The best study of the offshore economy phenomenon that I came across so far. Despite the fact that this book was published in 2003, it is still worth reading because the author grasped the subject remarkably. The language of this book is worth mentioning as well: it is elegant and articulate.

I bought this book to learn about the past and present history of offshore--both legal and illegal. Instead I got a book on an opinion of capitalism and the nation-state that sounds decidedly reactionary, full of obscure neologisms (i.e. "Fordism" to mean mass production along the lines of Henry Ford)--in short, a term paper from a Marxist sociology class. The author is clearly biased against offshore but tries to sound balanced. I would not mind if he actually discussed offshore (i.e. the historian Eric Hobsbawm is communist but writes decent history books), but he does not--the book is largely about capitalism from a leftist perspective. It doesn't mention off-shore except in passing and by innuendo, along the lines of 'surely much of the money sent offshore must be from illegal activities'. OK. if you say so. A sample exerpt: "So as capitalism 'recomposes' itself (reterritorializes) in front of our stunned eyes [WHY 'STUNNED'? THE AUTHOR DOES NOT EXPLAIN EXCEPT BY INFERENCE TO THE REST OF THE BOOK], by the most artificial means--i.e. through offshore and commercialized sovereignty and the numerical principle [IN A NUTSHELL THESE TWO PHRASES MEAN COUNTRIES SELLING CITIZENSHIP AND INVESTORS INVESTING BASED ON FINANCIAL FIGURES RATHER THAN PHYSICAL INSPECTION OF GOODS], we, the subjects, are in the position of both sovereign consumers/investors driving the new order [SHOULDN'T 'new order' BE CAPITALIZED?] and yet at the same time helpless observers, mere spectators of capitalism's grand journey." Whew! What depth. What rubbish.I could deconstruct this passage in plain english, but the point is: what does this (and the rest of the book) have to do with "The Offshore World"? Nothing.If you are interested in this kind of writing, and in the history of capitalism from a leftist perspective, there are far better books, such as anything by the famous French historian Fernand Braudel. I also recommend the author Ian O. Angell, who is outstanding, as a more right-leaning / free-market oriented author. If you are interested in theories of the state try Thomas Hobbes. But if you are interested in offshore avoid this author.The definitive book on offshore remains to be written.

In slightly under 200 pages, The Offshore World contains an illuminating summary of the global "offshore" system, which comprises offshore banks, export processing zones (EPZs), international banking facilities (IBFs), offshore financial systems (OFCs) or tax havens, flags of convenience, the Euromarket. Note that if you want to do business with one of these entities, you will do better to head for London, Tokyo, Liechtenstein or New York than anywhere outside territorial waters. "Offshore" is a virtual space defined by its exemption from taxes, regulations and other annoying features of the nation-state.Ronen Palan brings an outstanding depth of knowledge of his subject to this book. He traces the roots of the offshore system to the late 19th century, when the concept of sovereign states was developing in ways that often presented obstacles to international traders. The result today is a system of non-sovereign states that has grown in parallel to, and generally with the support of, nation-states. Most of that growth has occurred since the late 1960's, at the time of the profitability crisis and the collapse of the Bretton Woods system. Today an estimated $2 trillion per day passes through the offshore foreign exchange market and 20% of total private wealth is parked in tax havens. And those figures are growing.Aside from the breath-taking sums that flow through a system outside tax or regulatory control, what are the political implications of offshore? Palen's thesis is that nation-states have lost control of the monetary system: The offshore tail is wagging the sovereign-state dog. Wealthy individuals and multinational corporations can simply pick up their financial assets and take them offshore if nation-states don't lower taxes and regulatory requirements to their dictates. And without sufficient funds democratic states are in no position to provide either their populations or offshore facilities with the services and security they expect. The paradox is that offshore has been an inevitable outgrowth of the division of the world into sovereign states.Professor Palan sees the growth of offshore accelerating. Sooner, rather than later, its dark matter will dramatically impact our visible world in ways we cannot yet foresee. "Offshore can end only when either the state system has ended its long half-millennial journey or capitalism itself has been replaced by another system."

This book is primarily focused on why the offshore zones were created and what forces keep them alive and thriving. It gives you a very high level overview from a historical and political point of view.It doesn't explain the mechanics of the offshore, doesn't tell you how they function internally and doesn't tell you what they can be used for by the most of the readers.I'd name this book "History of the Offshore World", because it's really more a historical research and analysis.The book provides a lot of interesting facts but it's pretty hard to read. The style and structure don't highlight major topics and sometimes it starts looking like a braindump. The format is typical for a history book (a lot of text quotes, no graphs or formulas). But for the book of this size (small!) you probably finish it before you get bored.Also, if you are interested in how to offshore US jobs, how to start offshore project in India, how to save on your personal taxes etc - this book is pretty much useless, look for something else.Overall, if you are curious about the offshore and looking for some entry point to get started, this book will help you. But if you need some knowledge about offshore for business, this book probably won't give you any practical skills.

