About the Author

Les Crowder has devoted his entire adult life to the study and care of honeybees. Dedicated to finding organic and natural solutions for problems commonly treated with chemicals, he designed his own top-bar hives and set about discovering how to treat disease and genetic weaknesses through plant medicine and selective breeding. He has been a leader in his community, having served as New Mexico's honeybee inspector and president of the New Mexico Beekeepers Association. He is an avid storyteller and has spoken annually at the NM Organic Farm Conference for over fifteen years. Les is also a certified teacher and enjoys teaching children Spanish and science.

My husband and I built our own Kenyan Top Bar Hive and installed a package of 3 pounds of worker bees and one queen. Everything went well and after checking the hive two weeks later, we found the bees were already making comb and the queen was already laying eggs! Cool! We sat back on our laurels then, and waited to see what what happen. Then we got this book and read that we were supposed to be checking on the bees for several potential problems. Who knew that the bees can run amuck and make crooked combs that run into another? Good thing we read this book! We now use our book as our definitive reference guide. It's easy for us "newbees" :) to understand and there are good diagrams for bar rotations and the reasons for doing it.

Let's get this out of the way. This is not a one-source guide for a total newbie so one would want some supplemental information sources or a good mentor. I am a total beekeeping noob - I've handled other people's bees but have none of my own yet. I have needed other books and online sources but I'm glad I own this book.The book makes a strong argument for organic beekeeping practice and rearing your own local queens. Much of this could be done with traditional box hives as well but the simplicity and low cost of the top-bar was seductive enough to persuade me. The sections on top-bar hive management and queen rearing were both very well done. If the the section on actual hive construction seems thin that's because it really is that simple. If you feel you need more detail or want a hive with some visual appeal there are plenty of free plans available online.What I got out of the book was1) Colony Collapse is probably the result of commercial beekeeping and agriculture practice rather than something that just happened randomly2) I can effectively make stronger, disease resistant bees with organic methods and selective queen rearing.3) Breeding strong disease resistant bees is not only good for me but good for beekeeping and agriculture in general. Me maintaining a couple of highly medicated hives with purchased queens does absolutely nothing to help the greater imperiled bee population.4) I can do this and I don't need to drop $1000 up front just to get started. After evaluating money saved by not purchasing a Langstroth hive I'm redirecting my start up funds to better equipment - smoker, veil, etc.

Before I got my first little group of bees I had studied on the net, joined a local very active bee club and read a couple of books. I can honestly say that this is by far the most informative source of info that I have found. It is now my number one info guide with my bees. I first went with a top bar hive because as a very petite, retired lady, I simply would not be able to lift and move 30 to 60 lb lang.hive boxes around and like all the other critters I have, I try to raise them all as natural as possible. While all of my other sources preach chemical treatments, raising bees on plastic frames, taking all their honey/feed stores, then feeding sugar water for their health through the winter and then wonder about colony collapse ??? This book was by far the most informative, easiest to understand, most logical, and natural way to keep bees that I have found and by using his methods my little swarm of bees have been thriving and growing from a handful of bees with a grafted queen (from a friend) to a 16 full bars of natural comb bees, that are thriving and still building going into winter. I highly recommend this book especially to any thinking about keeping bees or to anyone looking for a more natural way to keep your little insects chemical free and healthier, for you and your family, too.

I've just about finished building a Top Bar Hive (my first hive of any kind) and have been researching beekeeping fairly extensively to prepare to keep bees this coming spring. I've purchased 4, and read 3 1/2 books on beekeeping (The Thinking Beekeeper: A Guide to Natural Beekeeping in Top Bar Hives; Beekeeping For Dummies; The Beekeeper's Bible: Bees, Honey, Recipes & Other Home Uses) including this one. I'm still working my way through the Beekeeper's Bible, which covers everything (and probably more) that anyone would want to know about bees and beekeeping (citing, for example, information dating back to before the time of Christ), but surprisingly only mentions top bar hives once or twice.IF you are interested in keeping a top bar hive, this is the book I would recommend above all others. It covers general beekeeping information well, and gives very practical advice specific to top bar hives. For instance, no other book I've read (or internet source I've come across so far) covers the various reasons and methods for re-arranging the bars of comb so thoroughly. This book also includes a number of illustrations to accompany the explanations of bar rotation. It also (as the title implies) spends time covering the benefits of chemical-free beekeeping, and gives organic methods of handling issues as they arise.It has been my experience that most resources either:1) Thoroughly address beekeeping with Langstroth-type equipment (leaving the reader to further research how to translate these practices to top bar hives)or2) Cover top bar hives very well, but assume that the reader is already familiar with general beekeeping methods including disease and pest management.In my opinion, this book covers general beekeeping information and top-bar-specific methods better than than any other. In short, this book is the most thorough single source of top bar beekeeping that I have come across.

