I'm in awe at the intricacies and adaptability of the human mind to be able to cope with horrors that are imposed by humans on to other humans....especially babies and children.I read this book during the early 90's while I was in my early 20's. Now almost 30 years later I have circled back around to it after experiencing a decade of deep healing from DID myself. While I never experienced these kinds of horrors myself, I did experience enough sexual abuse to divide into over a dozen alters. The story of The Troops has reignited in me the importance of compassion and grace towards those around us that need our understanding and not our judgements.Truddi, thank you for so bravely sharing your story and journey. It lives on even after you have now passed on to a more peaceful Loving place.

This book is gut wrenching. It is not easy to read based on the horrors and events that are described in this book. You find yourself crying and wanting justice at the same time; you want to pick up this child and run her away into a safe haven. This book helped me to find what I am going to school for now. I have bought 11 copies of this book, one at a time. Each time, I lend it to a friend with the promise of return, and they never give it back to me. I have re-read this book 5 times. WARNING-extremely graffic content.

This book was referred by one of my professors and I ordered it on a whim. I could not put the book down. At times it was emotionally hard to read (incest, sexual abuse and beastiality) however the travels of therapy were awe-striking. I do recommend for anyone unfamiliar with multiple personality disorder read the therapists note in the front so that you can comprehend where the book jumps around and why.

This is a dark story of child abuse so sickening that I now understand why people develop multiple personalities inside their head to escape the horrors of life. Frankly, I do not know how else Truddi would have survived her childhood.

The seller was great, it arrived really fast and exactly as described. The book itself I read a couple decades ago. It delves into forgotten memories and what the mind is capable of doing to protect itself after extreme abuse. If you have any interest in multiple personality disorder, or what a child abuse survivor might face to get help in the 80's then read this book because it will help you understand that not so long ago this was a "don't tell" subject that no one wanted to discuss.

I would say it takes a tremendous amount of courage it requires to read past the Introduction and complete the story. Be prepared for some heavy therapy with yourself if you are the survivor of sexual, physical and or emotional childhood abuse or have a close relationship with someone who has been a child victim. Years of therapy never provided this much insight into my own mother's mind and behaviors. It's so comforting to know this woman's story has been published for those who suffer in silence. Thank you to everyone who made it possible to get this book published. I'm grateful a friend recommended this book to me when I had difficulty understanding my own mother's behavior.

Gritty - adult audience only - but REMARKABLE. The troops for Truddi Chase offer a raw look at the affects of child abuse on the human psyche. What she did to survive - and what she chose to do with her 92 different personalities - is different than any other multiples story out there. Do not miss it. Gives you a true look at what goes on in the brilliant minds of those who have Dis-associative Identity Disorder.

"Love it" are the wrong words to describe my rating, but this is a deeply affecting book. I saw the author on Oprah years ago, and still remember her vividly. Be warned that this is a very disturbing true story.

Who Will Shout If Not Us?: Student Activists and the Tiananmen Square Protest, China, 1989 (Civil Rights Struggles around the World), by Ann Kerns

From Booklist

Like the other entries in the Civil Rights Struggles around the World series, this book chronicles events that will be ancient history to its readership but closes with a brief analysis of the enduring effects of the infamous Tiananmen Square conflict in 1989. After laying out a general look at China in the twentieth century, Kerns presents a detailed, dispassionate account of the events of 1989, known in China as the “June 4th Protests,” to distinguish them from the many other demonstrations (peaceful and otherwise) that have occurred in Tiananmen Square. Forced to rely largely on foreign and refugee reports—because of the Chinese government’s disinterest in transparency—she paints a picture of an initially nonviolent series of student protests that escalated in large part because of the government’s clumsy attempts to ignore, belittle, or at least put an unfavorable spin on the protesters and their issues before taking an uncompromising hard line. Well stocked with small color photos, side boxes (including one on the still-anonymous “Tank Man”), and supportive back matter, this makes a serviceable assignment title on the topic. Grades 6-9. --John Peters

