. "Concentrate on your education," she would say. "There will be plenty of time for you to cook later in life." Najmieh came to America in the 1960s to study at university and would cook Persian food with fresh local produce using recipes sent by her mother in letters. Her housemates loved the food she made and encouraged her to cook all the more. Little did she know that the American food revolution had just begun. Later, when Najmieh returned to Iran with her master's degree in education in hand, her mother welcomed her into the kitchen and started to work with her. At the end of 1979, as the Iranian Revolution took a more fundamentalist turn, Najmieh and her husband fled to France, where their first son Zal was born. It was in France that Najmieh decided to follow her passion for cooking. With the help of her friends and neighbors, she wrote her first cookbook, Ma Cuisine d Iran. In 1983 she and her husband emigrated to America, where she gave birth to their second son, Rostam, and wrote her first book in English, Food of Life. Najmieh has spent the past 35 years cooking, traveling, and adapting authentic Persian recipes to tastes and techniques in the West. She has been hailed as "the guru of Persian cuisine" by The Washington Post. Her Food of Life was called "the definitive book on Iranian cooking" by the Los Angeles Times. Her Silk Road Cooking was selected as one of the 10 best vegetarian cookbooks of 2004 by The New York Times; and her book From Persia to Napa: Wine at the Persian Table won the Gourmand Cookbook Award for the best wine history book of 2007. Najmieh is a member of Les Dames d Escoffier and lives in Washington, DC, where she teaches Persian cooking, and consults with restaurants around the world.

Being half Persian, I'm always trying to discover more of my lost culture. Food is a great way. My favorite recipe in this book is the rice! Persians make rice awesome. The tadig is epic. I've made this rice many times before, but I love her recipe with adding rose water to the saffron and cardamom pods.Over all most recipes are hit or miss. I feel some are harder than they should be. Not all are tasty enough to justify all the work.I'm yet to find fresh fava beans in my area, but if I do I really want to try the fava bean recipe!

A couple of the recipes are really weird to me, for someone who has grown up with Persian food. For example, mushrooms in khoresh e karafs?! Or herbs in fesenjan?! This is a major diversion from what I grew up with, but I'll just not add those things. Otherwise, this book is straight up, and its great to get a quicker cooking version of the food.

So many splendid small dishes that are made with healthy ingredients; much simpler and quicker than most Persian cuisinelots of light fresh fareit's more of a Persian culinary influence on whatever one happens to bring back from a visit to the farmer's marketas many recipes lend themselves for a change up of ingredients depending on what's on hand or your particular tasteand most are vegetarian or come with instructions to make it vegetarianbought this book for many friends and familyit's also a GREAT first book for newbees in the kitchen.. a confidence builder for new cooks that's' for sureNooshe' Jahn!

I love to cook and I use Batmanglij's other books. What I love about this book is that it's Persian food made simple and healthy. It is great to have many vegetarian and vegan options. I love the new recipes with kale, butternut squash and quinoa. This is an easy book for both experienced cooks and a novice.

This has been the most used cookbook in our house over the past year and i have gifted it to 2 friends as well. Persian food is so delicious and pretty healthy. There are a lot of versions of classic Persian dishes but simplified and updated, as well as redone as vegetarian/vegan (or providing for vegetarian option). I've probably cooked almost all the recipes by this point (except the few desserts), and most do not require any substantial cooking skills, are easy to follow and well explained. You would need some ingredients that most stores do not carry (i.e. barberries, sumac, etc), but i have been able to find almost everything needed between whole foods and amazon. The pictures accompanying each recipe are also beautiful (and i have been able to replicate the look of most). There are a lot of healthy salads, a few egg recipes, a few meatballs, a few kebabs, 3 or 4 fish and then several versions of the famous Persian rice plus curries. It's has some good options for weeknight cooking (you might have to do some prep the day before). Would highly recommend

Najmieh Batmanglij once again delivers a fabulous cookbook. I really like the cooking shortcuts it helps when time is limited. If you are familiar with Persian cooking it can be so laborious so any reduced time is a welcome.The cookbook arrived ahead of time. Great service!

This book, like all of Najmieh's books is a gem. I have every one of her books and have bought multiple copies of each and given them as gifts to friends and family. (I bought 4 the first time and just ordered 4 more, and I'm sure I will be ordering more!) Not only are these cookbooks easy to use and follow, but she recounts the history and culture of her beloved Iran in each of her books through the recipes, description of the ingredients and the high level photography and layout. I'm an Iranian and consider myself a fairly good cook, but every Persian dish I make I first refer to Najmieh's books for inspiration and a new way of approaching the dish. Najmieh's value for the aesthetics and quality shows in her preparations and presentation. A must have cook book for anyone who likes to eat, cook or is interested in diverse cultures!

I really like the book and the thinking behind it. I have adapted some things to suit myself, for instance the omelet - I just use salsa instead of dicing up peppers and tomatoes, but I have a strong affinity for cumin and the rest of her spice palette - I'm not Persian, so this is all new to me. I'm a fan of Indian food, and Persian food as well. This is the book I was looking for.

I like Randy Frazee. I've had the privilege of hearing his teaching in person. He is forthright in this book about what happens after you die, backed up by scripture references, for those who believe in Jesus and those who do not. The book is readable and engaging, but most of all reassuring. Yes, Jesus is enough. The book can also serve as a great future reference or for discussion with those who do not believe and have questions.