Mark W. Steege, PhD, NCSP, BCBA-D, is Professor of Educational and School Psychology at the University of Southern Maine. He has written numerous research articles, book chapters, and books on functional behavioral assessment and response to intervention. His primary research interests are the application of applied behavior analysis in the assessment and treatment of interfering behaviors with persons with developmental disabilities. Dr. Steege has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, School Psychology Review, and Journal of Evidence-Based Practices for Schools.   Jamie L. Pratt, PsyD, BCBA-D, is Assistant Professor and Chair of Educational and School Psychology at the University of Southern Maine. Dr. Pratt has coauthored several articles and book chapters on behavioral assessment and intervention, and has provided assessment, intervention, and consultation services for school-age children with developmental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Her primary research interests are in extending behavior analytic assessment and intervention methods to improve outcomes for children.   Garry Wickerd, PhD, NCSP, BCBA, is Assistant Professor of Educational and School Psychology at the University of Southern Maine. He has coauthored several behavioral research publications and serves on the editorial board of School Psychology Forum. This book is a good summary of industry's experience, explained by the architect with scientific background. Unlike from many other books, author had no goal to write some pre-defined amount of pages, but had a goal to make the comprehensive overview, merging all sources and experience available to a single knowledge source.It's hard to read, it's hard to understand, because of it's saturated with a lot of mathematical explanations. This book is overkill for most of the engineers and companies. Almost for sure, this book will require from you a lot of knowledge you don't have yet and will use all your brain power for every single page.But it worth the time and effort spent IMHO. All you need to know in the same place. Properly organized and explained in details.You know, with professional books, the biggest challenge is not to afford a book's price, but make the right decision, should you invest your time in reading or not, because it's much more valuable. My IMHO - this book worth the time investment.It's available for free in PDF from the author's site, so you can read it before order. But I bought the paper version.P.S. I worked with Ilya in the same company, when I had a title of Principal Engineer and was focused mostly on eCommerce projects. I had a draft of the book from the author before it was published. I can be biased, but did my best to be professional.

I couldn't understand the target audience of the book. It is neither a textbook nor a self-study book. The author simply compiled a list of mathematical models that can be applied in the marketing but didn't provide concrete examples with data to show how actually models are used. All you need is the table of content of the book and then you can read the Wikipedia pages for better understanding. I almost felt like the author rushed to get published and didn't actually want the reader to understand the concepts sufficiently and be comfortable enough to apply. The severe lack of example analysis using data sets corresponding to the compiled theories vividly manifests this shortcoming. in short, you can buy this book if you are interested to know which mathematical theories and tools people use in marketing without any expectation of being able to apply the theories.

The book is divided into six large and highly distinct chapters or parts, each of which deserves a dedicated review.The introductory chapter focuses on the relationship between marketing and mathematical optimization. It draws a big picture of marketing automation and its relationship with data science. I think that it connects business problems with technology in a very meaningful way and establishes a new fundamental framework that advances understanding of modern marketing.The second chapter focuses on machine learning and provides a decent overview of machine learning methods such as regression and clustering. While its aim is to “briefly review” the key methods, it is a bit overloaded with mathematical detail. Although the chapter is well structured, it can come across as overly complex for readers who are not familiar with ML and statistics, yet excessively shallow for readers who are.The third chapter is dedicated to targeted ads and promotions. This is where the book turns really valuable, as it delivers a very detailed and comprehensive description of methods for customer data analytics. Having read another great book on this subject, Winston’s Marketing Analytics: Data-Driven Techniques with Microsoft Excel, I have found this one to be more rigorous and advanced.The third and fourth chapters engage in a discussion about the implementation of search and recommendation services. While I see it as a good theoretical study, I think that it would benefit from more practical examples, using search engines like ElasticSearch or Solr.The last topic is price management. The chapter provides a number of techniques for retailers, but manufacturing and wholesaling are not covered. The scope is impressive; in addition to the introduction, the book has four massive chapters that cover promotions, searches, recommendations, and pricing. But what really stands out is the strong focus on the industrial reports and models used by leading companies such as LinkedIn and MediaMath.Keep in mind that it is a very technical book that assumes a good knowledge of statistics, and it is full of optimization models and numerical examples. This is good for developers and data scientists who want to understand the economic context and implementation details but not so good for business users, in my opinion.

Very rarely you come across a book that you just don't want to buy for yourself but also for your team. This book belongs in that category. Author has done justice to the marketing topics and able to compartmentalize marketing data science in right domains. I personally have 2 copies of the book and 3rd copy (paperback) on the way and that would be going out to the team.

A top-notch text that demonstrates true mastery in statistics and machine learning. Most of the knowledge here is portable to domains outside of the specific niche of "algorithmic marketing". If you're on the fence, just buy it. This will be a long-term facet in my ML library. Well done.

A heavy coffee table book very light in information, with too many authors repeating each other.There is very little about seed morphology apart from (nice) photos. You would not find anywhere on the magnolias section mention that seeds come in pods. But in the "Similar species" blurb on each page you will find authors x, y, z saying the same things about the genus as other pages. The main theme of the book is that many plants are endangered and need conservation; apart from this drumbeat there is little intelligence, and that is conveyed in dull language (for instance the icky word "outcompeted", and the notion that a seed is airborne and therefore has wings). There is no clade schematic, and there are less than 50 words in 600 p on physiology. Dedicated botanists put out less pretentious and vastly more informative publications in the past, typically with drawings which convey much more than the photos, prior to discovery of DNA and elucidation of relationships and evolution.This copy will go straight to a charity bookstore and perhaps do some good through several such brief possessions. One might say it is symptomatic of the superficiality of the times, and especially since it is published by an academic press (Chicago). It is at least well printed and bound (in China), in contrast to many books coming out of the Oxbridge presses these days which fall apart in the first reading.

A good book for the professional gardener but I was disappointed on lack of specific germination for each seed shown- more for a reference library than for an average gardener!

Beautifully designed, one seed per page, fascinating. Even just reading the names of the plants can sound like poetry. I'm not a scientist, I have a gardener's interest in seeds and plants. This is a book to ooh and ahh over.

My son loves horriculture and has a obsession with collecting seeds so he LOVES this book with so many seeds and interesting facts! Great illustrations, and plenty of cool info! I recommend for anyone whom loves horticultural!