Review

"It is a challenging job to try to set a civil rights struggle in a cultural and historical context; however, the various authors of the books in the series Civil Rights Struggles Around the World strive to do so. In Who Will Shout If Not Us?, Kerns provides a brief description of China's early history before delving into the 20th century narrative that sets the stage for student revolts. Key characters and movements are detailed, along with sidebars that highlight their importance and provide easy reference for unfamiliar names or key concepts. Other titles in the series display the same careful research and well-organized information. Plenty of photographs and the sidebars with relevant information create visual variety, though occasionally sidebars cover two facing pages and awkwardly disrupt the flow of the main text. The commendable back matter, which includes a useful time line of events and a decent glossary, also contains a 'who's who' that reiterates the prominent people and provides a solid paragraph of biographical information. Though these titles are notable for the level of care in both their content and production, they remain resources that only a limited audience will be likely to turn to, and then only when needed for research." --VOYA (Journal)"Presenting an in-depth view of groundbreaking events and movements in world history, these volumes are loaded with archival quality photos, quotes from key players, and eyewitness accounts. details historical background information is provided so that students understand the context of each topic and its implications on future events as well. For example, in We Stand as One, Edge discusses not only the garment workers strike, but the women's suffrage movement’s influence upon it and vice versa. All volumes include extensive source notes, timelines, biographical entries, useful glossaries, selected bibliographies, and suggestions for further reading, both in print and online. High school students would benefit from using this series for research. Recommended." --Library Media Connection (Journal)"Like the other entries in the Civil Rights Struggles around the World series, this book chronicles events that will be ancient history to its readership but closes with a brief analysis of the enduring effects of the infamous Tiananmen Square conflict in 1989. After laying out a general look at China in the twentieth century, Kerns presents a detailed, dispassionate account of the events of 1989, known in China as the 'June 4th Protests,' to distinguish them from the many other demonstrations (peaceful and otherwise) that have occurred in Tiananmen Square. Well stocked with small color photos, side boxes (including one on the still-anonymous 'Tank Man'), and supportive back matter, this makes a serviceable assignment title on the topic." --Booklist (Journal)"These series entries address three struggles in the worldwide history of civil rights. Strong texts provide readers with essential background information on such topics as the ILGWU, apartheid, and Chinese government oppression; the activist movements' beginnings, confrontations, results, and significance within their nations' histories are then discussed. Many dynamic photographs illustrate the information-rich (if dense) volumes." --The Horn Book Guide (Journal)"These volumes are a treasure trove of information about the fight for civil rights across time and the globe. From the uprising of 20,000 American garment workers to Gandhi’s 241-mile Salt March, the suppressed demonstrate again and again their will to defeat their suppressors with dignity. The books are an effective combination of facts, fine photographs, and interesting quotes and excerpts from relevant documents. Perhaps most important in inspiring a young audience, the texts contain a poignant personal element that takes these historic milestones to an intimate, emotional level. The cruelty with which humans can treat one another is unflinchingly presented but the extraordinary grace exhibited in the face of it rises to the top." --School Library Journal, Series Made Simple (Journal)

