It's a great book. Funny and adventurous. Basically it's composed of 2 longer stories about trips the author took around the wild jungles and coasts of Nicaragua with friends plus a number of shorter stories about interesting people and incidents he came across. Amusing style and interesting content. Well worth a few dollars. Better than I expected from the cover
I thought this book was very descriptive of the terrain and the natives. I enjoyed reading it. I do think there is more of a danger traveling alone as an American but he seemed to make out fine.
I was a bit disappointed with Sons of Pirates. It was interesting, but not as funny nor entertaining nor informative as I had hoped. The stories are told by a worker at an NGO in Nicaragua who goes on adventures during his time abroad. The problem is I never really felt connected or interesting in the tales he was telling. He doesn’t give you enough information or background (there is no info on the indigenous people) to make them engaging and other than the one story about love gone wrong I never felt as if they were funny or engaging. His writing is OK but sometimes he goes on to write as if he was talking one example is when he talks about a “Coupla young fellas†which is fine if that’s how someone talks but that’s the author talking not a character in the book. I found my self skipping a bit in the middle to get to the end and finish it.
Short stories from the time the writer served as a volunteer in a third world country sounds depressing right? Wrong, not the case for this book. The writer is humorous, realistic, making you feel as if you're there with him (and there are also photos which serve to not only drive the point home about where he is but helps you visualize and get a feel for the energy of what life was like there) and the stories are all woven with the author's good natured humor and various sweet little moments that come up in everyone's life. Great read, definitely a thumbs up!
A witty combination of travel book and life experience. Casey takes us with him to a little-known area of Central America. As we see the land and meet the people, his caring becomes obvious. Now I want to go there myself with Casey as my guide! I definitely recommend this book!
Entertaining read!
Like a journal account. Interesting in some spots, dull in others. I was disappointed.
