The book is supposedly written for those who have an understanding of PowerShell. I did read a handful of chapters in an introduction prior to jumping into this, but this is very well presented and made setting, securing up and managing my instance of S3 and EC2 servers a breeze. You will save yourself hours of searching (even if you're good at it) and it will cover things that the hunt and peck searches simply don't touch on. Over the course of a weekend I was able to set-up and implement everything I needed. Highly recommend.

I found Brian's work to be extremely helpful as both an introduction to Amazon Web Services and specifically using Windows PowerShell to elastically control the AWS cloud environment. By working each of the examples given in the book over the course of a month, along with taking the CBT Nuggets courses on AWS, I was able to pass the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate Level exam.

The book is exactly what I wanted. Direct to the point, several good examples for real use cases and the instructions are well written.I recommend this book to any Windows guys (like me) that are going to work with AWS. The time you will save makes it worth every penny.

The book is very well written, very detailed and yet very "easy reading". Having been using the UNIX system for six years, I'm still referencing from this absolute beginner book from time to time because the language is so non-technical, yet the information contained within is more than enough to get you started on using UNIX operating system and learn to love it.The author did a very good job particularly in describing and tutoring the reader how to do common tasks such as using email systems, doing text editing, issuing commands from the CLI, etc. Not very in-depth but the point is, it is enough to get you interested to look for MORE, which is the most important thing. There is no point in explaining something in-depth only to discourage the reader to look for more information, and only to leave the subject untouched because it looks "hard". If you are a UNIX veteran/advanced user/system administrator, this book is not for you, as you have probably known way more than what this book contains.I highly recommend this book as the very first book on UNIX to read on, if you have never even heard of UNIX before, and only experienced in Windows/MacOS environments.

For a Windows 95 user like myself, Unix looked liked a dark and mysterious night, unpenetrable and unfathomable. This book came like a guiding light and saw me through.

I bought this book almost two years ago for having a good material more than a CCNP level; I love reading and having the books, but I suggest to update it as soon as possible like they did for Volume 1.Right now I'm preparing for CCIE R&S and I realized the book includes a lot of obsolete information like: EGP, Multicast Protocols like CGMP, MOSPF, DVMRP, CBT, etc.Anyway it's a good resource and it deserves 5 stars.

I am kind of amazed to see how introducing a new portion called "Cisco Core Knowledge" to the CCIE lab test can persuade people to return to old days where this book was known as one of the ultimate CCIE R&S resources! anyway even today (Q2 2009) it comes handy for the Lab and CK preparation. If I have to pick the golden chapter obviously I'd go for the BGP chapter where the topic is explored very nicely. However, it doesn't mean it's got all CCIE-required BGP tips in it but can easily cover up to 70% of what you need to learn for the EGP section of the test.The NAT section is OK with several important (and well explained) examples (usually with nice diagrams). To be honest I read through the Multicast section once but didn't find it very easy to understand and eventually had to use other Cisco press books.Finally, again my big plus for these two books (vol 1&2) undoubtedly is given to the examples presented in various chapters. Extremely useful.

I personally feel this book is even better than Volume I. Several hundred pages are spent on BGP and Multicasting, going through details that aren't necessarily found in the more well-known books on those topics. An excellent companion to Halabi and Williamson.The book was a major help to me in achieving my CCIE R&S. I just with Jeff would write a Security book!Chris BryantCCIE #12933

They say sequels are never better than the original. This may be somewhat true for this book. This is a VERY GOOD book. It's just that it's not as good as the first volume. Still head and shoulders above the rest. BGP examples are clear and concise. It doesn't go into detail like Halabi's book however.If Doyle never wrote Vol I, this book (Vol II) would definitely get a 5 star rating from me.

Best one out there for CCIE training. Do recommend for all the networking guys.

I bought this book used but it doesn't look like the last person ever opened it which is good for me. I work in a multicast environment and this book helps me dive deeper into that technology a great book overall.

Plutarch (c. 45–120 A.D.), the Greek philosopher, lived at the height of the Roman Empire and is author of one of the largest and most important collections of writings to have survived from Classical antiquity. "The Rise of Rome" is actually a revised compendium of Plutarch's Parallel Lives: Complete, in which he analyzed and brought forth commentary about Greek and Roman rulers of Antiquity, focusing on their similarities and how they helped create the world of Antiquity. This nice compendium just focuses on the Roman statesmen who founded the city (supposedly) and led her to greatness, eventually overtaking the Greeks as the proto-Western civilization that would dominant the late ancient world.The book itself is only 583 pages of text from Plutarch's larger work, with some commentary by the authors introducing the reader to the individual that Plutarch is writing about, so that provides additional historical commentary that is valuable. At the end, it also contains a few nice maps and a large bibliography and index."The Rise of Rome," is not one of Plutarch's actual works, as mentioned, this is just a revised version of his Lives solely looking at the Romans but for Roman historians or lay persons, this is a nice selection as one can look just at the Roman figures. Plutarch's "The Fall of the Roman Republic" is his singular work covering Roman history during his lifetime. It is a worthwhile book and a nice revision. On a side note about Plutarch himself, his account of the Lives is generally regarded as a classic work of ancient history, but is filled with embellishments (as was common among Antiquity historians), so that is just a forewarning. The work starts with the mythical founder of Rome (contra to Virgil's The Aeneid) with Romulus and ends with Aemilius Paullus of the notable Paullus Family. The content on the Elder Cato is also very worthwhile.

If you have a fundamental understanding of how networks operate, and want an overview of various IT security concepts, this book may be for you. Unfortunately, much of it is out of date. For example, the operating systems ,along with their attendant problems, the book addresses are primarily Windows XP and Windows NT...yes, NT. So when the author spends a chapter talking about plugging the specific security holes in those particular operating systems, its almost wasted time.With that said, they go beyond OS's and in depth about other hardware and software involved in IT sec, most of which is still relevant. They cover firewalls, routers, virus and endpoint protection, and more.With what I've learned from this book, I'm ready to go deeper into the subject, which is all I was expecting from this book anyway. So in that regard, it was exactly what I was looking for - I just wish they could have updated the edition from 2002. From the listing it looked like it had been updated in 2011, but apparently the update didn't cover enough material.

Pretty good. I expected a bit more on security operation centers, but then, that wasn't the focus of the book. This was one of the better "Dummies" books I have purchased recently. I really do recommend it.