Evidence of human settlement in China dates from 5,000 B.C. China, an ancient and much revered culture, "is one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world." The country was ruled by emperors whose primary base was centered in Beijing until the early part of the twentieth century when the Kuomintang (National Party, or KMT) put an end to the monarchy in 1912. In 1921 the Chinese Communist Party CCP formed declaring that "social and economic classes are abolished and all people are regarded as equals." These two political factions joined forces during WWII, but at its end they soon were at odds with one another again. In 1949, on the wake of political unrest, the CCP defeated the KMT, who fled to Taiwan. Mao Zedong established the People's Republic of China (PRC). The single party system of Communism had begun.Zhou Enlai was the first premier of the People's Republic of China. Mao, who would soon begin the first of many reform campaigns, "believed that Communism could defeat the foreign interference and internal corruption that had plagued China." Many of his initial reforms met with criticism or disaster and in the mid-1960s his Cultural Revolution had begun, a revolution that "had all but destroyed the Communist Party." In an effort to assert control over the Party and country, thousands perished as did many of China's valuable cultural artifacts. Within two years of Mao's death in 1976, Deng Xiaoping became the leader of the CCP, however "Most Chinese people remained committed to Socialism and Communism. But they wondered when Deng's reforms would start to show real, long-lasting effects."Change throughout the 1980s was slow and there was an "air of discontent" on campuses as "students began to object to Communist control tactics." They, like everyone else were concerned about their freedom and their future and "wanted more control of their own lives." Upon the death of Hu Yaobang, youth sympathizer and general secretary of the CCP, the students of Beijing mobilized to pay their respects and present a list of demands to the government. It was April, 1989 and student protests began in earnest. Mikail Gorbechev was coming to China on an official government visit. What would happen if he saw a dissident movement in Tiananmen Square? Would this further damage relations with the country? How would they stop the student uprising? Could they? This is an impressive overview of the infamous civil rights protests at Tiananmen Square. The condensation of political and cultural Chinese history was quite well done, a task that is quite daunting. The entire effect of this overview funnels directly into the protests at Tiananmen leaving the reader with a good idea of why this conflict erupted and an understanding of the stance both sides took on the matter. There has been much debate on the casualties resulting from the conflict, but this book treads lightly on the matter citing Chinese figures mentioned on 6/4. In the back matter, the source notes thoroughly document the material, a fact that students and teachers will appreciate if reports are to be undertaken. Numerous photographs and sidebar materials add a great deal to the text. For example, one two-page sidebar focuses on the life of Mao Zedong with a brief biographical sketch. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a timeline, biographical sketches of important Tiananmen student protesters, and additional recommended book and website resources.

Almost identical to the pad they use for the MCAT (2018).

This is a MUST HAVE for simulating test day. I do drill sets with it and many, many practice questions. The BIG NEGATIVE (hence three stars) is it only comes with one marker. If you use the scratch pad a lot, which you will because you are studying a lot, then the marker will run out fairly quickly. Go ahead and order another pen for yourself when you buy the scratch pad (amazon sells them-it is called a Staedtler non-permanent Lumocolor). Regular dry-erase pens are a real B to wipe off the scratch pad laminate. If you are in a pinch for a replacement like I was, use a pen made for overhead transparencies like a teacher uses. I found the Expo Vis-a-Vis brand worked well. MUCH easier to wipe off the laminate than a normal dry erase pen.

Is this booklet and ink pen similar to the real GMAT test plastic scratchpad and ink pen?The answer is a resounding YES. The size, number of pages, and the materials used for the booklet are identical. The ink pen is EXACTLY the same.Should you spend the money on this booklet and ink pen? After all, do you REALLY need a simulation scratchpad and ink pen for GMAT?In my opinion, yes. Unfortunately, the GMAT scratchpad and ink pen takes some getting used to. The scratchpad is plastic and the ink pen does not write as precisely on the scratchpad as it does on paper. Trust me, the last thing you need is learning to use the ink pen and the scratchpad during the actual GMAT. Do not assume practicing on paper is a perfect substitute.

This is a must for studying for the GMAT. Using this board is a lot different than using pen and paper. I was far better prepared for test day and more comfortable with the note board at the testing center. My only complaint is that the pen dried up before I finished my prep. The pen lasted through three practice CATs and some additional practice sessions. By the fourth CAT the pen was pretty useless and I had to resort to pen and paper instead. Otherwise, this is a great resource for GMAT prep and very similar to what you will use on test day.

Similar to MCAT Whiteboard but definitely not identical. The real one is not numbered and the background is white, not yellow. Still helpful if cannot find anything better.

Highly recommend for anyone preparing for the GMAT. IT IS NOT THE SAME AS SCRATCH PAPER. This booklet takes time getting used to, so it is best to get familiar with it from day one. It comes with plenty of reusable sheets in the booklet so only buy one.