Nagara's father was an actor, playwright, and activist who often used his art as a means of peaceful protest against the oppressive government of Indonesia. Anticipating a clash with authorities after a final performance, his father escaped with the departing audience while Nagara and his mother hid out for the night in the planetarium, under the stars, so to speak. Nagara does provide some brief historical background of Indonesia: its colonization by the Dutch, its eventual independence, and the rise of a military-run government. The narrative is intimate and occasionally casual, which softens the impact of some of the scarier moments of the story but still engages readers and manages to explain colonization to young listeners. The pacing feels uneven at times, but overall this is a solid read. Collage and mixed-media illustrations are full of vibrant colors and lush detail. A brief epilogue gives further information about Nagara's father and his work. (As a strange hybrid of these two readers -- I lived in China but have no deep expertise in its history -- I often experience the worst of both worlds.)This book strikes a rare balance. It's a very absorbing read, and its multiple story-lines are impressively woven together, without any of the stitches showing. The people Osnos writes about run the gamut from a public figure like Lin Yifu (the World Bank economist who defected to mainland China from Taiwan in 1979) to an obscure figure like Michael Zhang, a young energetic optimist whom Osnos first meets at a Crazy English conference and then follows for a few years. Over 20 years ago, I traveled regularly to China to work mostly as a reporter/researcher on business. In the mid-90s, with the economy humming and giant new Chinese companies emerging, most citizens seemed to have struck a bargain: so long as their lives were improving, they were more or less content to look away from politics. The Tiananmen Square movement and its bloody aftermath went unmentioned or were hushed up; the authoritarian regime remained intact and heavy. Now, according to Evan Osnos in his brilliant look at early 21C China, that equation is changing.Osnos breaks the book into 3 sections. First, there is "chasing fortune", which is about the new ambitions and new rich. When I was there, people did not want to stand out as individuals much, but most of them seemed hopeful that things were improving, in a kind of Chinese version of the American dream. Now, tiny sections of society have become immensely rich, spawning all manner of corruption and inequality. This is very fun for the coverage of the aspirations of the young and the stories of some who made it big, including entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, nationalist bloggers, and writers.Second, there is the search for "truth". This is about those who are pushing against the system, challenging it overtly over the internet as well as by legal action. Osnos' coverage ranges from dissidents to investigative journalists and activists. To his credit, Osnos sought out a wide array of people, getting to know many of them personally and following their careers as the book progressed. Their trials and tribulations can be very difficult and painful, as in the efforts to break the performance artist and architect Ai Weiwei. But there is also a journalist who instinctually knows just how far she should push things, often getting warnings and even brief periods of detention. I was astonished to learn that 1 in 100 people in China is engaged in some form of state-sponsored information control, either as censorship or surveillance or covert counter-agitprop. Though the regime is holding on, no one seems to believe in its ideology anymore; many even doubt its competence. (I.e. the popular view in the circles I wrote in - that an authoritarian regime is superior because it can make decisions quickly and with few people involved - appears to stupidly over-estimate its accomplishments.)Finally, there is the section on "faith", exploring the meaning in their lives, be it religious, ideological, or political. This follows the evolution of characters we've gotten to know. What struck me was the feeling that growth and opportunity were stalling, that the combination of official opaqueness and frustrated ambitions were swelling into what could become an immense challenge to the party if it seeks to maintain its monopoly on power. In other words, the old bargain is in dire need of renewal, perhaps in the form of new freedoms and even the emergence of new parties, particularly if economic growth is slowing. This was the thing that had most changed since I explored corporate boardrooms, met with talented workers, and taught writing at Beida. It is a potential sea change that no one should under-estimate.Osnos' book is one of the best recent ones I have read on China. It is mostly about the period he was there, 2005-2013, which saw the rise of the internet and social networking (his portrayal of their impact under the heavy hand of the sate is nuanced and surprising). As such, it is a snapshot and should be read now, as it will no doubt be over-taken by events in the near future. Beyond his first rate reporting, Osnos is a beautiful writer. It was a great update for me, an old hand China watcher. Recommended with enthusiasm.

