If you have a fundamental understanding of how networks operate, and want an overview of various IT security concepts, this book may be for you. Unfortunately, much of it is out of date. For example, the operating systems ,along with their attendant problems, the book addresses are primarily Windows XP and Windows NT...yes, NT. So when the author spends a chapter talking about plugging the specific security holes in those particular operating systems, its almost wasted time.With that said, they go beyond OS's and in depth about other hardware and software involved in IT sec, most of which is still relevant. They cover firewalls, routers, virus and endpoint protection, and more.With what I've learned from this book, I'm ready to go deeper into the subject, which is all I was expecting from this book anyway. So in that regard, it was exactly what I was looking for - I just wish they could have updated the edition from 2002. From the listing it looked like it had been updated in 2011, but apparently the update didn't cover enough material.
Pretty good. I expected a bit more on security operation centers, but then, that wasn't the focus of the book. This was one of the better "Dummies" books I have purchased recently. I really do recommend it.

Great buy, worth the money
While I was able to learn a basic vocabulary, this book was written when XP was new. The security tips such as consider whether you really need a website are antiquated.