First question: Is it similar to the one provided at GMAT? The answer is YES & no (though the difference wasn't much, I'll explain).During my GMAT I was given two scratch pads (you can ask for it when you are completely filled the one you are using). The first one was exactly same as this one but second was nearly similar to this one, the build material was same, only thing was that it had smaller little black squares, and I being so used to my original one, it took a little getting used to it, that said pen was exactly same as the one I got in the actual exam. But, was this worth the investment or did it anyway help me? Well if you have always did your "rough" work on a paper using a conventional pen/pencil then you surely would need some practice/getting used to this pad. Its more like writing on a projector slide than on a paper, and it also sticks to your hand while writing. So, getting some practice before the actual exam helps immensely. Again, it may not make dramatic difference in your score but if you are the one who wants to prepare the best and doesn't want any surprises then you should surely go ahead with it.PROS:1. Build quality is (pretty much) exactly similar to the one in the actual exam.2. Pen is exactly like the one you'll get in the exam.CON:1. You get only one pen and once you are done with it, you are done. I couldn't find a suitable replacement for it.

Good product, helpful in preparing for the test and knowing what to expect, but the pen started leaking all over after three or four uses. Not that the pen is the main product, but I don't have a ton of dry-erase markers laying around, so it wasn't very convenient. If you're looking to save a few dollars, just laminate 5 legal size pieces of grid paper and buy a fine tipped dry erase pen.

KJ Charles is an amazing author. I know this. Many people know this. It's a fact. I've just finished my 3rd time through The Magpie Lord series and also Jackdaw, which is one of my all time favorite stories. Read my review on that one!! However, after reading this one again, I find myself NOT caught up in the plot or story or much of anything. I find my mind wandering and I don't gravitate towards it like I did the other books. It's an adequate story with enough detail but it's strung together with M/M sex that goes on in WAY too much detail and for WAY too long!!! I know how gay sex works. Hell, I know how most sex works but if I wanted to read STROKE fiction, this wouldn't be it. WAY too much detail about WAY too many intimate details for me to enjoy. A hand goes here, a lip goes there and .... I know how it happens. I do. But I have to SKIM and SKIM and then I've missed a critical detail about something that was buried in PAGES and PAGES of sex ergonomics and then..... just stop, already. Apparently this is for a different crowd. I've read it twice and although the story is great and it's well written, it's NOT the type of story I want to read. Sometimes sex is best alluded to and not described in PAINSTAKING detail!! Read her other stories. The Magpie Lord series and Jackdaw are amazing novels. This one is of a different nature and for ME, that wasn't a great thing. Great writer, good story, not my scene. It's a 2.5 story that I upgraded to a 3 because of how well she writes. But she fails in content.