This book taught me that there are so many irritants and ailments that can be simply dealt with naturally by using essential oils as well as the most effective ways to use them. From ants to zits. This is an encyclopedia of practical tips every home needs!

This is excellent material about essential oils! I really enjoyed reading it and found it to be very enlightening! There are so many tips on how to use different essential oils! It contains fascinating information like recipes for different ailments, descriptions about different types of headaches, a dosage requirement chart and a dilution chart. There is also a section providing detailed insight about 13 different essential oils. I surely learned some new things by reading this book! For example, I had never heard of Baobab oil! There are also oils that you can use for oil pulling! A person who is interested in using oils but doesn’t know how should definitely read this book! But an experienced oil user can also get some information on additional blends. You will definitely get quick pointers on how to make a blend for this or that!

I found this book very helpful in breaking down which specific essential oils go with what's ailing you. It's fascinating to me to be able to treat so many things naturally with essential oils. I have learned so many interesting things from each of Kathy's books. I can't say enough good things about the work she does to help others.

This book is so helpful! Not only does it provide information on the many uses of essential oils but gives you vital safety information as well. The cautions tell me this author knows about oils and cares about her readers as not every oil is right for every person (kids, elderly, pets). This book will be my go-to from here on out!!

After seeing some aromatherapy tips on Pinterest I wanted to learn more about specific essential oils, their uses, and the best/safest way to use the oils. This book covered all the bases a beginner could want. I like how the author covers the uses of a smaller set of basic essential oils in one chapter but later cross-references by listing use and all the oils that would fall under that use. I can either look up the name of the particular oil I have and see what I can use it for, or I can look up headache, for example, and see if I have any of the listed oils in stock. In addition to the information in the book, the author references podcasts she's done on certain topics to help explain better to those who are auditory learners.I'm already excited to try out one of her suggestions for peppermint oil after being bitten by a mosquito earlier.

The book was in great condition and just what we were looking for. The CD was still in the back of book also and was unopened. Thank you for selling the City of Tacoma a book in great condition.

Was hoping for some good information since I haven't been involved in an upgrade recently. Unfortunately, for me and my wallet, this book was no help. It is out of date as the upgrade process has since changed. My own fault, however, I did not read the description closely.

I recommend this book to anyone that plans to implement SAP.Very clear writing and excellent for managers as well.I do not like the cover but this is something else.Rita Olson

I love Jon Duckett's HTML and CSS book, it has been an invaluable resource in my career. I first started learning web development using it. I was eagerly awaiting this book for over a year. I couldn't wait to learn JavaScript any longer, so I picked up JavaScript: The Definitive Guide and learned a lot online thanks to Codecademy, CodeAvengers, and lots of other great online resources. So, I have a pretty good grasp of JavaScript and use it every day in my job. I still picked up this book when it was released because Duckett's previous book was so important to me and it never hurts to get different perspectives and reinforce my skills and knowledge.I'm about halfway through this book so far and I love it, I'm learning some new things and understanding some concepts from a different angle than I previously did. So, it's already worth the price. However, this book could have used another pass through by a technical editor. It seems like they switched up how they wrote variables and functions halfway through and forgot to fix all the examples in the book. I'm just finishing the events chapter right now and the final example has grievous errors that prevent the page from working as intended. See below:function writeLabel(e) { if (!e) { e = window.event; } target = event.target || event.srcElement; textEntered = e.target.value; noteName.textContent = textEntered;}Rather, it should be:function writeLabel(e) { if (!e) { e = window.event; } target = e.target || e.srcElement; textEntered = target.value; noteName.textContent = textEntered;}Go to the accompanying website and try it for yourself: the "Audio Note" text doesn't update. I ignored the first few errors like this but when I got to this point in the book I just had to let others on Amazon know of the problems (my first Amazon review!). I like Duckett and want this book to succeed, but it needs another pass by a technical editor before complete novices can get full utility out of it.Luckily, I have a good understanding of JavaScript so I can see where the errors are and correct them (maybe it's all a test!?). However, this book is intended for people who have never learned any JavaScript before and thus they will not realize the errors in the code. I'm sure the second printing or edition will fix some of these errors. If you're new to JavaScript, I want to recommend this but there are some gaping errors, so you should be careful and back up your learning with other resources.