Having heard Randy Frazee preach at Oak Hills Church, I eagerly awaited his new book. It met or exceeded my expectations, in that Randy always stays true to scripture and is exceptionally honest. He freely admits there is much we don't know about heaven, but he answers the most basic question of all--is accepting Christ as your savior enough to qualify you for eternity in His presence? He used the story of his mother's death to illustrate his own fearful doubts about Heaven, during the last three days of her life. It's comforting to me to know that even the pastor of a large church has doubts from time to time. I did learn a new concept, that of an "intermediate" place after death for believers, before Christ returns to Earth. Not "purgatory," but another place that precedes the magnificent "streets of gold" city described in Revelation. I have never heard this before, but it is interesting. Randy also discusses in great detail Hades, hell, the lake of fire and the fate of those who will face judgement. I plan to re-read several chapters to gain a better understanding, and use the selected scriptures as a study guide. Since most likely nobody is getting out of here alive, I highly recommend "What Happens After You Die" for all Christians, or those who are curious about what may await us when this life's door closes, and that mysterious one on the other side opens.

This is an amazing book. It helps the reader understand what happens when we die from a biblical perspective. A true support for someone with a loved one that may be in poor health or the reader themselves. This book helps people venture past their fear of death and death denial to find plain sense comfort and hope.

I have lost loved ones including my husband. I have read the Bible. This book explained the afterlife in such a way that the reader can understand it. All my questions were answered and the book put my fears to rest. I highly recommend it.

What a reassuring book. There is such confusion about the life after we leave earth and Randy Frazee has presented remarkable Biblical research that gives hope to all those who follow Jesus. Questions that plague so many are answered and leave us looking forward to the Great Reunion with loved ones and to finally see Jesus "Face to Face."

The book was not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to talk more about Heaven. That wasn't the case..

Found the book very interesting. It refers first to scripture and revelations and then interprets. Very different from catholic teaching and tv and movie ideas. But makes a lot more sense.

I found this book to be comforting and reassuring as i mourn the loss of a loved one. Mr. Frazee covers what life is like with and without Jesus and how it affects us in the afterlife. I encourage anyone to read this book and give it thought about what it talks about.

About the Author

Mike Royko was born in Chicago in 1932 and for much of his youth lived in the flat above his family's tavern on Milwaukee Avenue. Not only did he become the most widely read columnist in Chicago history, but his column was syndicated in more than 600 newspapers across the country. He was also the author of the classic account of city machine politics, Boss. Mike Royko's last column in the Chicago Tribune appeared in March 1997, a month before his death. His memorial service was held on a sunny day in Wrigley Field.

I'm pushing 80, a retired elementary teacher, and well remember using a few examples of Rokoy's columns, that appeared in our local paper, to help my group of gifted students understand satire. In discussions with my grand daughter, I realized she was having same issue with a writing assignment. I went on line and purchased this, laughed so much I had to order the other. Now, I cannot part with either one, want to share with friends in my "snowbird" village, so had to buy another copy to give my grandchild! I read and giggle, and I have only been to Chicago twice, and neither time did I get out of the car! This is great humorous reading no matter where you live or where you have been! Enjoy

Before purchasing this book I had never read a Mike Royko column. I am not from Chicago and I do not recall seeing his column in the newspapers I read.The book is a treat. Mike Royko wastes no words. Many of Royko's columns in the book are about life's absurdity, which Royko notes with biting satire. At other times he is sentimental. As another reviewer noted, the piece Mike Royko wrote after the death of his first wife was very moving. Amazingly Mike Royko had no educational background to be a writer. He taught himself via on the job training.I did note some possible inconsistencies in the columns in the book. This is not a criticism. Mike Royko had a debater's ability to argue either side of an issue. Also, people are entitled and frequently should change their opinions based upon new facts and thoughts.I highly recommend this book. The introductions or commentaries to each decade of Mike Royko's career written by Lois Wille add significantly to the book.

I always find it hardest to write reviews for books that I like unconditionally. The genius of this work just seems... too obvious for words.Royko has a good eye for unsung heroes, as in "Mighty Teddy Still the Champ." First describing a "twenty-eight-year-old muscle-head" who earns six figures, he contrasts this with an talented, gritty, but unknown Chicago softball star who played about 250 games a year for 20+ years.Royko also has a keen eye for absurdity, as in "Don't Let Food Bug You," where he describes actual legal definitions for acceptable defect levels. "Don't ask me why they allow fewer insects in apple butter than in raisins, but more rodent hairs," he comments. "I guess it's a matter of taste."Royko has an obsession with justice and bluntly cuts through the absurdity of government beaurocracy, as in "A Faceless Man's Plea," the story of a veteran whose request for help in restoring his blown up face are replied to in form letters from the VA.Perhaps most impressively, whenever it seems that Royko gets backed into a corner, he fights back with humor- and ALWAYS wins. On of the high points for me is "High Rise Man," where Royko responds to criticism that he is drifting away from his working class roots. "As an amateur anthropologist, I was familiar with the ways of Two Flat Man, Bungalow Man, Tavern Man...," he claims. "I decided to follow the example of Margaret Mead, the late social anthropologist, whose method was to be part of the tribal culture she studied."

I remember when I was a kid and we moved to Chicago in 1969 from Wyoming. Within a few years, I would hear my parents and their friends talking and laughing over the recent newspaper columns written by Mike Royko.I relived this period as I read this book, as he covers a wide range of subjects, from politics, to sports, and current affairs of that time period. His story telling and satirical style are unmatched. I feel I was transported back in time. My 24 year old daughter also loved this book.

Brought back wisdom that is as relative now as it was back then. Mike was such a good writer to help put any circumstance into perspective. Enjoyed this book.