... or lull you into what would be a false sense of comfort.Danger, fear, and violence – the potential for and realization of – are inescapable results of suppression. Something always gives way. This is true on societal and personal levels. This novel is an examination of both. It’s an examination of the many different forms of expression and decisions made while living a reality filled with these things. While trying to survive. While struggling to do more than just survive. While wanting to love and live as the person one is meant to be, especially when it doesn’t conform to the accepted norms. Poverty, inequality, and repression influence many a decision, especially when it’s between life and death, literally and emotionally. This is early nineteenth century England at its tony best and abject worst.Shall we begin?Right from the get-go, I liked Julius. He’s hyper aware of everything, extremely intelligent, doesn’t hesitate to share his biting wit, and is loyal to his friends. Despite all of this, he’s living a life partially blocked, partially broken.~ * ~ Julius glanced down at his chest with some satisfaction. His waistcoat, in satin of a delicate pink hue shot with apricot streaks and embroidered with silver thread, was a masterpiece. It flattered his slim build, its dawn shades complemented his pale blond hair delightfully, and best of all, it caused almost physical distress to his friends. ~ * ~Harry is intelligent, quick to thought and action, especially when involving those he cares about, and is so very exhausted from years of barely surviving. He might be smack dab in the middle of the protests against increasing inequality in early nineteenth century England, but that doesn’t fill your table or your belly, or afford him the truths within his heart.Enter his cousin Richard.~ * ~ Actually, I hoped you would do it.”Julius blinked, startled. “I? Do what?”Teach Harry how to comport himself. How to dress. Help him find his place.”“Make your revolutionary into a gentleman? Bear-lead a radical cub? I?” ~ * ~Little did any of them know where everything in this endeavor would lead. There is a lot bubbling beneath Julius’s confident air. There’s even more below Harry’s widespread uncertainty. Neither should underestimate the other. The refreshing thing? Sometimes they don’t and the results are bright, entertaining, and meaningful. They both start to realize what’s really going on with each of them, in their individual lives and the one that maybe, possibly, they’re working towards together.~ * ~ He (Harry) was, in fact, enjoying himself. And, God rot it, so was Julius. ~ * ~This was probably the last moment when things remained simple, at least on the surface. For as much as Harry and Julius are the centerpieces of this story, all of the supporting characters are just as well described and fully realized. Silas and Richard hold the power positions, if you will. While Francis, Ash, Dominic (his is a powerful place, as well, for different reasons), cousin Verona, Gideon (that Gideon *shakes fist*), Cyprian, Ballard, and so many others make up the moving pieces that bring this world to robust life.Julius + Harry = complex, passionate, imperfect, humorous, and bone-deep needful connection.~ * ~ ”I’ve spent the evening in the best clubs in the land, and nobody’s thought twice about. You’ve turned me into a gentleman. And I’m drunk, and I feel like celebrating in a bloody ungentlemanly sort of way.” ~ * ~* Insert fake pout that morphs into a knowing leer here.Look, the crux of it is this: someone who was made to break free of the norm, who doesn’t fit the accepted positions within society, what do they do? What path do they choose? Can they draw a new one, digging that first step in the dirt towards an as yet unexplored way? Is it possible? And will those he’s come to count on and love be there with him, for him? Is it worth the price? It’s surreal, amazing, and feels like a perfect fit when someone comes along and, not only reminds you of who you are but, begins to show you what else you can be.~ * ~ But more, it was Harry. It was the sense that at last someone was at his shoulder again, on the inside. ~ * ~Humor, love, mistakes, family, friendships, suffering, great injustice, death, murder, politics, surprises, anger, forgiveness, mayhem, and fun. All at the hands of KJ Charles’ writing. Surriusly? As if there’s a choice here. Read it! And if you are on the fence or don’t normally read historicals, forget that and read it! The detail is delicious, important without being overdone, and all used to paint a fully realized vision of this world.Bonus: at the end, there’s a scene from book two, A Seditious Affair. I’m already grinning.

This was my first historical male/male romance. It’s full of sharp dialogue, fancy clothes, and powerful gentlemen, and I mostly enjoyed it. The author is new to me, and I’d definitely read her again.Harry’s father had noble blood, but he married a peasant woman and was disowned when he began inciting the poor of London to riots. Harry was raised in exile in France, hating the nobility. When his parents died, he returned to London, to the seditious rabble-rousing bookstore that he knew as a child. He’s then found by a family lawyer. It turns out that his uncle has died, and Evil Grandfather would rather reform Harry into a proper heir than let the estate pass to an unworthy relative.Evil Grandfather assigns the reformation task to Harry’s cousin Richard, who passes it on to Julius, who “was of medium height… and made of moonlight.” Julius is a dandy in the fashionable sense of the word. He cares for nothing other than his appearance and fine horses. I never knew the importance of buttons, or waistcoat fabric, until Julius lectured Harry about it.Julius’s instructions to Harry are delicious bits of wisdom: “‘You are permitted to speak. I may even, on occasion, require your opinion. You need not fear being wrong. I shall tell you if you are wrong.’” “‘You may be on whatever terms of intimacy with your valet that you choose. My man attends to my appearance with a pride only equaled by his lack of interest in my well-being.’” And, “‘If you speak of your past, in society, you will make the people around you uncomfortable, and they will make themselves comfortable again at your expense by means of mockery and contempt.’”There is a plot, and there are high stakes. Harry must pass as a proper gentleman, without arousing suspicion about his treasonous past. He must embrace the aristocracy, even when it opposes his moral compass. Evil Grandfather also expects him to marry quickly, to really ensure the bloodline. Meanwhile, Harry and Julius are getting it on. They discuss that it’s only until Harry gets engaged, because Harry has a duty to Evil Grandfather and he doesn’t want to cheat on his future wife, and Julius is made of ice and can’t be emotionally involved.Poor Harry is caught in the middle. He really hates Evil Grandfather, and he hates how the newspapers lie about riots, and he hates the aristocratic dismissal of the lives of others. But he puts up with it because he also really hates being poor and living on the streets. Without embracing the lie, he’ll be homeless at best, thrown in prison or hung at worst. The external plot takes up most of the book, which is probably great for some people. There was a lot of mystery and suspense. But I came for the romance. Julius is slow to warm up to Harry. He has reasons for being so cold (hint: The War), and it’s hard for him to admit that he could be worthy of love. I enjoyed his character so much that I wanted more joy and happiness for him. There is a happy ending, as happy as two gay men in the 1820s can have. It’s just almost overshadowed by other characters near the end.So. If you like a little more politics in your historicals, with an extra dash of forbidden love, you should give this a try.Rating: B+Originally posted at Red Hot Books: [...]