I originally gave this book 1 star because of the outrageous number of errors. I spent an hour going through the website's Errata trying to make all the corrections. However, even many of the corrections are murky, directing you to download updated code examples that don't exist. The author seems to have left this book for dead, even providing a dead email address on the website. The last straw was when my copy started falling apart...Update: I was so disappointed with the quality of this book that I called the publisher (Wiley) to complain. They confirmed my issues and said that they were issuing free replacements of the book. In my case, having purchased from Amazon, they said I would have to go through the Seller, which I did. The seller ended up issuing me a full refund.I re-purchased the latest printing of the book at Barnes & Noble and can report that all the errors have been corrected and the binding issue seems to have been resolved. So...My warning to you is to avoid purchasing this book from Amazon, because you will not be able know if you have an older version with the above issues or a newer version without the issues.That being said, I now give this book 4 stars. It is very thorough in explaining JavaScript in detail. My only two complaints are:(1) the lack of any exercises to re-enforce the material; you read something then move on to the next subject. A lot of the material didn't "stick" without a way to re-enforce the concepts.(2) I felt the book lacked real-world insights about JavaScript. For example, the newer .querySelector() is far superior and more flexible than .getElementById() or .getElementsByClassName(), but all were described matter-of-factly, without any descrimination. It was left up to you to figure out when or why, all things being equal, to use one over the other.Finally, if you already have a good grasp of JavaScript, this book is a very good reference.

First off, Its a beautiful looking book. It is like art made with diagrams and code. I learned some concepts and was able to see why some techniques might be better than othersOne of my main issues with this book is that it feels like its written for experienced JS developers. There are many examples of the book telling the reader to look to a future page to learn more about something being shown on a much earlier page.It feels very disorganized. Along with the above issue, it gives you lists of methods or properties, only to go through them in more detail later. This sounds like a good thing, but I often felt unsure if I should put in effort to understand something on a page before moving on, or simply move foward hoping it was explained in detail later.Last issue is a big one for anyone interested in JS. This book is outdated. ES6 is here and has introduced new syntax, among other things, as well as CLASSES. This book needs a major update.

Well documented but I found it a little dry. In similar books the soldiers' banter is what provides the emotive humour, and these fit young lads, highly trained, most of them, must have had quite the banter at the time. But I suppose it was written long after the event, mostly relying on documents, letters and memory. Having said that, many folks are comparing these lads with Lawrence, and Lawrence's book was equally, if not more dry, and certainly not such an easy read as this. It's a quick read and certainly worth the effort. All such books are worth the effort for their historical value and getting a handle on the men who did this work back in the '60s. The stories of carrying weapons, explosives and ammunition within regular airline baggage is just priceless (Wish that we had it that easy!), showing just how casual everything used to be before the tech-age and modern terrorism. What does come through well, as in all Arab-leaning exploits, is the notion that no one really knew who they could trust apart from their immediate bodyguard. No one knew if the mission would continue or fold at any moment, and what their future might hold if it folded before they were ready. Last, any book which involves the Israelis ferrying weapons to bolster an Arab country (without its knowledge, of course) in its fight against another Arab country is well worth reading. Those are the things of legend that no one ever believes. It's also a necessary read to learn how we got to where we are now. Everything has consequences.

There is a lot that can be learned from this book that pertains to the goings on of today. Small groups of special operators can go into an environment and join a rebel group and make it more efficient and lethal.A much better option than to invade a country and then try to deal with the societal and cultural issues. Imagine if small teams of private military contractors went into Syria at the very beginning and gave the people the tools to free themselves and head of the scourge of ISIS?And the big take away is whether you are Egypt in the case of this book or America today in Afghanistan, never go into these types of terrain and expect to win. The terrain will always favor the defender.This book made me think of Lawrence of Arabia and his great adventures. These men did a fine job and followed in that tradition.

In light of the American withdrawal from the Middle East and now Yemen, this book isa timely reminder of the unsettled nature of the region. This story is UK and Frenchmercenaries [without official government visible support] aided the tribes and shieks and Prince of Yemen in thwating Nassars attempted controlof Yemen on the way to enlarging his influence in the Middle East. Nassar, a client of the Soviet Union, wanted to oust the West and then control the flow of oil to Europe and the U.S.Operating on a shoe-string and with periodic Egyptian gold, the mercenaries held on for almost a decade. The military leadership kept the tribes in line and also to protect thetribal interests.The story line is engrossing and the account well researched and written. End notes oftenilluminate a passage. Truly an amazing story and one worth a reader's time.

This is a real and interesting account of how the world powers acted in the cold war area - war by proxy and plausible deniability!

What happened in Yemen about 50 years ago mirrors what is happening in the middle east TODAY. For ALL THOSE WHO CARE AND THOSE HAVING ANY MEASURE OF CONTROL this book is essential reading.
