Very good book for those researching the history of the organization. Puts into clear focus the development of key organizational teachings.

This is an excellent reference work which provides great detail as to the technical theological nuances of many changes that have occured over the years from Russell to Rutherford to Knorr. Summed up the author's assessment of Russell is mostly good, Rutherford mostly bad, and Knorr is both good and bad. He has endeavored to be objective however he appears partial to most of Russell's views as if they were empirically correct. Curiously he doesn't discuss Russell's extensive use of Pyramidology to support his chronology, and Rutherford's rejection of it. Likewise it seems evident he views the lack of organization under Russell is superior from both a biblical and practical standpoint as compared to a structured organization with central control which Rutherford and Knorr implemented. I think this point is debatable as anyone who has been involved with the practical matters of managing any business or church would know. He also seems partial to P.S.L. Johnson theologically as compared to any of the organizational decendants of Russell including Jehovah's Wintesses. Net net anyone who is not familiar with the history of Jehovah's Witnesses will find the information quite eye opening. Nevertheless I think whether one studies the history of the nation of Isreal as recorded in the bible or the first century christian congregation one will see clearly the imperfections of men. It would be interesting if the author would update his work at some point as this material is 40 years old.

Any authoritative book on the JW's over the last 40 years quotes "A People for his Name" as a reference source, (using Wills pseudonym Timothy White). Tony gives valuable insights into the formation of the religion, the character, influence and actions of its top leaders and an evaluation of its doctrine. For the current JW who wants to understand his history, the ex-JW or sociologist who seeks to understand the evolution of the movement this is a great place to start. (No other book gives such detail on the formative Rutherford years for my money.)The addition of an appendix makes a great book indispensable. And Tony, if you are out there, I would love to hear your personal story.Crisis of ConscienceIn Search of Christian FreedomMillions Now Living Will Never Die!The Gentile Times ReconsideredUnderstanding Jehovah's Witnesses: Why They Read the Bible the Way They DoReasoning from the Scriptures with the Jehovah's Witnesses

Sorry, but I didn't know this was written by an apostate, threw it away. There are plenty of lies on the internet about Jehovah's Witnesses...they will have to answer to the One above for the concerted effort to defame the witnesses. I know the truth and don't need this author's "evaluation."

The book is an excellent compendium detailing how the Jehovah's Witness organization developed its idiosyncratic teachings from its beginnings in the early 1870s through to the 1960s. The author shows meticulous attention to detail, right down to specifying exact sources (Watchtower publication, date and page numbers). His commentary is even-handed and sensible, although as noted in an earlier review, sometimes assertions are made without specifying their source. There are, however, aspects of the book's presentation and publication that, in my opinion, detract from its otherwise well-presented content:AUTHOR'S NAME & PROFESSION:The very brief Notes on page ii state that "[t]he first edition of "A People for His Name" was published using the pen name "Timothy White". Unexplained is why the author is now using the name Tony Willis. In the information on the last page of the 2006 edition, it states that the author was "[r]aised in the movement, he entered the ministry in 1957..." It then mentions his "many years' experience...as a minister". Given that witnesses in leadership positions also refer to themselves as ministers, is the author speaking about when he was a witness minister or about the time after he left? And when did he leave? The wording could be read as meaning he became a minister (in another religion) after he left the Witnesses. I find it disappointing that information about the author is vague.SECOND EDITION:The front cover states in large, striking font that this is the "Second Edition", but strictly speaking, since the book's content has not been updated, it is a reprint, not a second edition. I later learnt from an internet discussion documented on the Jehovah's Witness forum that some quotations in the 1967 edition evidently were not included in the 2006 edition, but I do not know precisely what those quotations were or why they were not included in the 2006 edition. Even so, in my view, neither the larger page format, nor the deletion of some quotations nor the addition of an index warrant its being designated a second edition.INFORMATION ON THE BACK COVER (THE "BLURB"):It seems a shame that, despite the front cover clearly calling attention to book's being "the second edition", the information on the back cover appears to be a (dated) reprint of what presumably was on the back cover of the 1967 edition. Among other points, the opening lines of the blurb state: "Jehovah's Witnesses has been regarded as the fastest growing religion: it may also be called the most active." This is an extremely outdated statement, in Western countries in particular, where the number of active witnesses has stagnated and in some instances - Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and most Scandanavian countries, has declined.Even given the foregoing criticisms, the book is a valuable edition to my library. It is a fascinating - if disturbing - historical reminder that as the generations kept passing, this even-then ageing and far-from "rational" religion was forced to update its exclusive take on Biblical "words of truth". Indeed, if the documented flip-flop changes were evident in the decades leading up to the 1960s, the flip-flopping has become even more evident in more recent years, as documented in other more up-to-date publications.