An extraordinary reading of the life and works of a very courageous and entrepreneur woman that fought all kind of adversities and adversaries to succeed creating an outstanding Order during a period when women were expected to stay at home. The devotion and character of Sta Teresa are very well portrayed and her teachings are presented in an easy way to read and understand. The historical setting of a rich Spain after the discovery of America is also very well developed.

A life dedicated to the service of Christ and the Church with great love. No one and nothing stood in her way as she was determined to institute the Carmelitas Descalzas convents where her followers lived a life of contemplation and sacrifice in lieu of all mankind, same as it is today. Her life was a complete joy, and even in tough times she was patient and persistant until she saw the work completed. Her holy life makes one meditate profoundly on the teachings here contained.

Who's on First? (Pop Classics), by Bud Abbott John Martz

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-Abbott and Costello's beloved comedy routine receives a picture-book treatment, complete with comical illustrations. A tall brown bear plays the coach (Abbott), a chubby white bunny plays the catcher (Costello), and they go back and forth about the oddly named members of their baseball team. "Who's on first. What's on second. I Don't Know's on third." Martz's expressive characters cavort on backgrounds that pop with appealing color. Clever page formatting conveys the pacing that is such an integral part of the laughs. At bottom, though, "Who's on First?" is about auditory humor, so the translation to a visual medium, while it may illuminate the jokes for kids, can't quite capture the magic of the original. Historical notes about the comedians and their routine appear at the end of the book.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MDα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

This famously hilarious Abbott and Costello routine will have adults laughing even before their kids get into the swing. When a new catcher, a white rabbit, is hired for the baseball team, he asks the coach, a brown bear, the names of the other players. So comes the classic response: “Who’s on first. What’s on second. I Don’t Know’s on third.” Confusion reigns as the banter between coach and catcher gets sillier and sillier with each new question and answer. The supercute cartoon illustrations, arranged in both panels and strips against solid backgrounds, only intensify the zaniness. The extended joke could just as easily have been accomplished in 32 pages instead of 40, but, nevertheless, this version easily bats a triple. The idea of turning a comedy sketch into a picture book is a fine one, and one wonders what imitators might be next. Grades K-3. --Cummins, Julie

This picture book is appealing for all ages and would make a perfect Father's Day gift. Even if Father's Day has passed when you read this, John Martz's illustrated Who's on First would make a nice complement to attending a summer baseball game, perhaps especially with Grandpa. My kids and I watched one of Abbott & Costello's original 1930s performances, then we read this book together. In fact, the visual aids ("Who" is a worm, "What" is a dog, "I Don't Know" is a chicken, etc.) will help kids "get" the hilariousness, even while Costello (here a white rabbit) continues to be perplexed. Of course this is a shortened version of the full skit. The endpapers are boring but at least consistent with the solid pastel backgrounds throughout the book. Also would have liked a colophon more substantial than "Printed in China."

I enjoy word play, and this routine has always made me laugh. My kids (ages 5, 7, and 9) all love having me read this out loud to them, and it brought me great joy when I heard them reciting it to each other in the car one day. It's also a great read-aloud book to young classes as it introduces kids to the importance of language and how one should never really get to comfortable with always using words in the same way.

Great Book!!! We bought this as a gift for a friend who has three young grandsons. He was so thankful for the gift and his grandsons read it over and over again. One grandson had a class assignment to read aloud a book in the classroom and he chose this book because he wanted the other kids to laugh. It worked!!! Quite a classic of it's time and it was nice to know that it was enjoyed so much by the younger children who never heard of Abbott & Costello.

This book is hilarious to my grandchildren, ages 7,9, and 11! They had never heard the original recording, so after finishing it, I played it for them. They totally cracked up. Great pictures, and after I read it to them, they looked through it for a long time, reading it again to each other. Perfect book

A fun children's version of the classic Abbot and Costello routine. An instant family favorite, I love to read it and my children think it is hilarious (especially my 3 year old). I love the illustrations, the animals are a fun twist on the routine. Our personal favorite is the owl who plays shortstop.

I bought a few copies of this book for nieces & nephews to read together at a family reunion. They had a good time playing the parts. It is condensed a little bit from the full sketch, leaving out the part with "When you pay the players, Who gets the money?" "Right, every dollar of it. Sometimes his wife picks it up" "Who's wife?" "Yes."There may be some other omissions I didn't catch, but if you want a book that little kids will like to read aloud, buy this. Better yet, buy a pair.

Very funny book and very well done. My kids don't like baseball and they still think this book is super funny. The illustrations are very engaging. Also, similar to the Elephant and Piggy books by Mo Willems, the book gets kids wanting to perform the parts, so it is good for early readers.

This is a fun book when you want to share the "Who's on First" story with a baseball fan!

Blind Spot, by Teju Cole

Review

“Common things [are] made radiant by the quality of [Teju] Cole’s looking. . . . In this new, luminous book, Cole shows himself to be really one of the best at seeing.”—The Guardian “This lyrical essay in photographs paired with texts explores the mysteries of the ordinary. Cole’s questioning, tentative habit of mind, suspending judgement while hoping for the brief miracle of insight, is a form of what used to be called humanism.”—The New York Times Books Review (Editors’ Choice)“Stunning . . . [Blind Spot] feels like the fulfillment of an intellectual project that has defined most of [Cole’s] career.”—Slate “Dazzling . . . cerebral yet intimate . . . combines personal essay, history, biography, journalism, and photography into a seamless package, capturing human dignity and grace through careful, clear-eyed reverence.”—Vice “An eclectically brilliant distillation of what photography can do, and why it remains an important art form . . . Cole has crafted a beautifully wrought and finely blended mixture of visual and narrative art.”—San Francisco Chronicle  “[In] luminous prose . . . Cole has succeeded in shredding experience into tiny fragments, all of which add up to much more than the sum of their parts.”—Los Angeles Times“The book, quite frankly, needs to be seen for itself. Like all great works, it defies paraphrase—it cannot be brought under the dominion of a single interpretation.”—The Forward“Blind Spot is assuredly the work of an auteur, a singular talent.”—The Sydney Morning Herald“An eye-opening exploration of the world, time, and how the two connect.”—Nylon“Reminiscent of Julio Cortázar’s Blow-Up . . . Cole expertly punctures placidity to expose concealed violence.”—The New York Review of Books“Cole enables us to see the world a little more clearly than before.”—The Scotsman “Cole transforms a simple travelogue format into something haunting and existential.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch   “A poetic reflection on the confines of vision and knowledge.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette“Blind Spot is many things at once: both memoir and map of the world, both essay on photography and elegy for the lost arts of looking and seeing . . . [with texts] as succinct and enigmatic as shards from an archaeological site.”—The Village Voice“Calmly incantatory and unsettlingly alert . . . the resonance of the more than 150 photographs Cole has taken and collected here is deepened for being met with such sustained and lyrical textual scrutiny, with the free forays of his capacious mind.”—The Millions   “I’ll . . . read anything by Teju Cole, whose sharp eye when writing about photography, I find, sharpens my eye for everything else, too.”—Louise Kennedy, WBUR

Teju Cole has become for me an indispensable writer because the intelligence of his work enables me to gain a more compassionate understanding of the world. But, of course, Cole is much more than a craftsman of words and a sage of ideas. He is also a renowned photographer. His greatest gift, however, may be his ability to synthesize artistic mediums in order to deliver an even more profound view of humanity. Indeed, he achieves a graceful merging of his poetic prose with his thoughtful photographs in Blind Spot. This is a unique book in that it is a travelogue with memorable observations, but also a stunning collection of images resonant with the voices from both the past and present in the places he visits. Each of the 150 photographs in this captivating book is complimented by a text entry. These nuggets of prose are a remarkable blend of anecdotes, musings, histories, metaphors, analogies, revelations, meditations, philosophies, and politics. They add depth, immediacy, and context to the brilliance of each photograph, but sometimes they seem to stand solitary in the empathy and compassion they express, the same way the power of the photographs can generate emotions beyond words. This alliance of literary flashes and contemplative images has a page-turning quality. Journeying through Cole's visual and written reflections is both exciting and humbling.Cole says of his travels, "I want to see the things the people who live there see, or at least what they would see after the performance of tourism has been stripped away" (274). Perhaps, then, the best way to make a worthy assessment of Cole and the originality of his work is to associate his goals to those of other great minds. Toni Morrison has said she attempts in her novels to "make the ordinary extraordinary." Seamus Heaney has said that art relies on "getting started, keeping going, and getting started again." And Hermann Hesse has said that the greatest art is music because it is essentially the obliteration of language, or rather the highest level of language. Cole's Blind Spot captures the extraordinary within the ordinary day, his work constantly starting anew and meticulously keeping going, striving to attain a musicality with its lushness of words and images.

This book of photographs paired with short essays is due out in the next two weeks. I want to give you ample time to order one for delivery on publication. Teju Cole’s art is exceptional at the same time it is accessible. In my experience, the confluence of these two things happens only rarely, which is how Cole has come to occupy an exalted place in my pantheon of artists. If I say his photography can stop us in our tracks, it says nothing of his writing, which always adds something to my understanding. Today I discovered his website has soundtracks which open doors. And there it is, his specialness: Cole’s observations enlarge our conversation. This may be the most excellent travel book I have read in recent years, the result of years of near-constant travel by the author. Scrolling through the Table of Contents is a tease, each destination intriguing, irresistible, stoking our curiosity. Each entry is accompanied by a photograph, or is it the other way around?“I want to make the kinds of pictures editors of the travel section will dislike or find unusable. I want to see the things the people who live there see, or at least what they would see after all the performance of tourism has been stripped away.”Yes, this is my favored way of travel, for “the shock of familiarity, the impossibility of exact repetition.” It is the reason most photographs of locales seemed unable to capture even a piece of my experience. But Cole manages it. In the entry for “Palm Beach,” his picture is of a construction site, a pile of substratum—in this case, sand—piled high before an elaborate pinkish villa. His written entry is one of his shortest, only three sentences, one of them the Latin phrase Et in Arcadia ego, washing the scene with knowledge of what we are viewing, and what is to come.Cole calls this work a lyric essay, a “singing line” connecting the places. There is some of that. What connects all these places for me are Cole’s eyes…and his teacherly quality of showing us what he is thinking. It is remarkable, and totally engrossing.“Human experience varies greatly in its externals, but on the emotional and psychological level, we have a great deal of similarity with one another.”Yes, this insight, so obvious written down, is something I have been struggling with for such a long time, going back and forth over the idea that we are the same, we are different. Cole tells us that this book stands alone, or can be seen as fourth in a quartet addressing his “concern with the limits of vision.” I want to sink into that thought, in the context of what he has given us, because outside the frame of a photograph, outside of our observation, outside of us, is everything else.My favorite among the essays, if we can call them such, filled as much with what Cole did not say as with what he did, is the piece called “Black River.” Cole evokes the open sea, Derek Walcott, crocodiles, and white egrets. A tropical coastal swamp filled with crocodiles also had white egrets decorating the bushy green of overhanging mangroves, the large white splashes almost equidistant from one another, the closest they can be for maximum happiness, I like to think, t hough it could also be minimum happiness, I guess. Any closer and there will be discord, like the rest of us live. The arrival in bookstores of a book by Teju Cole is an event. His pictures makes us look, and his words are like the egrets, spaced for maximum pleasure. Whether or not you read this as a series or alone, make sure you pick it up, just to gaze. You need have no agenda. His magic does not make much of itself. He takes us along for the ride. Bravo!
